Overflowing drain channels are the visible sign of a system that has stopped accepting water. Channel drains — the long grates across drives, patios and thresholds — and the gullies they feed are designed to take surface water away quickly; when they overflow, the blockage or the limit is downstream, not at the grate you can see.

Why channels overflow

Silt and grit washing in from drives and patios settle along the channel and in the trap below the grate. Leaves pack the channel and the gully it feeds, particularly each autumn. Roof debris comes down connecting downpipes. The run downstream — the pipe carrying water from channel to gully to outfall — may be silted, root-invaded or partially collapsed, holding water back so the channel fills. And at the end of the system, the outfall matters: a silted soakaway or a blocked connection to a main drain stops accepting water, and everything upstream overflows first in heavy rain. Sometimes the honest cause is volume — a system that was adequate when the drive was smaller, or before an extension added roof area, now being asked to handle more water than it was designed for.

How we trace and clear it

We start at the lowest point of the overflow and work upstream: clearing the channel and its trap, rodding and jetting the run to find and shift the restriction, and checking the outfall's rate of take-up. If the system drains to a soakaway, we assess whether it is silted or undersized; if it connects to an existing drainage run or main, we check the connection is clear. We check falls and channel condition as we go — a channel set too flat holds silt and blocks repeatedly. Before any digging or lifting beyond gratings we check for buried services; detectors help, but no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are yours to provide.

A caution worth repeating: never tip caustic supermarket chemicals into outdoor channels or gullies — they damage old pipework and make clearing harder. If any have been used, tell us before we attend.

When clearing is not the whole answer

A cleared system that overflows again in heavy rain may be at its design limit. The honest options are enlarging the system — a bigger channel or additional gullies feeding it, quoted after survey — adding a properly sized soakaway to take the load, or, where the overflow only happens when water arrives from beyond your property, accepting that your system is behaving correctly and the source lies elsewhere. Highway flooding that backs up through a connection is the council's or water company's side, and we help establish responsibility, though we cannot guarantee adoption status.

Aftercare

Sweep channels clear of leaves and grit in autumn, keep connecting gutters clean so debris stays out, and watch how quickly channels empty after rain — slowing emptying is the early sign of silt building. Avoid driving over lightweight channel sections with heavy vehicles; they crack and let silt in below the grate.

Booking

Book a visit and tell us which channels overflow, whether it happens in every rain or only heavy ones, and roughly where the system drains to. Clear the area for access. Clearing within the visit is charged at our standard rates; enlarging or altering the system is quoted after survey and approved before work starts.

Channels deserve a word about their own condition, separate from blockages. A channel that has cracked under vehicles, or whose grating has lifted and let soil in beneath, can look blocked while actually being damaged — clearing the silt helps, but the section will keep collecting soil until it is re-set or replaced. During clearing we check each channel section's condition and tell you which ones are failing, so you can decide between another clearing next year and fixing the section once. There is no pressure either way; the numbers are in front of you.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

When channel drains and gullies overflow together, water is arriving faster than the system can take it away — and that points to a restriction somewhere downstream, or a system at its limit. We trace the run, clear what is blocking it, and check whether the outfall — drain, soakaway or gully — is actually accepting water. If the system is simply too small for what now feeds it, we tell you that honestly.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about overflowing drain channels

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear an overflowing channel drain myself?

Lifting the grate and scooping out leaves and silt, and flushing the channel with a hose, is reasonable DIY. What is not DIY is jetting the downstream run, digging up channels, or opening the outfall — blockages can sit deep, and forcing rods can push debris further in or damage old pipe. Never use caustic supermarket chemicals outdoors; tell us if any have gone in before we attend.

How do you find why my channels overflow?

We clear the channel and trap, then rod or jet downstream to find the restriction, checking the run, the gully it feeds and the outfall's rate of take-up. We also check falls and channel condition, since a flat-set channel blocks repeatedly. The result is a clear answer: blockage, damaged run, silted outfall, or a system genuinely at its limit.

Could the overflow be caused by something beyond my property?

Yes — if your channels only overflow in heavy rain and the highway is flooded too, the system may be backing up from the road side, which sits with the council or water company. We help establish which section is whose responsibility, though we cannot guarantee adoption status, and we will not charge you for clearing what is not the actual problem.

My system overflows every heavy rain even after clearing — what then?

That usually means the system is at its design limit rather than blocked. The honest options are enlarging it — bigger channels or additional gullies — adding a correctly sized soakaway to share the load, or re-routing some water to a better outfall. All of that is quoted after a proper survey, and we will set out what each option realistically achieves before you spend anything.

What does a visit like this cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us. The full cost of clearing and repair work is quoted before we start, so you approve it first, with parts quoted separately. System enlargement or new drainage is surveyed and quoted as a project before any work begins.
