An intruder sensor that no longer triggers is a fault that hides in plain sight. The panel may show a missing or faulty zone, the alarm may refuse to set, or — most worryingly — nothing may appear wrong at all until you walk the route the sensor was meant to cover and the siren stays silent. PIR motion detectors, magnetic contacts, curtain sensors and shock sensors all stop triggering for a short list of reasons, and diagnosing rather than replacing is nearly always the cheaper, better route. Our visit is structured to prove the actual cause and restore detection you can rely on again.
Why intruder sensors stop triggering
The leading causes are mundane. On wireless sensors, a flat or dying battery is the top culprit, often producing intermittent response before final failure — a sensor that triggers slowly, at half range or only when you walk straight through its centre is usually a battery warning, not a broken unit. Tamper faults are next: a sensor case that has not been closed properly after a battery change, or a tamper switch that has stuck, can put the whole zone out of service on some panels. Physical causes follow: a knocked or drifted sensor pointing away from its coverage area, a contact pair separated by a dropped door or swollen frame, or a dirty PIR lens that no longer sees heat movement clearly. On wired systems, broken or chafed cabling and loose connections at the panel account for many dead zones. And on wireless systems generally, a lost or degraded radio link — a sensor moved, a hub relocated, new interference in the home — can leave a sensor alive but unheard.
How we diagnose it
The walk test is our first instrument: we put the panel into its test mode and move through the space while watching what the system reports, which distinguishes a dead sensor from a mis-aimed one from a marginal one within minutes. From there we check the battery and contacts, the tamper switch and case closure, the alignment and field of view, the lens condition, and the wiring on hard-wired zones. On wireless units we check signal strength and, where the equipment supports it, re-establish the pairing properly rather than by trial and error. Panel diagnostics often identify the failing zone precisely, and we use them rather than guessing. You end the visit with a named cause and a clear recommendation.
Repairs, replacements and expectations
Batteries, contacts, tamper switches, alignment and radio links cover most repairs, and all are quoted before work begins. Where a sensor has genuinely failed internally or is obsolete and unsupported by your panel, we will say that replacement is the honest option, matched to what your system accepts, with parts quoted separately. If we find the sensor was never suited to its position — too small a coverage pattern for the room, or a contact type that cannot tolerate a door's movement — we will say so rather than repeatedly repair the wrong device. No sensor can be guaranteed to detect in every condition, which is exactly why a proper walk test after any repair matters: we verify detection live, with you, before we call the job done.
Booking a sensor diagnosis
Phone or use the website and tell us which sensor or zone is affected, what the panel shows, and whether the fault is total or intermittent. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A security sensor that fails to trigger when it should is more unsettling than one that fails loudly, because you only find out when you test it — or worse, when you don't. The causes are usually findable and often simple. We test the sensor properly, tell you exactly what has failed, and quote before we fix anything.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about intruder sensor not triggering
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I test an intruder sensor myself?
Yes — most panels have a walk test or engineer-test mode described in the manual, and running it periodically is genuinely useful. Replacing a battery where the manual supports it is also fine DIY. But opening sensor cases, re-pairing wireless units or touching wiring often creates tamper faults, so anything beyond that is best diagnosed properly.
What do you check when a sensor will not trigger?
We run a walk test against the panel, check the battery and contacts, verify the tamper switch and case, inspect alignment and field of view, clean and check the lens, and test wiring or the radio link as appropriate. You get the named cause and options before any repair is quoted.
Is it safe to bypass a sensor that is not working?
Bypassing leaves a deliberate hole in your alarm cover, so we do not treat it as a solution — our job is to restore the zone. If a sensor must be taken out of service temporarily while a part is sourced, we will tell you plainly what that means and how soon we can complete the repair.
Why does my sensor only trigger when I walk right through the middle?
Half-range response usually means a dying battery on a wireless sensor, a dirty or obscured lens, or a sensor that has drifted out of alignment so its pattern only just reaches you. All three are worth diagnosing promptly, because they degrade further and leave gaps in cover you may not notice until you need it.
How is this repair priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. After diagnosis, the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any parts — battery, sensor, bracket or cable — are quoted separately.
