Why shelves come loose in the first place
A shelf rarely fails at random. The common causes are familiar: light-duty plugs used in a wall that needed something stronger; fixings driven into plasterboard where there was nothing solid behind; a hole drilled slightly oversized so the plug spins instead of gripping; or simply years of books slowly working the fixing loose. Sometimes the wall itself is the culprit — old plaster can crumble around a fixing point long before the shelf shows any movement. Working out which of these you have is the difference between a shelf that stays up and one that is back on the floor in a month.
What we look at first
We start by taking the load off and examining the scene properly: how the shelf is fixed, what state the wall around each fixing point is in, whether the plugs are gripping anything at all, and whether the shelf or bracket itself has cracked. A shelf that has been hanging by one screw tells a different story from one whose two plugs have both spun in oversize holes. This inspection decides the repair, so we do not skip it.
Re-fixing it properly
The fix depends on the diagnosis. Where the original position is sound, we simply replace the failed fixings with ones matched to the wall and the load — heavier plugs, cavity anchors for plasterboard, or extra fixing points spread across the bracket. Where the original holes are beyond reuse, we move the fixing points a few centimetres to sound ground and make good the old holes as part of the visit. Where the wall has crumbled, small local damage can be filled and left to cure before we refit; anything more extensive becomes a wall repair conversation, which we will flag honestly rather than paper over.
We will also talk about the load. A shelf fixed for a few ornaments will not survive a full run of hardbacks, and part of the repair is agreeing what the shelf can carry from now on. If the shelf itself is cracked or the bracket bent, we will say so — a repair to the wall will not save a broken shelf, and you may need a replacement, which you can supply or we can quote for separately.
What to have ready
Please empty the shelf before we arrive; it makes the inspection and the refit much easier. If you know what broke it loose — a big delivery of books, a curious toddler, a door slamming — tell us, because it affects the fixing choice. And if you have a preference for the shelf staying exactly where it is versus moving a few centimetres, mention it when we quote so the plan is agreed, not assumed.
Aftercare
Give any filler we have used its curing time before you load the shelf heavily, even if the shelf itself is back up and level. Once loaded, spread the weight: heavy items near the brackets rather than in the middle of a long span. Check the shelf after a few weeks of normal use — a correctly fixed shelf should show no movement, and if anything shifts, we want to know while it is a small problem.
When to call
Do not wait until the shelf is hanging by one fixing. A shelf that is visibly pulling away is a shelf that could drop its contents, so it is worth an early call. Same-day visits may be available if you get in touch early in the day. To book, get in touch: you pay a booking fee on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost of the work is quoted and approved by you before we start.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A shelf that tilts, creaks or stands proud of the wall is not just annoying — every day it stays like that, the hole behind it gets bigger. Shelves usually come loose for a reason: the wrong fixing for the wall, too much weight, or plaster that has crumbled around the plug. We diagnose the cause, repair what has failed and refit the shelf with fixings chosen for the job it actually does.

Questions people ask about loose shelf fixing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just tighten the screws myself?
If the shelf has simply worked slightly loose in sound fixings, tightening may hold for a while. But if a plug is spinning, the hole is oversize or the plaster has crumbled, tightening does nothing — the fixing has nothing left to grip. Re-drilling and re-plugging with the correct fixing is usually what the job actually needs, and that is the repair we carry out.
What will you inspect during the visit?
We take the shelf's load off, check each fixing point, assess the wall material and condition around the holes, and examine the shelf and bracket for damage. From that we decide whether the original position can be re-used with better fixings, whether the fixings should move to sound ground, and whether any wall filling is needed first.
Is a loose shelf actually dangerous?
It can be. A loaded shelf that pulls away from the wall drops its contents — and on a high shelf that means books or ornaments landing on whatever is underneath, which is often a sofa or a person. If the shelf moves when you touch it, unload it and keep children and pets away until it has been properly re-fixed.
Can you re-fix the shelf in exactly the same holes?
Only if the holes are still sound. Spinning plugs and crumbled plaster usually mean the original positions have had it, in which case we move the fixing points slightly to solid wall and fill the old holes so you barely notice. We agree that with you before we drill anything new.
What does the repair cost?
There is a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — less notice generally costs more. We quote the full price of the work before we start and you approve it. If the shelf needs replacing or special fixings are required, those materials are quoted separately.
