Carbon monoxide has no smell, no taste and no colour, which is precisely why the alarm that detects it is not a device you can ignore when it misbehaves. A CO alarm that chirps, shows a fault indication, fails its test button or is past its designed lifespan is telling you something you should not guess at. This page explains why these alarms fail, what we do on a diagnosis visit, and what you should do in the meantime — starting with the most important rule: if your CO alarm is sounding continuously right now, get everyone, including pets, out into fresh air immediately, and seek medical advice if anyone feels unwell. Do not stay inside to investigate. The alarm's fault can be diagnosed afterwards; your safety comes first.
Why carbon monoxide alarms fail
CO alarms are consumable devices in a way most sensors are not: their electrochemical sensing cell has a designed lifespan, often five to ten years and printed on the unit, after which the manufacturer can no longer vouch for its sensitivity. That makes age the most common and most dangerous cause of a failed alarm — a unit past its date can chirp merrily and pass a test button while no longer capable of proper detection. Beyond age, the usual faults apply: a low or dead battery, which typically produces regular chirping rather than a full alarm; contamination, dirt and moisture affecting the sensing cell, especially in kitchens and utility rooms; poor placement, which both shortens sensor life and reduces how well the alarm protects; and genuine internal failure of the sensing cell or electronics, which on domestic units is not repairable and means replacement. Some chirping patterns are deliberate warnings — end-of-life signals differ from low-battery chirps, and the manual's pattern table tells them apart.
How we diagnose it
We start with the unit itself: make, model, and the date stamp compared against its printed lifespan. If it is past its date, we will tell you plainly that replacement is the only responsible answer, whatever the test button says. We then check the battery and power supply, look at the chirp or fault pattern against the manufacturer's meaning, inspect for contamination and moisture, and assess placement against the manufacturer's guidance — CO alarms belong where they can protect people, typically near sleeping areas and rooms containing fuel-burning appliances, and height and distance rules matter. Where the manual provides a test method, we use it, and we will be honest that a test button proves the sounder and electronics, not the sensing cell's sensitivity.
Repairs and replacements
Battery replacement is routine, and on many units it is the entire fix. Replacement alarms are quoted separately and matched correctly to their position, fitted per the manufacturer's guidance. What we will not do is sell a repair to a unit whose sensing cell is past its life, muffle an end-of-life chirp to keep the peace, or leave you with an unverified alarm. No CO alarm can be promised to detect every concentration in every condition, which is why placement, age and prompt attention to faults matter more than marketing claims.
The companion rule
A CO alarm is a backstop, not a maintenance plan: fuel-burning appliances in your home — boilers, fires, cookers and flues — should be serviced regularly by the appropriately qualified engineers for their type. A working alarm and well-maintained appliances work together. If anyone in the household ever feels unwell in a way that improves outdoors, seek medical advice and mention the possibility of CO exposure.
Booking a CO alarm diagnosis
Call or use the website and tell us the alarm's make and age if you can see the date stamp, what the chirp or fault pattern looks like, and where the alarm is mounted. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any replacement alarm quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A carbon monoxide alarm is the one sensor in your home you can never see working with your own eyes, so a fault indication or a failed test deserves real attention. If your alarm is sounding right now, get everyone outside into fresh air first and follow the emergency guidance. Once you are safe, we diagnose the alarm properly.

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about carbon monoxide sensor issue
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I replace a carbon monoxide alarm battery myself?
Yes — where the manual describes it, fitting the correct battery is sensible DIY, followed by the test button. But first check the manual's chirp pattern table: a repeating end-of-life signal cannot be stopped with a new battery. If the alarm is faulting with a fresh battery or is past its printed date, book a proper diagnosis.
What do you check on the visit?
We read the unit's date stamp against its designed lifespan, check the battery and power supply, interpret the chirp or fault pattern using the manufacturer's meaning, inspect for contamination, and assess whether its placement matches the guidance for CO alarms. Then we explain the findings and quote before any work.
What should I do if the CO alarm is sounding now?
Do not stay inside to investigate: get everyone and pets out into fresh air immediately, and call for medical help if anyone has symptoms such as headache, dizziness or nausea. Let the alarm sound or reset it only once you are outside and clear. Diagnosis of the alarm itself comes after everyone is safe.
How long do carbon monoxide alarms last?
Most have a designed lifespan of five to ten years, printed on the unit or in the manual. After that the sensing cell can no longer be trusted even if the test button still works, because a test button checks the sounder, not the sensing cell's sensitivity. We read the date stamp and give you an honest verdict.
How is a CO alarm visit priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any replacement alarm or parts are quoted separately so you know exactly what you are approving.
