What Counts as a Broken Garden Light
Garden fittings fail in ways indoor lights never do. The usual damage looks like:
- Cracked or shattered lenses and casings — from strimmers, mowers, footballs, frost or simple aging of the plastic.
- Water inside the fitting — a failed seal turns a light into a small aquarium; the lamp corrodes and the connections follow.
- Physical breakage — spike lights snapped by footfall, bollards knocked by car doors or bins, wall lights pulled loose by ivy or wind.
- Dead fittings that look fine — internal corrosion, a failed lamp holder or driver, or a connection that has rotted away inside.
- Corroded fixings and stems — rusted screws and seized parts that make even a serviceable light impossible to maintain.
What a Broken Fitting Does to the Rest of the System
A cracked fitting lets water reach its connections, and damp travels. On many garden lighting systems, one wet fitting trips the RCD and darkens the entire garden, so the whole system suffers for one broken part. Corroded connections also worsen quietly between seasons — which is why lighting that "was fine last summer" often fails as soon as the autumn rain arrives. Replacing the broken part promptly, and checking the wiring it sits on, keeps the failure small.
How We Assess the Damage
We check the circuit and its protection first, then work through the fittings one by one: which are broken, which are merely weathered, and which are sound. Each cable run is tested as we go, because breakage and water damage often extend into the connections that are hidden underground or behind walls. On low-voltage systems we verify the transformer still matches the fittings it feeds. You will get a straightforward list — repair, replace, or leave — with a firm price for the work.
How We Fix It
Broken fittings are replaced with quality weatherproof (IP-rated) lights chosen to suit their position: tougher casings where mowers and footballs reach, better sealing where water sits, and materials that tolerate the frost. Connections are remade in properly sealed, weather-rated connectors — never in bare soil. Damaged cable sections are repaired or replaced and routed away from future trouble. Where a fitting was damaged by its position (too close to a path edge, too exposed to the jet of a pressure washer), we will suggest a better spot or better protection as part of the job. The whole system is tested in real conditions before we leave.
Aftercare and Prevention
A few habits extend the life of garden lighting considerably. Trim back growth that holds moisture against fittings, avoid blasting lights with pressure washers, and after mowing or strimming, glance along the light line for fresh damage. If a fitting takes a knock, have it checked before the rain does the rest. And when a lamp needs changing, use the correct type and rating — mismatched lamps overheat holders and seals.
When to Call Us
Book a visit when fittings are cracked, waterlogged, missing or dead, or when the lighting trips the RCD. Urgent booking applies if any fitting is damaged and the circuit is still live, if you can smell burning or see scorching, or if the damage has left wiring exposed — in those cases switch the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and call us straight away.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A broken garden light is easy to spot — a cracked lens, a leaning spike, a fitting full of water or one that simply never comes on. What is less easy to see is what the break has done to the wiring around it. We repair or replace the damaged fittings, check the wiring they sit on, and leave your garden lighting whole again.

Questions people ask about broken garden lights
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I replace a broken garden light myself?
Changing a lamp or a whole plug-in fitting can be straightforward, but anything wired into the lighting circuit — spikes, bollards, wall lights — involves connections that must be sealed and tested. A fitting replaced without proper waterproof connectors often trips the whole system in the next wet spell. If the fitting is cracked or waterlogged, have the wiring checked too.
Why does one broken light take out the whole garden?
Garden lighting usually sits on one RCD-protected circuit, and water reaching the connections inside a cracked fitting leaks current to earth — so the RCD trips and everything goes off together. That is the system protecting you. Replacing the damaged fitting and drying out the circuit restores all of it.
Is a broken outdoor light dangerous?
It can be, particularly if the casing is cracked and the circuit is live: water and fingers can reach parts that should be enclosed. If a fitting is broken, waterlogged, scorching or smells hot, switch the lighting circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book urgently. Otherwise it is a routine job.
What does repair or replacement cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Can you upgrade the fittings while you are here?
Yes — many customers use the repair to replace tired halogen or damaged plastic fittings with more efficient LED lights that cope better with the weather. We can match the existing positions and wiring, check the transformer or circuit has the capacity, and quote for the upgrade alongside the repair.
