Most shed doors stop closing for one of a handful of reasons, and the fix depends entirely on which one it is. That's why we diagnose before we reach for the screws — slamming a swollen door shut or packing a hinge with wedges usually makes the problem worse within a week.
Why shed doors stop closing
Doors drop when hinge screws pull out of soft timber or when the hinge itself wears, letting the leading edge drag on the frame. Doors swell when damp gets into bare timber — a door that sticks only in wet weather is telling you it's absorbing water, often because paint or treatment has failed on the edges. Frames move when the shed itself shifts on an uneven or sinking base, twisting the opening out of square. Latches and hasps misalign for the same reasons, so a lock that stops lining up with its strike plate is often a symptom of movement rather than a broken lock. Warped boards, loose bracing and impact damage complete the list.
What we assess
We check how the door hangs, where it binds and whether the problem changes with the weather — a door that's fine in August and immovable in January is a moisture problem. We examine the hinges and fixings for wear and for screws pulling out of rotten or soft wood, check the frame for square and stability, and look at the shed's base and corners for movement that's twisting the opening. We also check the latch, hasp and lock alignment, because getting the door to close is only half the job if it won't fasten.
Repairs we carry out
Typical fixes include re-fixing or replacing worn hinges with better-length screws into sound timber, packing or reinforcing fixings where the original wood has failed, planing or easing a swollen edge and resealing it so it doesn't take water again, and adjusting the frame or bracing where movement has pulled the opening out of shape. If the door timber itself is rotten or badly warped, a replacement door or a rebuilt frame is the honest answer, and we'll quote that rather than flog a dying door. Where the real cause is the shed moving on a poor base, we'll explain that repairs to the door alone won't hold and give you the option of addressing the base too. Any parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts.
Limits and good practice
We don't force doors, and we won't leave you with a door that only closes if you lift, kick or slam it. Some seasonal movement in timber is normal — the aim is a door that closes cleanly year-round, which usually means dealing with the moisture or movement rather than shaving the wood ever smaller. If the door problem is really a security problem, we can look at the whole closing and locking arrangement as one job.
It's also worth checking what you store against the door before we visit. Heavy items propped against an inward-pressing panel, or a bike handle permanently wedged against the closing edge, can create exactly the distortion that looks like a door fault. If that's part of your situation, we'll point it out — small changes in how the door area is used often decide whether an adjustment holds or slowly works loose again.
Booking your visit
Contact us by phone or through the website and tell us the shed's make and approximate age, what the door does when you try to close it, whether it's worse in wet weather and whether the lock lines up. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

A shed door that won't shut properly is more than an annoyance — it leaves your stored tools exposed to rain and opportunist hands. Usually the cause is simple: a dropped hinge, a swollen board or a frame that has moved with the seasons. Our visit finds the real reason, fixes it properly and checks the door closes without a fight.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about shed door not closing properly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a sticking shed door myself?
Tightening hinge screws or easing a slightly swollen edge with a plane is reasonable DIY. But if screws keep pulling out, the door sticks only when wet, or the frame looks twisted, the underlying cause needs proper attention — repeatedly forcing a swollen door cracks it and makes the eventual repair bigger.
What do you check when a door won't close?
We look at how the door hangs, the state of the hinges and fixings, whether the door or frame has swollen or warped, whether the shed's base has moved and twisted the opening, and how the latch and lock line up. Then we fix the cause and quote before starting.
My shed door sticks only in winter — is that normal?
Timber movement with moisture is common, but a door that swings freely in summer and jams in winter is absorbing water, usually through untreated edges or a failed finish. We ease the binding and reseal the door so the swelling doesn't keep returning each wet season.
Can you make the door lock properly again as well?
Yes — a misaligned hasp or strike plate is usually a symptom of the same drop or movement that stops the door closing. We realign or replace the hardware as part of the job; if the lock itself is worn or broken, a replacement is quoted separately before fitting.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately, so you know the total before we pick up a screwdriver.
