Some smoke from an oven is normal: fat spitting onto a hot element, a dirty tray, or the first use after a long gap. Excessive or repeated smoke is different, and it deserves a proper answer before you keep cooking in it. The cause is usually findable, sometimes trivial and sometimes serious, and the diagnosis tells you which one you are dealing with.
First, if the smoke is heavy right now
If the oven is producing heavy smoke or you can see or smell burning, switch it off at the isolator if it is safe to do so and leave it closed until the smoke settles, then ventilate. If there is any sign of actual fire, do not tackle it yourself: get everyone out and call 999. Once the immediate event has passed, stop using the oven until the cause is understood. A single smoking incident may be a spill; repeated incidents are a fault pattern.
The ordinary causes first
The most common explanation is residue: fat and food debris baked onto the floor, elements or trays, which carbonise and smoke on every use. A dirty oven is a smoking oven. Cleaning it properly, including the floor and around the elements where the manual allows safe access, resolves many cases without any repair. New ovens can also smoke or smell on first use as protective coatings burn off, which the manual usually predicts. If cleaning does not stop the smoke, something else is going on.
When smoke means a fault
Persistent smoke after a genuine clean points to components. An element that has partially failed can smoke where it overheats, and its surface may show blistering or patches. Insulation that has degraded, wiring that has overheated, or a control component that is running hot all produce smoke with a distinctive electrical character: acrid rather than greasy. That kind of smell is a stop-using signal, not a cleaning job. Grease reaching the inside of the appliance through a damaged seal or vent can also smoke from where cleaning cannot reach.
Fuel type matters here as everywhere
For electric ovens, the electrical components producing smoke are within our competence to diagnose and repair. If your oven is gas, gas-side components are strictly for Gas Safe registered engineers and we never carry out gas work; we would assess the safely non-gas aspects, explain what the evidence suggests and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with. If at any point you smell gas, that changes everything: no electrical switches, ventilate if safe, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside.
What our diagnosis involves
We discuss exactly when the smoke occurs: at start-up, during cooking, at particular temperatures or settings, and what it smells like. With the appliance safely isolated we inspect the cavity, elements and internals for carbonised residue, damaged components and signs of overheating, and test the elements and wiring electrically where the evidence points that way. You get a clear explanation of the cause, whether it is residue, a component or both, and a full quoted price for any work before we begin.
Preventing the next episode
Keep the oven floor and trays clean, use trays large enough to catch spitting fat, avoid cooking directly over exposed elements, and have the oven assessed promptly if smoke returns after cleaning. Do not line the oven floor with foil, which can reflect heat onto components and create its own problems.
Booking your diagnosis
Contact us with your postcode, the oven's make, model and fuel type, and a description of the smoking: when it happens, what it smells like and whether cleaning has changed anything. We will arrange a visit, diagnose it properly and quote any work for your approval.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A smoke-filled kitchen is alarming, and repeated smoking is a sign something needs attention rather than a quick wipe. Causes range from baked-on residue to failing components, and telling them apart safely is what our diagnosis does. We identify what is producing the smoke, explain the fix and quote any work before starting it.

Questions people ask about excessive smoke from oven
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
My oven smoked once and seems fine now. Should I worry?
A single episode after a spill or a dirty floor is usually resolved by cleaning once the oven is cold. But if it recurs, produces an acrid electrical smell, or came with tripping or flickering, stop using it and have it diagnosed rather than waiting for a second warning.
What will you check during the visit?
The cavity and trays for carbonised residue, the elements for overheating damage or partial failure, the wiring and internals for scorching, and the seal and vents for grease ingress. You get a clear explanation of the cause and a quoted price for any repair.
What does an electrical smell versus a greasy smell indicate?
A greasy smell suggests fat burning on surfaces and often responds to cleaning. An acrid, sharp smell suggests insulation, wiring or a component overheating, which is a stop-using situation needing diagnosis, not a cleaning job.
My gas oven smokes. Can you look at it?
We can assess the safely non-gas aspects and explain what the evidence suggests, but any gas component belongs to a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we never carry out gas work. We will refer you to a trusted Gas Safe partner we work closely with for that.
How much does the diagnosis cost?
You pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, with shorter notice costing more. Any repair is fully quoted, including parts, and no work goes ahead until you have approved that price.
