Hinges are the hardest-working part of any shed door, and they fail in predictable ways. The screw holes strip out, the hinge pin wears and the leaves bend, or the timber they're fixed to goes soft and lets the whole door sag. A sagging door doesn't just hang badly — it drags on the frame, misaligns the hasp and lock, and puts strain on the boards around it until the door itself starts to break up.

Why shed door hinges fail

The most common failure is screws pulling out of the frame timber. Shed frames are often softwood, and over years of opening and closing, repeated loading works the screws loose until the door drops. Water is the other big culprit: rain wicks into screw holes and hinge joints, rotting the local timber so the screws have nothing to grip. Cheap or light hinges simply wear out — the pin wears oval, the leaves twist, and the door starts to bind. Wind slamming an unfastened door rips fixings out in one go, and impact damage from bikes and mowers finishes the job. Rust on older hinges seizes them until the door can barely move.

What we assess

We look at the whole hanging arrangement, not just the hinge. That means the state of the frame timber where the hinges fix, whether the screws have pulled out and torn the wood, whether the door boards around the hinges have cracked or rotted, how the hinge hardware itself has failed, and whether the drop has already twisted the door or misaligned the closing hardware. If the frame timber is soft behind the hinges, fitting new hinges into the same holes is a waste of money — the repair has to give the new fixings sound wood to grip.

How we repair it

Sound timber and worn hardware is the easy case: we replace the hinges with suitably rated ones, using fixings long enough and properly seated to hold for years. Where the wood has failed, we repair it first — plugging or filling stripped holes, or splicing in new treated timber where the frame has rotted — before hanging the door, so the fixings bite into solid material. If the door has been twisting in its frame, we ease the binding edges and reseal them against moisture. Where a door has torn itself apart or the frame around the hinges is rotten beyond saving, we'll quote a rebuilt frame or replacement door honestly rather than fit new hinges to old rot. Any parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is approved before work starts.

Security, timing and limits

A door that hangs badly rarely fastens properly, so we check the hasp, latch and lock alignment as part of the same job and adjust or replace as needed. Shed door repairs can be done in most weather since the work is sheltered, though replacement timber and finishes need dry conditions to cure properly. We don't promise a repair before diagnosis, and we can't guarantee timber against future rot — but hinges fixed into sound, treated wood are the difference between a repair that lasts and one that's back on the list next spring.

Booking your repair

Call or book through the website and tell us the shed's age and material, how the door is hanging now, whether it still closes at all and whether the lock lines up. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A shed door that's sagging on its hinges, grinding or hanging loose is a door heading for trouble — and often the timber around the hinges is the real problem, not the hardware. We assess the door, frame and fixings together, repair what's failed and quote the full job before we start so there are no surprises.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about broken shed door hinges

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I replace shed door hinges myself?

Swapping like-for-like hinges is good DIY if the timber is sound. The trap is when the screws have pulled out of soft or rotten wood — new hinges in the same stripped holes just fail again. If the wood around the hinges is soft or the door has dropped badly, a proper repair of the fixing base is worth doing first.

What do you check on a broken hinge visit?

We examine the hinge hardware, the state of the frame timber where it fixes, whether screws have torn out the wood, whether the door boards have cracked and how the drop has affected the closing and locking. We then repair the wood as well as the hardware so the fix actually holds.

Will you also fix the door so it closes properly?

Yes — a dropped door binds on the frame and misaligns the hasp, so easing and resealing the edges and realigning the closing hardware are part of the same job. If the lock itself is worn or broken, a replacement is quoted separately before fitting.

Should I upgrade to heavier hinges?

Often a sensible move, especially on larger or heavier doors and on sheds that take wind. We assess the door weight and frame condition and recommend hardware that suits them; any parts are quoted separately so you can approve the cost before we fit them.

How much does the repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately, so the price you approve is the price you pay.
