A slippery pathway is one of those problems people live with for far too long, usually because it grows so gradually that each week's film of green seems barely worse than the last. Then someone slips. Algae, moss and lichen make hard surfaces treacherous when damp — which in the West Midlands is a fair portion of the year — and the fix is about more than a bucket of bleach: it is about why the surface grows a permanent green coat at all. This page explains the causes, the safe way to clean, and the repairs that stop the slip from returning.
Why pathways turn slippery
Green growth needs three things: moisture, shade and a surface it can colonise. A path under trees or beside a shaded wall, one that holds water in dips or lacks fall, or one covered in organic debris — leaves, moss clippings, bird droppings — provides all three. Tarmac and old concrete are particularly hospitable; smooth new surfaces resist better until wear opens their texture. And the slippery film is not always algae: in winter the same conditions produce an invisible-looking biofilm that is even more treacherous than obvious moss, and anything damp and shaded turns to true ice in frost. There is a diagnostic point here: growth concentrated in one area usually means water sits there, and that area will keep regrowing no matter how often it is cleaned until the water situation changes.
How we assess the problem
We look at what is growing, where and how thickly, and read that against the path's layout: shade, overhanging vegetation, and above all where water sits. We check falls and dips, any drainage that should be taking water away, and the surface's condition — because heavily weathered, spalled or cracked surfaces hold moisture in their texture and regrow faster. The assessment ends with two lists: what needs cleaning, and what needs fixing so the cleaning lasts.
Cleaning and treating the surface
Cleaning is done with the right method for the surface: pressure washing with appropriate technique for concrete, slabs and block paving — remembering that jetting block paving strips the jointing sand, which we re-sand afterwards — and gentler methods where the surface or its surroundings demand it, such as near planting or on weathered materials. Treatments to kill remaining spores and slow regrowth are applied where appropriate. We will be straightforward about chemicals: we use products suited to the surface and surroundings, but we do not guarantee chemical treatments — results depend on weather, shade and the surface itself — and where growth is heavy, more than one treatment may be needed. Debris that feeds the problem — leaf fall, overhanging growth — is worth cutting back, and we will point out what would help.
Fixing the conditions
Where our assessment shows water is sitting and feeding the growth, cleaning alone buys you a season. The durable answer is correcting the falls or dips so water drains, clearing or repairing blocked drainage, or re-laying a section that has settled into a puddle — each of which is a repair we quote before starting, with anything larger priced after survey. The combined approach — clean the surface, fix the water — is what turns a path you have to clean twice a year into one that stays clean.
Honest limits and aftercare
Shade and British weather guarantee that some green will return in time, and we do not guarantee a permanently sterile surface. What we do is remove the growth properly, treat the cause of rapid regrowth where we can, and tell you what routine care — sweeping, an occasional clean, keeping drains clear — keeps the path safe. If someone unsteady uses the path, treat recurrence seriously and get it re-cleaned rather than waiting.
Booking
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of cleaning and any repairs is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. When you book, tell us roughly the path's length and surface, whether it is shaded, and whether the slipperiness is everywhere or concentrated in certain spots — the pattern is diagnostic.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A path that has become slick is a genuine risk every single day, especially for anyone less steady on their feet. Our visit establishes what has made it slippery — algae, moss, or a surface that never dries — cleans it properly and deals with the conditions that grew the problem in the first place.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about slippery pathway surface
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clean a slippery path myself?
Yes — sweeping, scrubbing with a suitable patio cleaner and rinsing is a genuine DIY job, and a domestic pressure washer helps on robust surfaces. Two cautions: never use acid or harsh supermarket chemicals on tarmac or weathered concrete, and remember that jetting block paving strips the joint sand. If the slipperiness concentrates in one area, or regrows within weeks of cleaning, water is sitting there and the cause needs assessing, not just the film.
What do you check when a path has become slippery?
We identify what is growing and where, read the pattern against shade and drainage, check falls and dips where water sits, and assess the surface's condition — weathered or cracked surfaces hold moisture and regrow faster. Then we explain what needs cleaning, what needs fixing, and how much each will realistically buy you.
Is a slippery pathway really dangerous?
Yes — it is one of the most common causes of falls at home, and the risk is highest exactly when people are least stable: damp mornings, frosty mornings and after rain. For anyone older or unsteady, a slick path is a priority, not a cosmetic issue. Until it is cleaned, the simple mitigations are a stiff broom, keeping leaves off and taking the wet route slowly.
Will the algae just grow back after cleaning?
Some regrowth is inevitable in shade and British damp — we do not guarantee a permanently sterile surface. But the rate depends on the conditions: a path that drains and gets swept regrows slowly, while one that holds water in a dip regrows in weeks no matter how well it is cleaned. That is why we assess the water situation as part of the visit — fixing it is what makes the cleaning last.
How much does it cost to clean a slippery pathway?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the cleaning and any treatments is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. If the assessment shows dips or drainage faults feeding the growth, those repairs are quoted before we start too, with anything larger priced after survey.
