Why an Outdoor Socket Stops Working
Outside sockets fail more often than indoor ones, and there are good reasons for that. They are exposed to the weather all year round, and even a well-sealed socket lets a little moisture in over time. Common causes include:
- A tripped RCD or circuit breaker — the protective device at the consumer unit may have cut the supply because of a fault elsewhere on the circuit. If the socket is dead but the breaker has tripped, that trip is a clue, not the whole story.
- Water ingress — a worn or damaged seal lets rain into the socket body. Corrosion then builds up on the terminals until contact is lost.
- Cracked or degraded casing — UV from sunlight and repeated freezing make the plastic brittle. A cracked lid lets water straight in.
- A failed socket unit itself — the internal contacts wear out, especially on sockets that get frequent use with heavy plugs.
- Damage from use — a plug yanked out by a trailing lead, a mower clip or a knock from the bins can all break connections inside.
- Wiring problems — the cable feeding the socket may be damaged by frost heave, rodents, or by being clipped incorrectly along a wall.
What Happens If You Leave It
A dead socket is sometimes just inconvenient, but it can also be the visible sign of a hidden problem. If the socket has stopped working because water has got inside, the same moisture can eventually reach the wiring behind it. Corrosion on terminals heats up under load, and repeated RCD tripping on a wet circuit is not something to ignore. Getting it looked at promptly means the repair stays small.
How We Diagnose the Fault
We start at the consumer unit to confirm the circuit is live and the protective devices are healthy. From there we work outwards: testing the supply at the socket, checking the RCD's response, opening the socket to inspect the terminals, seals and cable entry, and testing the circuit wiring with proper instruments rather than guesswork. If the socket itself is fine, we follow the cable back to find where the supply has been lost. You will be told plainly what we have found and what it will cost to put right before any repair begins.
How We Fix It
The right fix depends on the cause. If the socket is corroded or cracked, we replace it with a suitably weatherproof (IP-rated) unit with good seals and correct cable glands. If the fault is in the wiring, we repair or replace the damaged section and make sure it is protected and supported correctly. If the circuit has been tripping, we find out why and resolve that, rather than simply resetting it and walking away. Every repair is tested under load before we leave, and we check that the RCD still operates as it should as well.
Aftercare and Prevention
A few habits keep an outdoor socket healthy. Keep the lid closed whenever nothing is plugged in, use plugs with good quality trailing leads rather than worn extension reels, and avoid leaving appliances connected through wet weather. If the socket sits somewhere permanently exposed, we can suggest a covered position or an additional weather hood. We will point out anything we noticed that might need attention later, so you can plan rather than react.
When to Call Us
Book a visit if the socket is completely dead, works intermittently, or if the RCD trips whenever anything is plugged in. Also call if you can see cracks in the casing, signs of moisture inside the lid, or scorching around any part of the socket. Those last three are urgent rather than routine.

An outside socket that has suddenly gone dead is frustrating, especially when the lawnmower, hedge trimmer or pressure washer is waiting. Outdoor sockets live a hard life — rain, frost, dust and damp all take their toll. We will trace the fault from the consumer unit to the socket itself, repair or replace what has failed, and leave you with an outside socket you can rely on again.

Questions people ask about outdoor socket not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a dead outdoor socket myself?
Checking whether the breaker or RCD in the consumer unit has tripped is sensible and safe, and resetting it once is reasonable. Beyond that, leave it to us — outdoor sockets involve weatherproof seals and live parts, and a DIY repair that is not weather-tight often causes a bigger fault a few months later. Never open a socket with the power still on.
What will the engineer actually do on the visit?
We check the circuit at the consumer unit first, then test the socket and its wiring with proper instruments. We inspect the socket's seals, terminals and cable entry, and if the socket is not the problem we trace the cable back to find the break. You get a clear diagnosis and a firm price before we start the repair.
Is a dead outdoor socket dangerous?
Usually it is just frustrating, but not always. If the socket went dead after heavy rain, if there is moisture inside the lid, or if the RCD keeps tripping, the fault could involve water reaching live parts. In that case switch it off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and book an urgent visit rather than waiting.
How much does it cost to put right?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Will the replacement socket be suitable for our weather?
Yes. We fit weatherproof (IP-rated) outdoor sockets designed for permanent exposure to UK rain and frost, with proper cable glands so water cannot track down the wiring. We will also show you which parts of the socket to keep closed and dry between uses.
