The thermostat or temperature control system is the brain of an oven's heating behaviour, and when it drifts or fails the symptoms are maddeningly varied: overheating, underheating, cycling that never settles, or an oven that will not heat at all. Because those symptoms overlap with element, sensor and airflow faults, the thermostat needs testing, not just suspecting. That is precisely what this visit does.
Fuel type defines the scope
In an electric oven the thermostat, sensor, elements and wiring are all electrical, and diagnosing and repairing them sits within our competence. In a gas oven the thermostat and its associated gas components sit on the gas side, which only a Gas Safe registered engineer may touch; we never carry out gas work, but we can explain what the evidence suggests and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with. Tell us the fuel type, brand and full model number when booking, as thermostat parts are model-specific.
Symptoms that point this way
Classic thermostat complaints include an oven that overheats and burns food on the set temperature, one that barely reaches temperature, one that oscillates between hot and cool, or one that heats only when the dial is turned far beyond the intended setting. An oven that will not heat at all can also be a dead thermostat, though a failed element is equally likely. The pattern of the misbehaviour is diagnostic gold, so describe it in detail when you book: which setting, how long, what the results were.
How we test the thermostat
With the appliance safely isolated we measure the thermostat or sensor electrically against its expected behaviour, test the continuity of the heating circuit through it, inspect its mounting and wiring, and cross-check against the elements and fan, which can produce lookalike symptoms. Where the oven has electronic temperature control, the sensor and the control board are assessed together, because either can be the culprit. Where the evidence points to the gas side of a gas appliance, we stop clearly and arrange the referral. You will hear what each test showed and what it rules out.
The repair itself
A mechanical thermostat that has drifted can sometimes be recalibrated; when the mechanism has failed, replacement is the fix, using the correct part for your model, which we identify and quote separately from the labour. Electronic sensors are usually straightforward replacements. Where multiple components are implicated, we will cost the options honestly against the oven's age. Everything is quoted in full, including parts, and no work begins until you approve the price.
What we cannot promise in advance
Until the thermostat is tested we cannot say that it alone is at fault, and we will not order parts on speculation. Equally, if testing shows the thermostat is healthy and the fault lies elsewhere, we will say so and quote for the real repair instead. Either way you end up spending on the actual problem rather than a plausible guess.
Safety and interim advice
Do not run an oven you suspect of overheating unattended, and never use it to test whether the fault has cured by leaving food in it. Stop using an appliance that trips the electrics or smells of burning until assessed. If your oven is gas and you ever smell gas, follow the emergency steps and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside the property.
Booking your thermostat diagnosis
Send us your postcode, the oven's make, model and fuel type, and a full description of the temperature misbehaviour. We will arrange a visit, test the system thoroughly and give you a clear, approved price before any work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A failing thermostat shows itself in burnt bakes, undercooked middles and an oven that never quite settles. It is also the component most often blamed when the real fault lies elsewhere. Our visit tests the thermostat properly in the context of the whole oven, so you fix the actual cause once rather than chasing parts by trial and error.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about thermostat fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
How do I know if my thermostat is actually faulty?
You largely cannot know without testing, which is why guessing is expensive. Symptoms like overheating or oscillation point that way, but elements, sensors and fans can mimic them. The visit tests the thermostat against real behaviour before any conclusion is drawn.
What does the diagnosis involve?
We isolate the appliance and measure the thermostat or sensor electrically, test the heating circuit through it, and cross-check the elements, fan and wiring. You get a clear verdict, an explanation of the fault and a written quote before anything is replaced.
Can you recalibrate instead of replacing?
Sometimes. Mechanical thermostats with a small drift can often be recalibrated, while a failed mechanism needs the correct replacement part. Electronic systems usually mean sensor or board diagnosis. We will tell you which applies after testing, and quote whichever route is needed.
My gas oven's thermostat seems broken. Can you replace it?
No. Gas oven thermostats are gas-side components that only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on, and we never carry out gas work. We can explain the symptoms, complete any safe electrical checks, and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with.
What will this cost?
You pay the booking fee when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. The thermostat part is identified and quoted separately from labour, the full cost is approved by you before work starts, and there are no hidden extras.
