Loose panels are among the most common shed problems, and among the most underrated. What starts as a rattle in a breeze ends as a panel torn off in a gale, an open gap in the shed's weather line, and often damage to neighbouring panels that took the strain. The cause is rarely just the panel itself — it's usually the fixings, the frame behind them, or the way the panel was originally fitted.

Why panels come loose

Wind loading works fixings loose over time, especially short screws into softwood that give under repeated flexing. Timber frames shrink and move with the seasons, opening the grip on nails and screws. Water behind a panel rots the frame member it's fixed to, leaving screws nothing to bite. Impact damage — mowers, bins, footballs — cracks panels and spreads fixings. On metal sheds, corroded fixings let sheets shift at the laps; on plastic sheds, trims crack and panels pop out of their channels. And some panels were simply under-fixed from new, holding on until the first serious storm finds them.

What we assess

We check every panel on the affected side, not just the obviously loose one — fixings that have started to move usually affect their neighbours. We examine the frame members behind the panels for rot, cracking and movement, the condition of the fixings themselves, and the trims and weather seals at panel edges. We also look at the roof edge and corners, where wind finds the first purchase, and at the base line, where water keeps the bottom of panels and their fixings damp. If the frame behind a flapping panel is soft, refixing into it is wasted money, so the wood gets repaired first.

How we repair it

Sound panels with failed fixings are refixed properly — correct fixings, correctly spaced, biting into sound timber or reinforced points — and edges are resealed so wind and rain stay outside. Damaged or split panels are replaced or repaired, matched to the shed where possible, with materials quoted separately. Soft frame members are repaired or spliced before panels go back. Trims and seals are renewed where they've cracked, and corner and roof-edge fixings are strengthened where wind has been working them. The aim is a shed shell that's tight and evenly fixed, not just the one panel that was rattling. The full cost is approved before work starts.

Weather and honest limits

Panel work needs dry conditions where sealing is involved, and we'll reschedule around storms rather than fix panels in a gale — no one wins that race. We can't guarantee panels against future wind damage, but properly fixed panels with sound timber behind them are a very different proposition from a shed held together by tired nails. If the shed is old and its panel material is unknown, we won't disturb anything that could contain asbestos and will recommend testing instead.

Where several panels are affected, it's worth agreeing the full scope in one quote rather than fixing the worst and hoping for the best. Panels share fixings and frame members, so a half-repaired side still flexes where the untouched sections remain loose — and the flapping tends to migrate to whatever was left alone. A complete, evenly fixed wall is stronger than the sum of its panels and usually costs little more than two visits would.

Booking your repair

Call or book through the website and tell us which panels are loose, the shed's size, age and material, and whether the rattle appeared after a storm or has crept up gradually. You'll pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A panel that flaps or rattles in the wind is a small problem waiting to become a big one — every storm tears out more fixings until the panel comes free, and rain gets behind it in the meantime. Our visit secures the loose panels properly, checks the frame and fixings that support them, and makes sure the weather line is closed again.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about loose shed panels

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I refix a loose shed panel myself?

Screwing a panel back down is fine DIY if the frame behind is sound — use proper fixings rather than reusing the old holes. But if the rattle keeps returning or the screws spin without gripping, the frame member behind is likely soft or split, and refixing into it just hides the problem until the next storm.

What do you check besides the loose panel itself?

We test the neighbouring panels and fixings, examine the frame members behind for rot and movement, check the trims and seals at the edges, and look at corners, the roof edge and the base line where wind and water start their work. Fixing the one panel without checking its neighbours usually means we're back next spring.

Should I wait until after the storm season to fix it?

We'd advise against it — a loose panel lets rain behind the shell and tears out more fixings with every blow, so damage compounds while you wait. We schedule panel work for dry weather windows, so booking early usually means it's sorted before the next serious blow arrives.

Can you replace a panel that's damaged beyond repair?

Yes — we source matching or compatible panels and quote the replacement materials separately before fitting, so you approve the cost. If matching is difficult on an older shed, we'll explain the options honestly before you decide.

How much does it cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately — no work proceeds without your approval.
