A new cooker is a significant purchase, and its installation decides whether it performs as intended for years or becomes a source of niggles and call-backs. Because most cookers involve electricity and many involve gas, the first question is always who is permitted to connect what. This page explains exactly how we handle that, and how the job reaches a properly finished state.
The gas boundary, stated clearly
Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work. We do not connect, disconnect, alter or commission gas supplies, hoses, regulators or appliances. If your cooker is gas or dual fuel, the gas connection and any gas-side commissioning belong to a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we work closely with a trusted partner who handles exactly that and quotes it directly. What we can do is cover the electrical side of the installation, the positioning and securing of the appliance, and the non-gas checks that make the whole job safe and tidy.
Checks before anything is connected
Whether the cooker is electric or gas, the site checks come first. For the electrical side we confirm the cooker point or socket, its rating and the isolator's position match what the manufacturer requires, and that the circuit is sound. We verify the aperture or space dimensions against the cooker's spec, including door swing and clearance behind for hoses or connections. We check access through the property, since cookers are heavy and awkward. We inspect the old appliance's connections and the state of the floor and surrounding surfaces. These checks are what prevent the classic post-installation problems.
The installation sequence
For an electric cooker we make the connection as specified, secure the appliance, level it and test it thoroughly: power-up, controls, oven heating, grill, hobs, door closure and lights. For a gas or dual-fuel cooker, the Gas Safe partner makes the gas connection and commissions the gas side, including the safety checks only they may perform, while we handle the electrical connection and the physical installation, coordinating the order of work so nothing is done twice. If the electrical supply needs attention, such as an unsuitable isolator, we explain and quote that separately before proceeding.
What can extend the job, honestly
Older kitchens sometimes hide surprises: a cooker point that no longer meets the new appliance's requirements, a floor or cabinet that needs adjustment, or a space that was sized for a smaller cooker. Where that happens we explain the finding, quote the extra work for your approval and, where appropriate, stage the job across visits rather than rushing it. The initial estimate covers a defined installation, and anything beyond that is quoted separately, always with your approval before it starts.
Safety afterwards
If your cooker is gas, remember the ongoing rules: only Gas Safe engineers may service or repair its gas side, and any smell of gas is an emergency, not a booking. Do not use switches or flames, ventilate if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. Keep the cooker from being pushed against its hose when cleaning behind it.
Booking your installation
Contact us with your postcode, the cooker's make, model and fuel type, its rating, and whether it replaces a like-for-like appliance. Photos of the existing connections and space help us quote accurately. We will confirm exactly what the visit covers, coordinate the gas partner where needed, and leave you with a cooker that has been properly tested.
If you are unsure whether your cooker is gas, dual fuel or fully electric, the rating plate and the presence of a gas hose behind the appliance will usually settle it, and we can confirm from photos before planning the visit.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Cooker installations often involve both electricity and gas, and each must be connected by the right people. We handle the electrical side within our competence, arrange any gas connection through a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, and make sure the checks that prevent later problems are done before anything is connected.

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about cooker installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can Maintenance Men connect my gas cooker?
No. Gas connections and commissioning require Gas Safe registration, which we do not hold, and we never carry out gas work. We handle the electrical and physical installation and arrange the gas connection through a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, who quotes that portion directly.
What checks do you do before installing the cooker?
The supply, cooker point and isolator against the appliance's requirements, the space and aperture dimensions, access through the property, and the condition of existing connections. Anything needing extra work is explained and quoted separately before it proceeds.
Will one visit complete the whole installation?
Often yes, but not always. Where the electrical supply needs attention, or the gas partner's work needs coordinating, the job may be staged across visits. We will be clear about this at the quoting stage rather than promising an appointment that cannot deliver it all.
My old cooker is still connected. Can you remove it?
An electric cooker's disconnection is within our scope as part of the swap. A gas cooker's disconnection involves gas work and is done by the Gas Safe partner. Tell us the setup when booking and we will plan the sequence properly.
How is the installation priced?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, as shorter notice costs more. The defined installation is quoted upfront, any additional work is quoted and approved separately, and the Gas Safe partner prices their own gas work directly.
