How Outdoor Wiring Gets Damaged
Outdoor cable is exposed to a wider range of damage than anything inside the house:
- Mechanical damage — spades and forks, strimmer lines, mowers, ladders, fence posts and vehicles all clip, nick or crush cable that runs along walls, fences or through soil.
- Weathering — sunlight embrittles the sheath, frost cracks it, and years of temperature cycling fatigue it until splits open and moisture gets in.
- Rodents — rats and squirrels chew cable runs in sheds, lofts of garages and along fences, exposing conductors in hidden places.
- Heat and chafing — cable held against hot equipment, or rubbing against a sharp edge in the wind, wears through from the outside in.
- Previous bad repairs — taped joints, wrong connectors and cable left unprotected are damage waiting to declare itself.
Why Damage Outdoors Is More Serious Than It Looks
A nicked sheath indoors is a concern; outdoors it is an open door. Rain and damp reach the conductors through any breach, and the leakage and corrosion that follow cause the familiar failures — tripping RCDs, dead circuits, overheated connections. Exposed conductors in a garden are also within reach of people, pets and tools, on ground that makes any shock more dangerous. Until a damaged section is assessed, treat it as live and keep clear of it; if the cable is visibly cut, split or hanging, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently.
How We Assess the Damage
We isolate the affected circuit and confirm it is dead, then establish how far the damage runs — damage is rarely as localised as it appears, because moisture travels and chafing happens wherever the cable moves. Insulation testing along the run shows whether the conductors and their insulation are sound beyond the visible damage, and we inspect the whole route for other weak points while we are there: the joint that is next to fail, the clip that has gone, the section resting in a puddle. You will get a straight assessment — repair, replace the section, or replace the run — with a firm price for each.
How We Repair It
Localised damage in otherwise sound cable is cut out and the cable rejoined using proper weather-rated, underground-capable connectors — never tape. Longer or degraded sections are replaced with new cable, routed and protected correctly: clipped properly, entered through glands, and run in conduit or at depth where tools and weather will find it. Damaged fittings are replaced with weatherproof (IP-rated) equipment. Everything is tested — insulation, continuity and RCD operation — before the circuit is re-energised, and we record the route and any changes for you.
Aftercare and Prevention
Prevention is mostly about keeping cable out of harm's way: route it where tools and feet do not go, protect it where that is impossible, and note where buried runs cross open ground. Check surface runs after any garden work, and look at wall and fence runs each spring for winter damage. If you know a run crosses your digging ground, ask us to mark it before major garden projects rather than discovering it afterwards.
When to Call Us
Book a routine visit for scuffed, weathered or crushed cable that is still working, and for any damage you have noticed but are unsure about. Book urgently for cable that is cut, split, exposed or hanging, for anything wet or smelling warm near the damage, or for a circuit that has started tripping since the damage occurred — in those cases switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely first.
Book Your Outdoor Wiring Repair Today
We repair damaged outdoor wiring across the West Midlands, with appointments around your week and same-day slots where available. Call or book online and describe what damaged the cable, where it runs, and whether anything has changed since — a circuit that trips after damage tells us the breach is already letting water in. We will assess it, price it plainly, and put it right properly.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Outdoor wiring gets damaged by everything the garden can throw at it — tools, weather, animals and time. Damage that looks minor, a scuffed sheath or a crushed section, often runs deeper than the surface shows. We assess the full extent of the damage, repair or replace the affected wiring properly, and protect it so the same thing does not happen again.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about damaged outdoor wiring
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
The cable looks a bit scuffed but still works — is that a problem?
It can be. The sheath is the cable's only defence against water, and a scuff that has gone through it lets moisture reach the conductors, with leakage and corrosion following over weeks or months. It is worth having the section inspected: if only the outer layer is affected, the repair is quick; if moisture is already in, better to know now.
Can I repair damaged garden cable myself?
Tape and indoor connectors are not weather repairs — they trap moisture and fail within a season, and handling a possibly live damaged cable is a real shock risk. Repairs outdoors need weather-rated connectors, correct cable and testing afterwards. Keep clear of the damage, isolate the circuit if it is visibly broken, and let us do it properly.
Is damaged outdoor wiring dangerous?
It can be, in two ways: exposed conductors where people, pets and tools can touch them, and moisture-driven faults that trip circuits or overheat connections. If the cable is cut, split or hanging, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and keep everyone away until we have assessed it. Working cable with a scuffed sheath is a routine visit.
How much does the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Will the repaired section be as good as new?
With a proper weather-rated joint in sound cable, yes — the repair is rated for outdoor use and tested before the power returns. Where the cable is degraded along a longer stretch, we replace the section rather than stitch it, because a run of joints is a run of future faults. Either way you end up with cable that is sealed, protected and proven.
