How Rain Damages Outdoor Wiring
Outdoor wiring is built to cope with the weather, but only while it is correctly installed and intact. Rain damages it in several ways:
- Water tracking down cables — if a cable enters a fitting from above without a proper gland or drip loop, rain runs down the sheath straight into the connection.
- Failed seals and joints — connectors and joint boxes that were never weather-rated, or whose seals have perished, let water sit directly on conductors.
- Storm and impact damage — wind-blown debris, falling branches and frozen ground can crack conduit and shear cable clips, opening a path for water.
- Damp working along the cable — moisture that enters at one point creeps along inside the sheath, so damage shows up further along than the entry point.
- Long-term corrosion — even small amounts of damp, repeated over years, corrode copper and terminals until connections fail or overheat.
The Risks of Leaving Wet Wiring Alone
Wet wiring is live wiring in the wrong place. Damp can cause earth leakage that trips the RCD each time it rains, arcing inside joints, and terminals that heat under load. In time, corroded connections can fail altogether or start a fire in a fitting or wall cavity. This is a genuine safety situation: if you suspect rain has got into wiring — especially if something is tripping in wet weather, smells warm, or crackles — switch the affected circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently. Keep clear of any fitting that is wet, scorched or damaged.
How We Diagnose the Damage
We test rather than guess. Starting at the consumer unit, we check how the circuit behaves and whether the protective devices are doing their job. Insulation resistance and earth-loop testing tell us how badly the circuit is affected and roughly where. We then inspect fittings, joints and cable routes, looking for water marks, corrosion and tell-tale staining. Buried or concealed sections are tested section by section so that we only open up what we must. You get a plain-language explanation of what the rain has done and a firm price for putting it right.
How We Repair It
Everything the water has reached is dealt with, not just the obvious spot. Corroded connections and wet joints are replaced with properly sealed, weather-rated connectors. Damaged cable runs are repaired or replaced and routed correctly — entering fittings from below, with drip loops and sound glands so water cannot follow the cable again. Fittings whose seals have failed are swapped for quality weatherproof (IP-rated) units. Once the repair is complete, the whole circuit is tested to confirm the leakage is gone and the RCD holds under load.
Aftercare and Prevention
After heavy weather, it is worth walking the garden occasionally and looking at exposed fittings: staining, a lid that no longer sits square, or green corrosion around a gland are all early warnings. Keep cable routes clear of leaning objects that hold water against them, and never wrap joints in tape as a repair — it holds moisture in rather than out. If a circuit begins tripping only in wet weather, book a check before the next storm rather than after it.
When to Call Us
Book urgently if wiring or fittings are wet and the power is still on, if there is any burning smell or scorching, or if the RCD trips repeatedly. A routine visit is right for weathered fittings that still work and circuits that behave normally in all weathers.

Rain-damaged wiring rarely announces itself — the first signs are often a tripping RCD, lights that flicker in wet weather, or corrosion around a fitting. Water finds its way into outdoor cables and joints through worn seals, poor cable entry and storm damage. We find every place the rain has reached, repair the wiring properly, and seal the route so the next storm stays outside where it belongs.

Questions people ask about rain damaged electrical wiring
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What should I do if I think the wiring is wet right now?
Switch the affected circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely, keep everyone away from wet or damaged fittings, and don't touch anything that is scorched, crackling or smells warm. Then book urgently. Wet wiring with the power still connected is not something to monitor from a distance — it needs making safe properly.
Why does the circuit only trip when it rains?
Rain is getting somewhere it shouldn't — usually a failed seal, a joint or a cable entry — and the moisture leaks current to earth, which the RCD detects. The pattern is the clue: dry weather, no trip; wet weather, trip. It will only get worse as the entry point degrades further, so it should be traced soon.
Can I seal a leaking joint myself with tape?
Self-amalgamating tape on a sound joint is sometimes used, but it is not a repair for wet wiring — tape can trap moisture against conductors and hide the problem while it worsens. The conductors and terminals behind the joint still need testing. Leave outdoor joints to us so they are sealed and tested properly.
What does the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Will you need to dig up or open up my walls?
Only where testing shows it is necessary, and we keep that to the minimum. Faults are located with instruments first so any opening up is a single targeted spot rather than a long chase. We will always explain what needs to be accessed and why before we start, and we tidy up after ourselves.
