Shared access is a useful feature of smart security, but it is also where a system's account rules meet the practical reality of households. One person may own the system, others may be invited users, and each role can have different rights to view cameras, change settings or receive alerts. If a shared user cannot get in, the answer is often not to give everyone the owner's password; it is to correct an invitation or permission that was never set up properly.

Why shared access fails

Invitations can expire before they are accepted, go to a different email address from the one used to sign in, or be accepted while the user is logged into the wrong account. Some systems require the owner to approve a request from inside the app. Permission levels matter too: an invited user might be able to see a camera but not change alert settings, or might be unable to see a device added after their invitation. A phone update or app reinstall can also remove a local session and make a valid user appear to be locked out.

How we diagnose it

We begin with the system owner, because only the owner can authorise many access changes. We check the invitation status, the email address used, the account signed in on the affected phone and the permissions assigned to that user. If access works for the owner but not a guest, that narrows the fault to the invite or role; if everyone is affected, the issue may be account-wide, network-related or a provider service problem. We also check phone app permissions if the user can sign in but does not receive alerts.

Restoring the right access

Typical fixes include cancelling and re-sending an invitation to the correct address, accepting it while signed into the matching account, adjusting the user's permitted role, or restoring app permissions on a new phone. We can guide the owner through these steps and test that the invited user sees what they are supposed to see. We do not need your password, and we will never ask you to share a verification code. We do not bypass owner approval or replace it with a shared login.

Security and household changes

Separate accounts are safer and easier to manage than one password shared across a household. If someone moves out, a phone is lost or a visitor no longer needs access, the owner should revoke that user through the official controls. For rented properties or shared buildings, the landlord or building manager may own the system account, so permission may be needed before changing users. We will not force access or bypass building security.

Limits outside the home

Invites and user management may rely on the manufacturer's app and cloud service. We can diagnose local configuration and show you the supported account workflow, but we cannot guarantee the provider's availability or complete account identity checks on your behalf. If the provider must verify the account, the owner will need to contact them directly.

Booking

Book through the Maintenance Men website or by phone. Tell us who owns the system, which user cannot get in, what happens when they accept the invitation, and whether the problem affects alerts, live viewing or both. Avoid sending passwords, one-time codes or account recovery links.

Keep a simple access record

Once access is restored, make a short note of who owns the system account, which email address each invitation used and what level of access was granted. That record makes later phone changes or household moves easier to manage, and helps the owner quickly revoke access when it is no longer needed. Do not write down passwords or verification codes alongside it; use the manufacturer's account recovery tools and secure password storage instead.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A shared security system should let the right people check in, receive alerts and help manage the home. When an invitation will not arrive, one family member cannot see devices, or access works on one phone but not another, it can be hard to tell whether the system or the account is at fault. We trace user roles and invitations through the official app controls, restoring legitimate access without sharing passwords or weakening security.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about shared access not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I invite another person myself?

Usually, yes. The system owner can invite a user from the app, and the invitee needs to accept it using the account linked to the invited email address. If that process fails or the permissions are unclear, we can diagnose it without sharing credentials.

What do you check for shared access problems?

We check who owns the system, the invitation status and email address, the account signed in on the affected phone, and the role assigned to that user. If sign-in works but alerts do not, we also check phone notification permissions.

Can you let me in if I am not the system owner?

We cannot bypass the owner’s approval or change access without authorisation. The owner needs to invite you through the official app controls, which protects the household and keeps a clear record of who has access.

One family member can view cameras but gets no alerts — why?

That can happen when the shared role allows viewing but not notifications, or when phone permissions are disabled. We can check both the user’s assigned role and the phone settings, then test an alert to confirm the intended access works.

How much will a shared access visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start, with any parts quoted separately.
