Entry system lockouts come in two kinds: a deliberate lockout imposed by the system — after too many wrong code attempts, on a tamper alert, or on an expired code — and a functional lockout where the system has failed entirely and nothing works. Both leave you outside, but they mean different things and they resolve differently, which is why guessing and retrying is the worst response.

Why entry systems lock out

Deliberate lockouts are a security feature: most keypads impose a timeout after a set number of wrong attempts, and some escalate it with each repeat — so hammering the code extends your wait rather than shortening it. Codes can expire on systems where they are time-limited, or be changed by a landlord or agent without everyone being told. Tamper lockouts engage when the system detects interference — a knocked keypad, a forced attempt, sometimes even weather damage being read as tampering. Functional lockouts follow power failures, dead batteries, failed keypads or controllers, and lock mechanisms that have jammed. Occasionally the lockout is administrative: an account or code deactivated on a managed system.

What to do first

Stop entering codes. Repeated wrong attempts reset and extend lockout timers on most systems. Wait out the lockout period if one has been triggered, then enter the code slowly and carefully once. Check for a low-battery warning on battery units and replace batteries if the manual shows how. Ask your landlord, agent or neighbours whether the code has changed. If none of that resolves it, book a visit and tell us everything you have noticed — the history matters for diagnosis.

How we diagnose a lockout

We establish which kind of lockout you are experiencing: is the keypad alive and refusing codes, or dead? Does it show a lockout or tamper indicator? We then test the keypad's power and keys, check for tamper states and reset them properly, verify whether the correct code is being accepted, and measure the release signal at the lock. Mechanical causes get checked too — a door that has dropped or swollen can jam the bolt so a perfectly good code appears dead. On shared systems, whether other residents are locked in or out tells us whether the fault is communal or specific.

Repairs and access

Fixes include resetting tamper states, reprogramming or updating codes, replacing batteries, repairing or replacing failed keypads and controllers, repairing lock supplies and strikes, and realigning doors that have jammed the mechanism. On communal systems, code changes and work on shared equipment normally need your landlord's or managing agent's authorisation, which we will help you arrange. Parts are quoted separately and the full cost is approved before work starts. We do not force doors, drill locks or bypass security under any circumstances — if you need entry while the fault stands, that comes from whoever manages the building or holds keys.

Honest expectations

We diagnose before quoting, so no cost can be promised in advance. If the lockout is administrative on a managed system — a deactivated code, for instance — the fix may be a phone call to the manager rather than a repair, and we will say so rather than charge for work that is not ours to do.

When to book

Book when a lockout persists after waiting and one careful attempt, when the keypad is dead, when tamper or error indicators stay lit, or when the whole building cannot gain entry. Tell us the system make if known, whether others are affected, and exactly what the keypad has been doing.

A lockout is urgent, but urgency is exactly when calm diagnosis pays off. Get in touch and we will restore your access properly, at a price agreed before we start.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

An entry system that has locked everyone out turns a small fault into an urgent one, and it needs calm, methodical diagnosis rather than repeated attempts that can extend the lockout. We find out why the system is refusing entry — code, keypad, power or lock — and fix it at a price you approve. We never force doors or bypass locks to get you back in.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about entry system lockout

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What should I do when my entry system locks me out?

Stop entering codes — repeated wrong attempts extend system lockouts. Wait out any timeout, then try the code once, carefully. Replace batteries if the unit shows a low-battery warning, and ask your landlord or neighbours whether the code changed. If it still fails, book a visit.

What do you check when a system has locked everyone out?

We establish whether the lockout is deliberate — wrong attempts, tamper state, expired code — or a functional failure, then test the keypad and its power, reset tamper states, verify code acceptance and check the lock and door. The fix is quoted and approved before work starts.

Can you bypass the lock to get us in faster?

No — we never force doors, drill locks or bypass security. If you need entry urgently while the fault stands, contact whoever manages the building or holds keys. We repair the system so it works properly again.

Our code stopped working after too many wrong tries by a visitor — is that serious?

Usually not — most systems release the lockout after a timeout, and one careful entry with the correct code will then work. If the system stays locked out beyond that, there may be a tamper state or fault that needs clearing, which we can do on a visit.

What does a lockout diagnosis cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis we quote the full cost before starting, with parts like batteries, keypads or locks quoted separately, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
