A window sensor fault tends to announce itself in one of three ways: the alarm will not set because the panel insists a window is open, the alarm does not react when the window is opened, or the panel shows a zone fault or tamper error out of nowhere. All three mean the same practical thing — you cannot currently rely on that window being protected — and all three have a shortlist of usual causes. Because windows are opened less often than doors, faults sometimes go unnoticed for weeks, which is why many people only discover them during a genuine attempt to set the alarm or an insurance-required test. Diagnosing properly is the priority; guessing at it usually costs more in the end.

What goes wrong with window contacts

Window contacts suffer a handful of routine failures. The magnet and sensor can drift out of alignment — windows warp, sashes settle, and a sensor knocked by cleaning or decorating can end up a fraction too far from its magnet for the panel to read a closed window. Condensation and cleaning products corrode contacts and mounts over time. On wireless sensors the battery is a prime suspect, and a dying battery often causes exactly the intermittent behaviour that is most confusing. On wired systems, the cable run through the frame or reveal can be damaged by painting, drilling or simply age. Tamper switches are a frequent source of the panel fault that blocks setting. And after double glazing is replaced or windows are re-fitted, contacts are sometimes re-installed in the wrong position or lost entirely, leaving a zone permanently open.

How we diagnose it

We test the zone live: open and close the window while watching the panel, which tells us immediately whether the contact reads closed, reads open, or behaves intermittently. We check the magnet and sensor alignment and the gap between them, look at the mounting for looseness or corrosion, test the battery on wireless units and the wiring on wired ones, and check the tamper circuit if the panel reports one. Where the window has been recently replaced or re-glazed, we check whether the contact type suits the new window at all. You finish the visit knowing the actual cause, in plain words, with the repair options and costs in front of you.

Fixes and replacements

Alignment faults are corrected by re-mounting the sensor or magnet in the right relationship, using fixings appropriate to uPVC, timber or aluminium — the frame material matters more than people expect. Batteries are replaced, contacts cleaned, and damaged cables or failed switches usually mean a replacement contact, quoted separately before you approve anything. If the window itself is the problem — badly warped, or a frame that no longer closes true — we will say so, because no sensor can compensate indefinitely for a moving window, and we would rather point that out than sell you a fix that fails next winter.

Safety and scope

We work on the sensor and its wiring, not on glazing or sealed units. If a job would involve disturbing the window's structure or glass, we will tell you plainly and discuss the sensible way forward. And if a sensor is wired into a system with mains-backed panels, we isolate properly rather than work live.

Booking a window sensor visit

Phone or use the website, and tell us which window, what the panel shows, and whether the window has been replaced, painted or repaired recently. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Windows are the openings people worry about most, so a sensor that has stopped doing its job there deserves a proper diagnosis rather than a shrug. Window contact faults are usually caused by something physical and findable. We identify the actual cause, explain your options, and only carry out work you have approved.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about window sensor fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fix a window sensor myself?

Checking that the magnet is still present and replacing a battery in a wireless contact are reasonable DIY jobs if the manual describes them. Anything involving opening the sensor, re-fixing it or touching wiring is better diagnosed properly — window contacts often generate tamper faults when disturbed, and the fault can end up worse than before.

What do you check during a window sensor diagnosis?

We open and close the window against the panel to see what it actually reports, check magnet and sensor alignment and the gap, inspect mounts and contacts for corrosion, test the battery or wiring, and verify the tamper circuit. Then we explain the cause and quote before starting.

Is there any risk in a window sensor fault?

The main risk is practical: a window that your alarm is not monitoring. Some people respond by taping the sensor in place or taping up the contact — we would advise against improvised fixes, which hide faults rather than cure them. Nothing in a standard contact sensor poses an electrical danger to you.

Why does my alarm only sometimes object to a window?

Intermittent complaints about one window usually mean the gap between magnet and sensor is right on the edge of the sensor's tolerance, or the battery is dying on a wireless contact. Both get worse gradually. We identify which by testing the zone live and measuring the alignment.

What will the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis, the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts — a replacement contact, magnet or battery — are quoted separately.
