A blank, frozen or scrambled boiler display is often an electrical or supply fault — we trace it, repair our side, and refer anything gas-side to a Gas Safe engineer.

Why Displays Fail
A boiler display is driven by the same electronics that run the boiler, so display faults range from harmless to significant:
- Supply problems — a blown fuse in the fused spur, a tripped breaker, or a loose connection in the isolation switch leaves the display blank while the boiler itself is fine. This is the first thing to check and the most common answer.
- Display or interface failure — the display module itself can fail independently, leaving the boiler running but silent. Some models have replaceable display modules; others integrate the display with the PCB.
- PCB faults — the board behind the display often drives it. A board on the way out produces scrambled characters, frozen readings or displays that fail only when the boiler warms up.
- Moisture ingress — a leak inside the casing, or condensation on a cold boiler in a damp cupboard, can fog or kill a display — and moisture near electrics always deserves investigation.
- Connection faults — ribbon cables and connectors between display and board work loose with vibration and thermal cycling, giving intermittent or half-lit displays.
Why a Dead Display Deserves Attention
It is tempting to run the boiler blind, and some people do for weeks. But the display is also where lockout codes appear — and a boiler locking out repeatedly with no way to see why is a boiler whose fault is going unnoticed. Moisture-related display failures matter most: damp that reached the display has usually reached other electronics too, and catching it early can save the PCB. Even a purely cosmetic display failure is worth fixing for the pressure reading alone, since pressure is the one thing you should be able to monitor between visits.
What You Can Check First
Confirm the boiler's fused spur switch is on and try a replacement fuse if the switch has one, and check the consumer unit for tripped devices. Look at the boiler's pressure gauge — many have a mechanical gauge independent of the display, which tells you the system is pressurised even with a dead screen. Note anything odd: does the boiler still heat, does it lock out, did the display fail after a leak or after very cold weather? Do not open the boiler casing to reach the display or the board behind it — leave that to us.
How We Narrow Down a Dead Display
We start with the supply and its connections, then establish whether the boiler's electronics are alive behind the dead screen — the boiler responding to controls but showing nothing points to a display or connection fault, while a boiler that is entirely unresponsive points deeper. We test voltages and the display's connections, inspect for moisture and corrosion, and distinguish a failed display module from a failing PCB. Where the fault involves circuits close to gas-side components, we diagnose only within safe limits and stop before anything gas-related.
Repairs That Bring the Display Back
We repair supply and fused spur faults, reseat or replace display connections, replace display modules where the model allows separate replacement, and replace PCBs where diagnosis confirms them — quoting the exact board for your make and model separately before ordering. Where moisture caused the failure, we find and repair the leak or condensation source first, because a new board in a damp casing is a board that fails again. Gas-side components are never touched by us; where they are implicated we refer you to one of the trusted Gas Safe registered engineers we work closely with.
Getting a Visit Booked
Tell us your boiler's make and model, whether the boiler still heats, and whether the display died after anything notable — a leak, cold weather, or a power cut. Same-day visits may be available but are never promised. A booking fee is paid when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Parts such as display modules and PCBs are quoted separately. We cover the West Midlands.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The display is your window into the boiler, and when it goes blank, freezes or shows gibberish, you lose the pressure reading, the error codes and the reassurance that the boiler is doing anything at all. Sometimes it is trivial; sometimes it announces a failing board or a damp problem worth catching early. We will diagnose which it is, repair the electrical and water-side causes, and refer anything on the gas side to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about boiler display not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
The display is blank but the radiators heat — is that serious?
It is usually a display module or supply fault rather than a heating fault, and the boiler is often fine. It is still worth repairing promptly, though, because the display is where error codes and lockout information appear — running blind hides any fault that develops next.
Can I replace a boiler display myself?
No — the display sits inside the casing alongside live electrics and gas-side components, and opening the casing is not something a homeowner should do. Supply-side checks outside the boiler, like the fused spur and consumer unit, are sensible; everything inside is a job for a qualified engineer.
Could a blank display mean the PCB has failed?
It can, which is why we test properly rather than guessing. A board failure often shows other symptoms too — the boiler not responding to controls, random lockouts or a display that fails when warm. Proper electrical diagnosis separates a display fault from a board fault before you commit to an expensive part.
What if the fault involves the gas side of the boiler?
We never carry out gas work and are not Gas Safe registered. If our diagnosis points to gas-side circuits or components, we explain our findings and refer you to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer we work closely with, along with a written summary of what we tested so no work is duplicated.
How will this be priced?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of diagnosis and repair is quoted and approved before work begins. Display modules and PCBs vary a lot in price between boiler models, so parts are always identified and quoted separately.
