Block paving is the most repairable driveway surface there is, and that is exactly why it deserves proper repairs: because lifting and relaying blocks is quick, the temptation is to do it superficially — pat a sunken block back into its dip without asking why the dip exists. That approach fails within a season. This page explains how block paving fails, how we repair it so the repair holds, and what maintenance keeps it that way.

How block paving fails

The system depends on three things working together: jointing sand locking the blocks into a single surface, edge restraints holding the field in place, and a compacted base carrying the loads. Failures follow from those. Sand loss — to weather, jet washing, ants and traffic — lets individual blocks move, which pumps out more sand and spreads the looseness. Edge restraint failure lets the boundary blocks creep outward, and the loosening migrates inwards. Bedding or base problems — sand too thin, base poorly compacted or eroded by water — show as sunk and rocking areas at wheel paths and parked positions. Water is the underlying accelerator in all three: it washes sand and fines out through any joint, softens what is below, and freezes open what it has loosened.

How we diagnose

We walk the drive and read the pattern: widespread fine movement says sand; a loose band at the boundary says edges; dips at wheel paths say bedding or base; areas worse after rain say water is washing through. We lift blocks in the worst areas — which takes minutes, not demolition — to inspect bedding and base directly, and check the falls to see where water goes. The diagnosis decides whether you need an afternoon of re-sanding or a structural repair, and we will tell you honestly which it is.

The repairs

Re-sanding: joints cleared and fresh kiln-dried sand brushed in to lock the surface — quick, and often all a tired drive needs. Edge repairs: failed restraints rebuilt — a solid edge course set in concrete or a proper kerb — because relaying blocks against a rotten edge just restarts the creep. Re-laying: sunken or rocking blocks lifted, disturbed bedding removed, base re-levelled and compacted, fresh bedding laid, blocks relaid and re-sanded. Structural repairs: where the base itself has failed over an area, that section is excavated and rebuilt in compacted layers before any blocks go back — and if our assessment shows the failure is widespread, we will say plainly that relaying the field or rebuilding is the economical answer, quoted after survey. Block replacement: cracked or damaged individual blocks are swapped — one of the system's genuine advantages — provided matching or complementary blocks are available, which we will discuss honestly since discontinued patterns sometimes cannot be matched exactly.

What we guarantee and what we don't

We do not guarantee that jointing sand will never need topping up — it is a consumable, especially after jet washing — nor against future weathering or settlement, particularly on drives with soft ground. What we do is fix the structural causes, relay properly, and tell you the annual maintenance — sweep, top up sand, keep drainage clear — that keeps the repair earning its keep.

Costs and booking

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials — sand, blocks, concrete — quoted separately; a full relay or base rebuild is a bigger project quoted after survey. When you book, tell us the area affected, whether blocks move underfoot or under vehicles, and whether it worsens after rain — and mention if you have spare blocks, because matching matters.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

One of the best reasons to choose block paving is that it can be repaired without demolition — blocks lift, the base gets sorted, and the surface goes back together. Our visit diagnoses why yours has failed, repairs it properly, and leaves you with the maintenance knowledge that keeps it sound.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about block paving repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I repair block paving myself?

Re-sanding joints and swapping a single cracked block are genuine DIY jobs, and we will confirm if that is all your drive needs. Lifting and re-laying sunken blocks is achievable with the right tools — but only if the bedding beneath is sound, and judging that is the hard part. If the same area has been re-patted before and sunk again, or blocks rock under vehicles, the base or edges need attention first — worth an assessment before buying materials.

What do you check on a block paving repair visit?

We map where blocks rock, sink or have spread, check the jointing sand and the edge restraints, lift sample blocks to inspect bedding and base directly, and trace how water drains across and through the surface. Then we explain which cause you have — sand, edges, bedding, base or water — and what repair that honestly calls for.

Is loose block paving dangerous?

Rocking blocks are a trip hazard, the dips they form collect water and ice, and loose blocks let water flood the bedding and accelerate sinking across a wider area — plus a sunken grate-level edge can catch wheels. It is not an emergency, but we would not leave it for years: the repair grows with the neglect, block by block.

Can you match my existing blocks if some need replacing?

Sometimes — it depends on whether your block type and colour is still manufactured, and whether you have spares. If the pattern is discontinued, we will discuss the honest options: sourcing reclaimed matching blocks, replacing a bounded area in a complementary colour as a deliberate feature, or relaying blocks from a discreet area of the drive into the damaged one. We will tell you what is achievable rather than promise a perfect invisible match.

How much does block paving repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with materials — sand, blocks, concrete — quoted separately. Re-sanding is a small job; a structural base repair or full relay is bigger, and that is quoted after survey of the area rather than estimated.
