Driveways wear out in plain sight, which is what makes decisions about them hard. The fade, the scuffs and the thin patches arrive so gradually that it is difficult to judge whether you are looking at a surface that needs cleaning and a little care, one that would benefit from resurfacing, or one that has reached the end of its working life. And the price difference between those answers is large. This page explains how wear shows up on different surfaces, what we assess, and how we help you choose between the options without overspending or under-fixing.

How wear shows on different surfaces

Tarmac ages by losing its binder: the surface goes grey, chippings loosen, the texture coarsens and edges crumble — a process accelerated by sunlight, frost and standing water. Concrete weathers by staining, spalling and hairline cracking as the surface paste wears and water works in. Block paving wears at the joints — sand disappears, blocks rock, edges creep — while the blocks themselves last remarkably well. Gravel displaces, thins and mixes with the soil beneath. Each of these has a different economic answer: worn tarmac often rewards resurfacing; spalled concrete may be repairable in patches or ready for replacement depending on the base; tired block paving usually just needs the joints and levels sorted; thinning gravel needs topping up and possibly an edge and weed-membrane rethink.

What we assess

The surface is only half the story, so we assess what is under it as well as on it. We look at how evenly the surface has worn — wear concentrated in the wheel paths says something about loads and compaction that uniform wear does not. We probe for soft spots and dips, check falls and drainage, and look at the edges where failure usually starts. We note standing water paths, weed growth and any repairs that have already been attempted, because a drive covered in failed patches is telling us its base has problems the surface cannot hide. The conclusion we are working towards is simple: is the base sound enough for a surface-level solution, or does the wear reflect something below that resurfacing would only cover up?

The options, honestly

Cleaning and maintenance is the first tier: a proper clean, joints re-sanded on block paving, weeds dealt with, minor cracks sealed — often transformative on a drive that is dirty rather than worn. Repair comes next: localised patches, re-levelling dips, edge rebuilding. Resurfacing suits a sound base with a tired surface — a new tarmac overlay or, on block paving, a relay — and it is a quoted project after survey because its suitability depends entirely on what the base proves to be. Replacement is the last resort for a drive whose base has failed, and quoting it without a survey would be dishonest. The visit gives you our honest read of which tier your drive belongs in, and each tier is priced on its own merits: the visit-rate work is quoted and approved before we start, and the larger projects are quoted after survey with multi-day work staged.

Limits

We do not guarantee wear rates — weather, use and maintenance decide how any surface ages — and we do not guarantee against future weathering or settlement. What we do give you is a truthful assessment of where your drive is in its life, the options at that point, and what each would realistically buy you.

Booking and costs

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The assessment runs at that rate; any visit-rate repairs are quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. When you book, tell us the surface type and approximate age, what has changed recently — and whether any areas dip or hold water — because that steers the assessment.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A driveway that has faded, scuffed and worn thin is not necessarily a driveway that needs replacing — and equally, some worn surfaces are past the point where resurfacing pays. Our visit assesses the surface, the base and the drainage, then gives you the honest range of options with the real condition behind them.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about worn driveway surface

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I resurface a worn driveway myself?

Cleaning, re-sanding block paving joints and sealing small cracks are reasonable DIY jobs and we will confirm which apply to your drive. Resurfacing itself is not — overlays need a sound, well-drained base and correct falls, and the materials involved are not forgiving of inexperience. The common DIY mistake is resurfacing over a base that has already failed, which wastes the cost of the materials within a couple of winters.

What do you check when assessing a worn driveway?

We look at how evenly the surface has worn, probe the base for soft spots and dips, check falls, drainage and edges, and note any failed previous repairs or standing water. The point of the assessment is to establish whether the wear is a surface issue or a symptom of something underneath, because that decides whether cleaning, repair, resurfacing or replacement is the sensible spend.

Is a worn driveway a safety problem?

It can become one. Loose chippings are thrown by tyres and turn to slippery mud in rain, spalled concrete trips feet, and worn areas often coincide with dips that hold water and ice. Nothing about ordinary wear is urgent, but we will flag any defect that has reached the hazardous stage — and those are worth fixing regardless of what you decide about the wider surface.

Can you tell me whether to resurface or replace over the phone?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise — the difference between the two comes down to the state of the base, which only an assessment can establish. What we can say on the phone is what we will look at and roughly what each option involves. The honest comparison of costs comes after the visit, when the base has been checked and the scope is real.

How much does it cost to deal with a worn driveway?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Cleaning and visit-rate repairs are quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. Resurfacing or replacement are quoted projects priced after a survey, so you never commit to a number that was guessed rather than measured.
