Intermittent Heating? We'll Track Down Why It Comes and Goes in Coventry
We diagnose heating that works one day and fails the next — controls, valves, pumps, pressure and connections — and repair the water-side and electrical faults we find.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

Why Heating Behaves Intermittently
Faults that come and go are rarely random — they follow patterns, and those patterns are the best diagnostic tool available. Common causes include:
- Thermal faults — a component that fails only when hot. PCBs, sensors and motorised valve actuators can all work when cold and cut out as the system warms, which is why the heating often dies part-way through a run.
- Sticking valves and pumps — a diverter valve that occasionally sticks in the wrong position, or a pump whose bearings are on the way out, produces heating that works on some cycles and not others.
- Dropping pressure — a sealed system with a small leak holds pressure for days, then crosses the lockout threshold. The heating then cuts out until someone repressurises it, and the cycle repeats.
- Control and wiring faults — loose connections, a thermostat with failing batteries, or corroded terminals can interrupt the call for heat unpredictably, especially where cables run through cold lofts or damp areas.
- Air in the system — trapped air shifts around as the system heats and cools, so radiators work after bleeding and go cold again days later.
- Overheat cut-outs — restricted circulation from sludge or a partially blocked plate exchanger can trip a boiler's overheat protection, shutting it down until it cools, then letting it run again.
Why Intermittent Faults Worsen
The patterns tend to shorten. A valve that sticks once a month starts sticking weekly; a thermal cut-out that trips occasionally trips on every run. Meanwhile a system repeatedly losing pressure has a leak that is weeping water into somewhere it should not be, and a boiler cycling on overheat protection is being stressed each time. Diagnosing an intermittent fault early is easier than diagnosing it later, simply because the failure is less entrenched.
How We Approach an Intermittent Fault
We start with your observations, because they matter enormously: does it fail when cold or hot, on heating only or hot water too, at particular times of day? We then check the pressure history and look for the leak that a dropping gauge usually implies, inspect radiator bleed points and pipework for air, and test the thermostat, programmer and wiring for solid connections. Where a valve or pump is suspect we exercise it repeatedly and monitor its behaviour, and we check whether the boiler is tripping on overheat — which points to restricted circulation rather than the boiler itself. The visit may not always reproduce the fault while we are there, but a systematic elimination usually narrows it to one component or one section of the system.
Repairs Within Our Scope
We repair the water-side and electrical causes of intermittent heating; we are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work. That includes replacing failing pumps and motorised valve actuators, repairing thermostat and control wiring, repressurising systems after locating and fixing leaks, bleeding and balancing radiators, and power-flushing systems choked with sludge that restrict circulation. Where a boiler sensor or PCB is implicated and accessible, we can replace it. We do not carry out gas work — if the diagnosis points to the burner, gas valve or ignition, we explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with.
Keeping Notes That Help
With faults that come and go, a week of simple notes is worth more than a guess. Note the time the heating dropped out, whether the pressure gauge had fallen, whether any error code showed, and whether the hot water was affected too. Photograph the gauge and display if you can. Bring those notes to our visit and we can often go straight to the likely component rather than testing everything in turn — which saves you time and money.
Booking and What to Tell Us
Get in touch with your boiler's make, model and age, whether it is a combi or a system with a cylinder, and the pattern you have noticed. Same-day attendance may be possible but is never guaranteed. We work across the West Midlands, quote the full cost before starting any repair, and will not leave until either the fault is fixed or you know exactly what the next step is — including a Gas Safe referral where the evidence demands one.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Booked 14+ days ahead
£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Heating that behaves itself all morning and then vanishes by the evening is one of the most frustrating faults there is. Intermittent problems usually have a logical cause — a connection that breaks down as components warm up, a valve that sticks occasionally, or pressure that drifts. We will methodically narrow it down, repair what we find on the water and electrical side, and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer if the evidence points into the gas side of the boiler.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about intermittent heating
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why does my heating work in the morning but not in the evening?
Patterns like that usually mean a component is heat-sensitive — a valve actuator, PCB or sensor that cuts out once warm — or that the system is losing pressure through the day until it hits the lockout point. Telling us the pattern in detail is the single most useful thing you can do to speed up diagnosis.
Should I keep repressurising the boiler when it cuts out?
Topping up once to restore heating is reasonable, but repeatedly repressurising a system that keeps losing pressure is masking a leak that will be weeping somewhere it can do damage. We would much rather find and fix the leak so the system holds pressure on its own.
What can I safely try myself?
Check thermostat batteries and settings, note the pressure gauge reading when the fault occurs, and bleed a radiator that is cold at the top with the system off and cool. Do not open the boiler casing, adjust anything inside it, or attempt any work involving gas components — those are strictly for qualified engineers.
What if the fault does not happen during your visit?
That happens with intermittent faults, and it is not a dead end. We test systematically to eliminate the controls, pressure, valves, pump and wiring, and often identify the component whose behaviour matches your pattern. If the evidence points into the boiler's gas side we explain our findings and refer you to a Gas Safe registered engineer we trust.
What does an intermittent heating fault cost to put right?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the diagnosis and repair is quoted and approved by you before we start. If parts are needed they are identified and quoted separately, with no obligation to proceed.
