Extractor fans are the forgotten appliance: nobody cleans them until they fail. By the time someone notices, the impeller can be matted with dust or lined with grease, the casing choked, the backdraught flap sticky, and the first section of duct coated. The results are predictable – weak extraction, more noise, a motor running hotter – and in kitchens, a combustible grease load that's worth removing for safety as much as performance.

What build-up actually does

Dust and fluff on impeller blades unbalance them and stop them gripping air, so extraction falls while noise rises. Grease in a kitchen fan acts as glue, catching every passing particle until the impeller is effectively coated. Build-up on the motor insulates it, so it runs hotter – and a hot motor ages faster and, in the worst case with heavy grease loading, presents a fire risk. A sticky backdraught flap fails to open fully, choking the outlet. None of this happens overnight, which is why the decline is easy to miss until the mirror stops clearing or the kitchen stays smelly.

What you can safely do yourself

With the fan off at the isolator, you can wipe the outer cover and grille and clear visible fluff – worthwhile and safe. Don't remove the fan body from its mountings or reach into the impeller: live connections sit behind the cover, the impeller is a moving part even when switched off at the wall (isolators can be mis-set), and forcing a stuck impeller can damage the motor. A proper clean involves removing the cover, degreasing the impeller and casing with appropriate products, freeing the flap, and clearing the accessible duct – with the fan correctly isolated and verified dead first.

How we clean

Our engineer isolates the fan properly, removes the cover and accesses the impeller, and degreases or de-dusts the impeller, casing and motor housing using products appropriate to the location – kitchen grease needs degreaser; bathroom dust and lint need different treatment. We free or clean the backdraught flap, clear the accessible first section of duct and the external grille, and reassemble securely. While the fan is open we also check the motor's condition, the mountings and the connections – a clean is the natural moment to spot early wear.

What cleaning achieves and what it can't

A well-fouled fan often comes back to near-new performance – the difference surprises people. Noise drops, extraction recovers, and the motor runs cooler. What cleaning can't do is cure a worn motor, a failed control module, an undersized fan or a badly designed duct. If we find those during the clean, we'll tell you plainly and quote any further work separately rather than implying a clean has fixed everything.

How often to book a clean

Kitchens need cleaning more often than bathrooms because grease accumulates faster – and a kitchen clean is as much a fire-safety job as a performance one. If extraction has visibly dropped or noise has crept up, it's due. Regular cleaning also extends the fan's life by keeping the motor cool.

Between professional cleans

A light monthly routine keeps the decline slow: wipe the outer cover and grille with the fan off at the isolator, and check the external grille from ground level if you can reach it safely. That doesn't replace a proper internal clean, but it stretches the interval between them and keeps performance from collapsing unnoticed.

Booking your clean

Contact Maintenance Men with the room, roughly how long since the fan was last cleaned, and whether it's showing symptoms – weak extraction, noise, smell. Same-day visits may be available. We'll clean it properly and quote any additional findings separately for your approval.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A fan caked with dust or grease loses extraction steadily, runs hotter and noisier, and in kitchens becomes a genuine fire load. A proper professional clean restores performance and removes that risk – done with the unit correctly isolated, not with a duster waved at the cover.

Questions people ask about dirty extractor fan cleaning required

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just clean the fan cover myself?

Yes – with the fan switched off at the isolator, wiping the cover and grille and clearing visible fluff is safe and worthwhile. Stop there: removing the fan body or reaching into the impeller risks contact with live connections and moving parts, and a proper internal clean needs the unit verified dead and correctly accessed.

Is a dirty kitchen fan really a fire risk?

Heavy grease build-up is combustible, and a choked impeller makes the motor work harder and run hotter – so a badly fouled kitchen fan combines fuel with heat. It's a maintenance-level concern rather than an emergency, but worth cleaning promptly. If you ever notice smoke or a burning smell, switch the fan off at the isolator and get it checked urgently; call 999 if there are flames.

How much difference does a clean actually make?

On a well-fouled fan, often a dramatic one – extraction and noise both improve noticeably, and the motor runs cooler, which extends its life. We'll be honest if the fan's performance was already limited by size or duct design, since a clean can only restore what the system allows.

Do you check anything else while the fan is open?

Yes – the clean is the natural opportunity to check the motor's condition, mountings, connections and flap, and to spot early wear before it becomes a failure. Anything we find beyond the clean is explained and quoted separately, with nothing done until you approve.

What does a professional fan clean cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. A clean is generally one of the quicker fan jobs, and the full cost including any materials is quoted for your approval before work starts – parts or repairs found during the clean are quoted separately.
