Handsets take more physical punishment than any other part of a door entry system. They are lifted, dropped, yanked by their cords, splashed and leaned on daily, so it is no surprise that handset faults are the most common intercom repairs we see. The encouraging part: many are simple, and even a full handset replacement is usually straightforward when the right part can be matched.

Common handset damage and faults

Cracked or broken casings from drops are the most visible problem. Broken cradle hooks stop the handset seating properly, which can cause both a rattling nuisance and speech faults if the hookswitch depends on it. Cords fail at the strain reliefs where they flex most — a frayed or internal-broken cord causes intermittent or one-way audio. Buttons wear out: the door release button and the talk button are mechanical switches that eventually stop making contact. Internal damage from liquid spills is common too, and the symptoms — sticky buttons, distorted audio, dead unit — often appear days after the spill itself. Age degrades speakers and microphones gradually, producing faint or muffled sound rather than sudden failure.

Repair or replace — how we decide

We start by establishing whether the fault is in the handset or in the wiring and connection behind it, because replacing a good handset fixes nothing. Then we assess the handset itself. External damage to casings and cradles is usually repairable with the right parts. Cord and button failures are routine repairs. Where internal elements have failed, or the case is shattered, or liquid damage has corroded the internals, a replacement handset is usually more sensible and often cheaper than the repair. We will say which applies and why, and quote both options where there is a genuine choice.

Matching the right handset

Handsets are system-specific: the connections, hookswitch wiring and dimensions must match your system. We identify your system and supply a compatible handset — the manufacturer's own where available, or a proven compatible equivalent where the original is discontinued. This is a standard part of the visit, not a gamble; if no compatible handset exists for a very old system, we will tell you what the realistic options are, including a monitor or system change, before anything is ordered.

What we do during the visit

The visit covers testing the existing handset and its connection, confirming the fault, agreeing the repair or replacement with you, and fitting it — including re-terminating the wiring to the correct cores. Cord replacements, cradle repairs and button replacements are all fitted and tested for speech and release in both directions before we leave. Parts are quoted separately from labour, and the full cost is approved before work starts.

What you can safely do

Reseating the handset in its cradle is always safe. Drying a spilled-on handset by leaving it upright and unplugged is reasonable first aid. Do not open the handset casing, attempt to splice a broken cord, or glue a broken cradle back — improvised repairs usually make matching and repair harder and can mask the underlying fault.

Honest expectations

We diagnose before quoting, so no cost can be promised before we have seen the handset. Repair gives no guarantee against future wear — handsets are consumable-adjacent items and heavily used ones wear again. Where your building's handset is communal property or the system is managed, permission from the landlord or agent may be needed.

When to book

Call when the handset is cracked, the cradle is broken, the cord is frayed or intermittent, buttons have stopped responding, or audio has faded or become one-sided. Tell us the system make if you know it, or send a photo of the handset if you can — it helps us arrive with likely parts.

A broken handset is an everyday fault with an everyday fix. Get in touch and we will assess it honestly and fit the right replacement at a price you approve.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

The handset is the part of your intercom you handle every day, so it is the part that wears out, gets dropped and breaks first. A cracked case, a broken cradle, a frayed cord or buttons that have stopped responding are all everyday repairs. We assess the damage honestly — repair where repair makes sense, replace where it does not — and quote before any work is done.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about damaged intercom handset

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I replace my intercom handset myself?

We would not recommend it — handsets are wired to specific cores of your system and an incorrect connection can cause one-way audio or silence the whole line. Reseating the handset is safe; replacement and re-termination are engineer work, and we supply and fit matched handsets.

What do you check on a damaged handset visit?

We confirm whether the fault is the handset or the connection behind it, assess the case, cradle, cord, buttons and internal elements, then agree repair or replacement with you and quote before fitting. Speech and door release are tested both ways before we leave.

I spilt a drink on my intercom handset — what should I do?

Unplug or seat it out of use if you can, leave it upright to dry, and do not use a hairdryer or open the casing. Liquid damage often causes faults days later as it corrodes contacts, so book a check even if it seems to have recovered.

What if my handset model is discontinued?

Most handsets have compatible equivalents available even when the original is no longer made. We identify your system and source a matched unit, quoting it separately before ordering. If no compatible handset exists we will explain the realistic options before anything is bought.

How much does handset repair or replacement cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with the handset or parts quoted separately.
