When an access code stops working, the fault could sit in the code itself, the keypad reading it, the controller checking it, or the lock releasing on it. Sorting those apart is what our visit does. It matters because the fixes are entirely different: reprogramming costs minutes, a failed keypad or controller costs parts, and a lock fault means working on the door hardware.
Why codes stop working
The simplest and most common cause is change: codes on many systems expire after a set period, or have been changed by a landlord, agent or another resident without everyone being told. Some systems limit how many wrong attempts are allowed before locking out for a period — so a code that is subtly mistyped can look like a dead code. Battery-powered keypads can have enough charge to light up but not enough to drive the lock. Beyond the code, the keypad itself fails — worn membranes, stuck or dead keys, moisture ingress in external units — and the controller or the lock's release circuit can fail so the correct code is accepted but nothing opens. Doors that have swelled or dropped can also jam the lock so the mechanism releases but the bolt cannot withdraw.
How we diagnose
We start with the obvious: is the code actually the current one, and is there a lockout period in play? We test the keypad's keys and its power, check whether the system acknowledges a correct entry, and measure the release signal at the lock. That sequence separates a code problem from a hardware problem cleanly. We also inspect the door and strike for the mechanical jams that mimic electronic faults. On shared systems, whether other residents' codes work tells us whether the fault is general or specific to one code or one user.
Repairs and reprogramming
Where the issue is a code, we reprogramme it — with your authorisation, and with the landlord's or agent's approval where the system is communal, since code management in a shared building is the building manager's responsibility. Hardware faults are repaired or the component replaced: keypads, controllers, lock supplies and strikes. Parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts. We do not bypass locks, force doors or recommend defeating the entry system to regain access — if you are locked out while the fault stands, that needs to be resolved through whoever manages the building or holds keys.
What you can try first
Re-enter the code slowly and carefully — mistypes are commoner than failures — and wait out any lockout period the system may impose. Check whether the keypad shows a low-battery warning. Ask your landlord or neighbours whether the code has changed. If the keypad is dead or the code is confirmed current and still failing, book a visit.
Honest expectations
We diagnose before quoting, so no cost can be promised in advance. If the fault is in communal equipment or the code system is managed by your landlord or agent, we may need their involvement and permission before changing anything — we will tell you early if so. If the fault turns out to be the door rather than the electronics, we will say so plainly.
When to book
Call when a confirmed current code stops working, when the keypad is dead or unresponsive on some keys, when entry works intermittently, or when the whole building's codes have failed. Tell us the system make if known, whether others are affected, and whether you are currently locked out.
A dead code is a small fault with a big impact. Get in touch and we will diagnose the chain properly and restore your access at a price agreed before we start.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An access code that suddenly stops working locks you out of your own building until it is resolved, and the cause is not always obvious. Codes can expire or be changed, keypads can fail, and the lock behind them can develop faults that mimic a code problem. We diagnose the whole chain from code entry to lock release and quote the fix before starting. We never bypass a lock to restore access.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about access code not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I reprogramme my own access code?
On some systems the manufacturer's manual describes a user-code change and that is fine to follow. On communal systems, code management belongs to the landlord or managing agent, and we will not change shared codes without their authorisation.
What do you check when an access code fails?
We confirm the code is current and no lockout is active, test the keypad's keys and power, check whether the controller accepts a correct entry, and measure the release signal at the lock. That tells us whether the fault is the code, the keypad, the controller or the lock — then we quote the fix.
Could the door itself be why the code 'isn't working'?
Yes — a door that has swelled or dropped can jam the lock so the bolt cannot withdraw even though the code was accepted and the mechanism released. We check door alignment as part of the diagnosis and will say plainly if the fault is mechanical rather than electronic.
We're locked out because the code stopped working — can you let us in?
We do not force doors or bypass locks under any circumstances. If you are locked out, access needs to come from whoever manages the building or holds keys; we will repair the fault so the system works properly again.
What does it cost to fix?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Once diagnosed, the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts like keypads or locks quoted separately.
