Fences rarely fall over all at once; they drift. A post leans a little, the panels follow, and over a few seasons the whole run reads visibly crooked. Realignment is the job of putting it back — properly, on footings that hold, rather than levering panels upright and hoping.
Why Fence Runs Drift
Ground movement is the main cause: clay that shrinks in dry summers and swells in wet winters works posts loose year by year. Posts rotted through at ground level lose stiffness and lean under wind load. Water is an accomplice — a run whose bases sit in persistently wet ground drifts far faster than one on free-draining soil. External forces play their part too: tree roots pushing from one side, a vehicle strike, or soil and paving built up against the fence burying the post bases deeper into damp ground. Understanding which cause applies to your run matters, because realigning a fence on the same wet, soft ground without addressing it means the drift simply resumes.
How We Assess the Drift
We walk the run and check every post at ground level — probing for softness, testing for movement in the socket — and establish which posts have moved and which are merely following. We look at drainage, at anything pressing on the fence, and at the panels themselves, since sound panels can be re-hung on re-set posts while panels at the end of their life should be dealt with while the posts are out anyway. Posts and panels are assessed separately so the quote covers only what needs work. Everything is explained in plain terms, and the full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with parts quoted separately from labour.
The Realignment Work
Moved-but-sound posts are re-set: eased out, the socket renewed with fresh mix and compaction, the post set plumb, and the panels temporarily supported while it cures. Failed posts are replaced rather than straightened — a rotted post will not hold plumb however carefully it is set. The run is re-lined as a whole, so the boundary reads straight end to end rather than in corrected segments. Re-setting posts means digging, and boundary lines are where buried pipes, cables and drains commonly run. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below; utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the process, and providing the plans is the customer's responsibility.
Addressing the Cause
Where drift came from wet ground, we will talk about what can be done — improving drainage at the post bases, keeping soil banks off the timber. Where tree roots or repeated knocks are the cause, we will say what realistically can and cannot be fixed. A realignment should end the drift, not restart the clock on it, and we will be honest about which is achievable on your ground.
Weather and Aftercare
Re-setting posts needs workable ground and calm conditions, and we schedule sensibly, telling you plainly when weather must delay a stage. Afterwards, keep planting and soil off the timber, and check the run after the first big storm — early movement is a two-minute correction.
When to Call Us
Call when the fence has drifted visibly out of line, when individual posts lean, or when a run that was straight now reads crooked. Tell us roughly the run's length and whether posts are timber or concrete when you book.
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about fence realignment
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I realign a fence myself?
Re-firming a single loose post is possible for a confident DIYer with help to hold things plumb. Realigning a whole run is a different matter: several posts to re-set, panels to support while mixes cure, and digging along a boundary where services may be buried. If the drift has a cause — wet ground, roots — DIY realignment without addressing it will drift again.
What do you check when a fence has drifted?
Every post at ground level to find which have actually moved, the ground and drainage around the bases, anything pressing on the fence such as roots or built-up soil, and the panels themselves. Posts and panels are assessed separately, so the quote covers only the work that is genuinely needed.
Will the fence stay straight after realignment?
It does when the cause is dealt with. Posts re-set in sound, well-compacted ground with drainage improved will hold the line for years; posts straightened on the same soft, wet ground that caused the drift will lean again. We will tell you honestly which posts can be re-set, which need replacing, and what the ground will allow.
What about the buried services along my boundary?
Boundary lines commonly carry pipes, cables and drains, so we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate before digging — but no scan guarantees what is below. That is why we ask for your utilities' plans to be available as part of a safe dig approach; providing them is the customer's responsibility, and we adjust post positions rather than dig into the unknown.
How is fence realignment priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts such as posts, mixes and panels are quoted separately from labour. Longer runs are surveyed and quoted as a project first.
