Fence post problems are easy to underestimate, because the damage usually starts underground or at ground level where you cannot see it. By the time a post is visibly leaning, the failure has often been developing for a couple of seasons. Dealing with posts early is the cheapest fence maintenance you will ever do.
How Posts Fail
Timber posts rot where they meet the ground — moisture sits in that zone, the timber cycles between wet and dry, and fungus does the rest. A post can look healthy at eye level while being pencil-soft two feet down. Concrete posts fail differently: they crack, or the panel clips rust through, or frost and movement split the base. Ground conditions matter too. Posts set in clay that shrinks and swells, or in ground that gets waterlogged every winter, work loose over time. And wind does the rest: a fence is a sail, and every gust loads the posts sideways, which is exactly the direction timber is weakest.
How We Assess a Damaged Post
We check each post at and below ground level, probing for softness, looking for cracking and testing for movement in the socket. It is worth being clear that the post and the panel are separate problems: a post can be failing while every panel on the run is fine, and a panel can be broken while the posts are sound. We treat them separately so you are not paying to replace things that still have years in them. Where the ground around a post is waterlogged or a boundary sits on a slope, we will factor that into the recommendation. Everything is explained in plain terms and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
Repair and Replacement Options
A post that is sound above ground but weak at the base can often be saved with a repair spur — a concrete or steel brace bolted alongside, taking the load off the rotten section. That avoids digging out the old post and disturbing the panels either side. A post that has failed badly needs replacing, which means digging out the old stump and setting a new post in fresh mix. That involves digging, and digging near a boundary means thinking about what is buried: water pipes, cables and drains often run close to fence lines. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, so we ask you to have your utilities' plans available as part of a safe dig approach — that is the customer's responsibility to provide, and we will not guess.
Weather and Working Sensibly
Setting posts needs weather on your side: ground that is not waterlogged, temperatures that let concrete cure, and no wind that makes handling tall posts risky. We schedule for suitable conditions and will say plainly when weather must delay the work rather than press on regardless.
Aftercare
New posts benefit from a cap or a sloped top so water does not sit on the end grain. Once a year, walk the run and check for movement after big storms — catching a post when it starts to rock costs far less than catching it when it takes three panels down with it.
When to Call Us
Call when a post is leaning, rocking at the base, or visibly soft or cracked at ground level, or when panels along a run are flexing more than they should. When booking, tell us how many posts seem affected, whether they are timber or concrete, and whether you know what services run along the boundary. We will take it from there.
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately.
How the price works

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about damaged fence posts
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair a fence post myself?
A wobbly post can sometimes be re-firmed with fresh mix, and fitting a repair spur is within reach of a confident DIYer with the right tools. The difficulty is judging how much of the post is actually sound below ground — and digging near boundary lines without knowing what services are buried. If in doubt, an assessment first is the cheaper route.
What do you check when assessing posts?
Each post at and below ground level, where timber rot and concrete cracking begin; movement in the socket; the ground conditions around the base; and the fixings holding the panels. We assess posts and panels as separate items so you only pay for what has actually failed.
Is digging for a new post something to worry about?
Boundary lines often carry pipes, cables and drains, so digging without knowing what is below is a real risk. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is underneath. We ask customers to have their utilities' plans available — that is part of a safe dig approach and it sits with the customer to provide them.
Will a repair spur work on my post, or does it need replacing?
It depends on where the post has failed and how badly. A spur suits a post that is sound above ground with damage concentrated at the base; a post cracked through or soft along most of its length is better replaced. We will show you what we have found and explain which option makes sense before you commit.
How much will post repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts — spurs, posts, post mix, fixings — are quoted separately. Nothing is done until you have approved the price.
