The pieces that finish a room

Decorative hanging covers a wide family of jobs: the hall mirror, the kitchen clock, the metal wall art, the framed prints, the plaques, the small floating ledges that hold ornaments. Individually each is a few minutes' work; collectively they are the difference between a room that is furnished and one that is finished. The reason these jobs pile up is that each one is slightly fiddly — an odd fixing, an unknown wall, a level that needs a proper check — and so they wait for a weekend that never comes.

Matching the fixing to the item

Every decorative piece has its own way of wanting to be hung, and the fixing has to follow. Mirrors with D-rings or a hanging bar want hooks set at exactly the right spacing; clocks with a keyhole back want a screw set at a precise depth — too deep and the clock sits away from the wall, too shallow and it will not hang at all; sawtooth hangers, cord, split battens and French cleats all have their own requirements. We work with the hardware the item has, fit a matching fixing, and where an item's own hardware is missing or unsuitable we will discuss what is needed — supplied separately and quoted, if we provide it — before improvising anything.

Checking the wall before the drill

Even light items deserve the same discipline as heavy ones: what is this wall made of at this point, is there sound ground for the fixing, and where are pipes and cables likely to run? Plasterboard behaves differently from masonry, and a lightweight item fixed without checking can still end up on the floor if the fixing has nothing behind it. We never drill blind, and we confirm positions with you at the wall before anything is marked permanently.

Special cases we handle with care

A few decorative items need a slightly different touch. Clocks need to hang true and sit flat, or the pendulum and the timekeeping suffer. Mirrors need their fixings matched to their weight — even a modest-looking mirror can surprise you — and their position checked for what reflects back into the room. Metal art and heavier plaques can have sharp edges and real weight in a small footprint, so the fixing matters more than the item's size suggests. And in rented homes, where every hole is a deposit question, we can discuss the least-damaging workable options — though honesty applies here too: adhesive hooks and strips have real weight limits and fail without warning beyond them, so they suit light items only, and we will say when an item is too heavy for a damage-free approach.

What to have ready

Gather the items in one place with any fixings and hardware they came with, and have a rough idea of where each should go — even a phone photo of your plan helps. Clear the walls and the surfaces beneath where we will work. If you would like us to propose positions — where things should sit relative to each other and to eye level — say so when booking and we will build the layout conversation into the visit.

Aftercare

Give items a quick level check after a couple of weeks, particularly clocks and anything on plasterboard; a ten-second adjustment now and then keeps a wall looking deliberate. If an item keeps shifting or a fixing works loose, tell us — it usually means the fixing needs a better match to the wall rather than a tighter screw.

Booking your visit

Because these jobs are individually small, the efficient way to book is to list everything you want hung and let us plan one visit that covers the lot — a handful of light pieces is a short appointment, and more substantial items simply make the visit longer. Same-day slots may be available if you call early. To book: the booking fee is paid on booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts, with any supplied hardware quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

The finishing touches are what make a room feel finished, which is why it is so deflating when they never quite get hung: the mirror still in its box, the clock propped on a shelf, the prints leaning in the hallway. These are small jobs, but they deserve the same care as the big ones — the right fixing for the item, the wall checked before drilling, and everything left level.

Questions people ask about decorative wall hanging

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I hang these decorative pieces myself?

You certainly could, and for a light item on a known wall it is a ten-minute job. Where these jobs go wrong is the detail — a keyhole fixing set at the wrong depth for a clock, hooks spaced wrong for a mirror's D-rings, adhesive hooks asked to carry more than they can. If you have a batch of items or walls you are unsure about, one visit covers the lot properly.

What do you check before hanging an item?

We look at how the item is made to hang — its hooks, cord, keyhole or batten — assess the wall at the fixing point, avoid likely pipes and cables, and choose a fixing matched to both the item and the wall. Positions are confirmed with you at the wall before anything is drilled, and each item is checked level once hung.

Can you hang things without drilling holes?

For genuinely light items, adhesive hooks and strips can work, and in a rented home they may be worth considering — though they have real weight limits and fail without warning beyond them, so they suit light pieces only. For mirrors, clocks and anything with weight, a proper fixing is the reliable route. We will be straight with you about which category your items fall into rather than promise a damage-free result that will not hold.

Why does my clock not hang flat against the wall?

Nearly always the fixing: clocks with keyhole or slotted backs need the screw set at an exact depth — too deep and the clock stands off the wall, too shallow and it will not locate at all. It is a small detail that decides the result, and setting it correctly is a two-minute job when you have the right screw and a bit of patience with the depth.

How is a decorative hanging visit priced?

There is a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit — booking ahead generally costs less. We quote the full cost before work starts and you approve it. If any hooks, fixings or hardware need to be supplied, those are identified and quoted separately from the labour.
