The Electrical Side of a Boiler

Behind the front panel of every boiler is a substantial electrical system, and when it misbehaves the heating stops just as surely as if the gas side failed. The components most often at fault are:

  • The supply and isolation — a blown fuse in the fused spur, a tripped MCB or RCD at the consumer unit, or a loose connection in the isolation switch cuts everything at once.
  • The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) — the boiler's brain. Boards fail with age, heat cycling and damp, producing dead displays, random lockouts and faults that appear and vanish.
  • Sensors and thermistors — these report water temperature and flow to the PCB. A failed thermistor can send impossible readings that lock the boiler out.
  • Pump electrics — a pump that draws too much current or has a failing winding can trip protection or stall the heating.
  • Control wiring — the cable from thermostat and programmer to the boiler, and the connections at both ends. Corroded or loose terminals cause faults that come and go.
  • Ignition and fan wiring — these circuits sit close to gas-side components; faults here are diagnosed within safe limits and may need referral.

Symptoms That Point Electrical

A boiler completely dead with no display usually means supply. A display that works but the boiler will not run suggests controls or PCB. Breakers that trip whenever the heating runs point to a current leak — often a pump winding or water where it should not be. Faults that appear when the boiler warms up, or that reset when it cools, are classic failing-electronics behaviour. An RCD that trips only when hot water is drawn can indicate a plate heat exchanger leaking onto electrics inside the case. Recognising these patterns is what makes an electrical boiler diagnosis quick.

Safety First

Water and electricity share the boiler casing, so never spray or pour anything into or near a boiler, and never open the casing. If the boiler has been leaking and the electrics are damp, isolate it at the consumer unit if you can do so safely and leave it off until inspected. Resetting a tripped RCD once is reasonable; repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping is not — each trip is a fault announcing itself, and forcing it back invites a worse failure.

How We Test the Electrical Side

We work from the supply inwards: confirming the fused spur and consumer unit are healthy, checking the isolation switch and its connections, then testing voltages and continuity into the boiler as far as is safely accessible without breaching the gas side. We test the pump's current draw, check sensor readings against known values, and inspect the PCB and connections for heat damage, corrosion and moisture. Electrical diagnosis with proper instruments distinguishes a failing board from a failing sensor — two faults with very different repair costs — before anything is ordered.

Repairs We Can Complete

We repair or replace fuses, isolation switches and supply wiring faults, replace pumps and motors, replace failed sensors and thermistors, repair corroded or damaged control wiring, and replace PCBs where diagnosis confirms them — always matching the exact board to your boiler's make and model and quoting the part separately. We also find and fix the water leak that caused damp electrics, because replacing a damaged board without fixing the leak is a repair that repeats. Components and circuits on the gas side — ignition electrodes, gas valve wiring and the like — are referred to one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with, with our findings written up so nothing is repeated.

Protecting the Board Afterwards

After any electrical boiler repair we check the earthing and protective devices, confirm the boiler runs through a full heating cycle, and advise on moisture sources if damp played a part. In older installations we may recommend a device to protect the PCB from supply surges, which are a known board-killer.

Booking an Electrical Diagnosis

Tell us your boiler's make and model, exactly what happens — dead display, tripped breaker, error code — and whether anything changed before the fault began. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Parts, especially PCBs, are quoted separately before ordering. We cover the West Midlands.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Boilers are electrical machines as well as heating appliances, and a surprising share of boiler faults — dead displays, tripped breakers, intermittent lockouts — are electrical rather than gas. We test the boiler's electrical supply, controls, sensors and boards with proper instruments, repair the electrical and water-side faults we find, and refer anything gas-side to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service

5 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.

Job: No Heating from Boiler

Turned up when they said

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Expansion Vessel Fault

Exactly what was quoted

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about boiler electrical fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

My boiler has no display at all — what should I check?

Check the fused spur switch near the boiler is on and its fuse is intact, and look at the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD. If a breaker has tripped, reset it once — if it trips again, stop and call us, because something on the circuit is faulty. Never open the boiler casing to investigate.

Can you replace a boiler PCB?

Yes, where diagnosis confirms the board and it is an electrical component we can access lawfully. PCBs are expensive parts, so we always verify the fault with proper testing first — sometimes a failed sensor or wiring fault is mimicking a board failure at a fraction of the cost. The replacement board is quoted separately and matched to your exact model.

Why does my consumer unit trip only when the heating runs?

That points to a current leak on a component that runs with the heating — most often the pump's windings, or water reaching electrics from a leak inside the system. It is a fault to take seriously; do not keep resetting the breaker. We test the pump and trace the leak before any replacement.

What happens if the electrical fault turns out to involve gas components?

We are not Gas Safe registered and never carry out gas work. If our diagnosis points to circuits and components on the gas side, we explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, with a written summary of what we tested and found so their visit starts ahead.

How much does an electrical boiler repair cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the diagnosis and repair is quoted and approved before we start. Parts are identified and quoted separately — important with PCBs, which vary widely in price between models.
