A new driveway is a civil engineering project disguised as a home improvement. The visible surface — tarmac, blocks, concrete, gravel — is the smallest part of what you are paying for; what decides whether it lasts is the excavation, the subbase, the edge restraints and the falls. This page walks you through how we approach a new driveway installation, what the survey covers, and what you should expect at each stage.
Starting with a survey
Every driveway we quote starts with a survey, because every driveway starts on different ground. We look at the soil and how it behaves — heavy clay that shrinks and swells with the seasons needs different treatment from free-draining ground. We measure the area, the levels and the falls available, and work out where rainwater will go — which is the question that shapes everything else. We check access for machinery and deliveries, what services run beneath or near the area, and what exists there now: an old drive to break out, a garden to dig, tree roots to consider. The survey is also where we talk through materials honestly — block paving versus tarmac versus gravel versus concrete have genuinely different costs, looks, maintenance and drainage behaviour, and the right choice depends on your ground, your vehicles, your budget and how you want the front of the house to look. We will give you the trade-offs rather than sell you one answer.
Permissions and responsibilities — yours to sort
Some driveway work can affect drainage permissions: paving that sends rainwater onto the highway or changes where water discharges may fall under rules that apply to your property, and if your home is in a conservation area or you are dropping a kerb for vehicle access, permissions and approvals are involved. We will flag what we can see and help you understand the questions, but planning, permissions and compliance status are the customer's responsibility — we do not promise compliance status on anyone's behalf, and we would rather you had that clarity before the digger arrives.
How the work is built
The honest sequence, whatever the surface: mark out and set levels; excavate to the depth the ground and use demand; install edge restraints set in concrete, because nothing kills a driveway faster than edges with nothing holding them; lay and compact the subbase in layers — properly compacted, in the right depth for cars versus vans versus occasional heavy vehicles; add the bedding or binder layers the chosen surface needs; lay the surface with correct falls to drainage points; and finish joints, sand, sealers or aggregates as the material requires. Underground services are a constant consideration: we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees exactly what lies below, so utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the responsibilities we set out with you before excavation starts.
Weather and timing
Driveway work is weather-dependent: excavation in a storm makes mud of the ground, and surfacing materials have temperature and moisture requirements we will not work around. We schedule sensibly, tell you plainly when weather must delay work, and stage the project so the site is never left in a dangerous or vulnerable state overnight.
What we guarantee and what we don't
We do not guarantee against settlement, weathering or future blockage — ground moves, frost works, and trees grow, and no honest contractor promises otherwise. What we do promise is a build to the right depths and compaction for your ground and vehicles, falls that actually drain, materials as quoted, and a staged project where you approve the full cost before we start and know what is happening at each checkpoint.
Costs and booking
The full cost of the installation is quoted after the survey and approved by you before work starts, with materials quoted separately. The estimate attached to this job covers a defined working day on an agreed scope — larger installations are multi-day projects staged with clear checkpoints, and the survey is what turns 'a driveway' into a price. When you enquire, tell us the rough area, what is there now, the surface you are considering and any access constraints; we will arrange the survey and take it from there.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.
We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A new driveway is one of the bigger investments in your home's exterior, and the difference between one that lasts decades and one that fails in five winters is almost always in what you cannot see: the ground preparation, the subbase and the falls. We start with a proper survey and a quote you approve before anything is dug.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about driveway installation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I install a driveway myself?
Digging and moving hardcore is within DIY reach, but a driveway that lasts needs correct subbase depths and compaction, edge restraints set in concrete, falls engineered for drainage and surfacing materials laid within their working conditions — and it needs the ground and services assessed before digging. DIY driveways most often fail at the base and the edges, which are invisible until they fail. At minimum, have the ground and drainage assessed before you commit.
What does your driveway survey cover?
Ground and soil behaviour, levels and achievable falls, where rainwater will discharge, access for machinery, existing surfaces to remove, tree roots, and services beneath or near the area. It is also where we compare materials honestly — block paving, tarmac, gravel and concrete behave differently in cost, looks, maintenance and drainage — so the quote reflects choices you have actually made, not defaults.
Do I need permission for a new driveway?
Sometimes — drainage rules can apply depending on where rainwater discharges, kerb drops need approvals, and conservation areas have their own requirements. We will flag what we can see and help you understand the questions, but planning, permissions and compliance are the customer's responsibility and we do not promise compliance status. It is worth sorting before work starts rather than after.
How long does a new driveway take?
It depends on the area, what is being removed, the ground and the surface chosen — which is why we quote after survey rather than guess. What we can tell you is that it will be staged with clear checkpoints, that weather will decide some of the timing because excavation and surfacing need suitable conditions, and that we will tell you plainly when weather must delay work.
How much does a new driveway cost?
The full cost is quoted after the survey and approved before work starts, with materials quoted separately — there is no honest single figure because the ground, area and material choice change the scope completely. The estimate attached to this job covers a defined working day on an agreed scope, and the survey is what turns your plans into a firm price. You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit.
