Loose fence panels announce themselves with a rattle on breezy days, and it is easy to ignore for a season. It is worth not ignoring: a panel that is flapping is being flexed thousands of times, and flexing is what breaks frames and works fixings through to failure. Dealt with early, loose panels are a small job.

Why Panels Come Loose

Rusted fixings are the usual culprit — panel clips and nails corrode, lose grip, and let the panel start to move. Movement begets movement: once a panel can shift a millimetre, every gust works it further. Loose panels can also be a symptom of something else: a post that has begun to move changes the geometry of the run, and panels that no longer sit square work their fixings loose. Timber shrinkage plays a part too — a panel nailed tight in summer can sit proud of its fixings by winter as boards shrink and holes widen. And sometimes panels were never fixed well in the first place, sitting in brackets rather than being secured.

How We Assess the Run

We check each loose panel and its fixings, and importantly the posts either side — because refitting panels to a moving post is a job you will be paying for twice. We look at whether the panel itself is sound or has started to split at the fixings, and whether the gravel board beneath is still doing its job. Panels and posts are assessed as separate items so the quote only covers what has failed. Everything is explained plainly, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.

Refitting and Fixing

Sound panels get refitted with fixings that actually grip — properly sized screws or clips, set into sound timber, in positions that hold both edges. Where the original fixing holes have enlarged or the timber has softened, we move fixings to fresh timber or use fixings designed for the situation rather than re-tightening screws that will pull out again by spring. Where a panel has started to split at its frame joints, we will say so honestly: sometimes a panel at that stage is better replaced than re-secured, because the next storm will finish what the rattle started. If a post behind a loose panel has started moving, we will tell you and quote that as its own job.

The Storm Connection

Loose panels are disproportionately where storm damage begins — wind gets under a flapping panel and finds leverage. Tightening the run before autumn is one of the cheapest ways to avoid a fallen fence in November. If you know a windy season is coming and panels are rattling, booking ahead is genuinely worthwhile.

Aftercare

Once a year, walk the run on a breezy day and listen; rattles are early warnings you can hear for free. Check fixings each spring, and keep timber treated so the timber around the fixings stays dense enough to grip.

When to Call Us

Call when panels rattle, flap or visibly shift in wind, when fixings have dropped out, or when a panel has begun to split at its edges. When booking, tell us how many panels are affected and whether the posts are timber or concrete, and mention anything you have noticed about the posts moving.

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and fixings or replacement panels are quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A panel that rattles or flaps in the wind is a panel waiting to break, and loose panels are far cheaper to deal with than fallen ones. Our visit covers refitting what has come loose, checking why it loosened, and confirming the posts behind are still doing their job.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about loose fence panels

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I refit loose fence panels myself?

Yes — tightening or replacing clips and screws on a sound panel is realistic DIY, provided the posts are sound. The trap is re-tightening fixings into enlarged or softened holes, which simply pull out again. If the panel has started splitting at the frame or a post is moving, that changes the job, so an assessment first is worthwhile.

What do you check when panels are loose?

The panels and their fixings, whether the panel frames are still sound, the posts either side for movement, and the gravel boards below. We are looking for why the fixings let go, not just tightening what is there — a moving post or a splitting panel needs a different answer.

How urgent is a loose panel really?

Loose panels are where storm failures start: wind gets under a flapping panel and tears it free, often taking its neighbours with it. It is not an emergency on a calm day, but it is a small job now versus a bigger job after the next storm. Before autumn is the ideal time to deal with them.

Will you replace the panels or just refit them?

Whichever is the honest answer. A sound panel with tired fixings is refitted with proper hardware; a panel splitting at its frame joints is better replaced, because re-securing it only postpones failure. We will show you what we found and you decide before any work is quoted as approved.

How is this priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and fixings or replacement panels are quoted separately from labour. Nothing proceeds until you have approved the price.
