A crack in a driveway is rarely just a crack in a driveway. Sometimes it really is nothing more than the surface ageing — an old concrete drive will develop hairline cracks over decades and they can stay stable for years. But other times the crack is the visible end of a problem lower down: a soft or eroded subbase, a tree root lifting the slab, or water washing away the material the surface sits on. Repairing the surface without understanding the cause means the crack usually reappears, and this page explains how we tell the difference.

What causes driveways to crack

The common causes are worth understanding because each leads to a different fix. Age and weathering simply make concrete and tarmac brittle: fine cracks appear in the surface and, while unattractive, they may not get worse. Water is a bigger enemy — if a driveway has been laid without an adequate fall or the joints and cracks let rain in, frost then opens the cracks wider each winter as water freezes and expands. Inadequate or compacted-poorly subbase is the most serious cause: when the load-bearing layer beneath the surface is too thin, soft or disturbed, the surface flexes under vehicle loads and cracks in straight or wide lines where the movement is greatest. Tree roots and heavy vehicles parked in the wrong places round out the list.

How we assess the crack

We start with the pattern, because patterns tell stories. Single straight cracks are often old contraction joints that have opened; a crack running alongside the drive at slab width suggests movement at a joint; a cluster of cracks over one area, or a crack that has visibly widened and stepped, points to the ground or subbase moving beneath. We check whether the surface either side of the crack is level, press and probe to find any hollow or soft spots, look at the edges where the subbase is often weakest, and follow where water goes — pooling after rain, or draining towards a crack, is a strong clue that water is getting under the surface.

Repair options

If the surface is sound and the crack is shallow and stable, a flexible crack filler or resin repair can seal it against water and frost, and that may be all you need. Where cracks have let water in for years, we clean them out properly before filling so the repair bonds to sound material. If our assessment shows a soft subbase or an area that has settled, we will say so plainly: a surface repair there will not last, and the honest options are to excavate and rebuild that section or, on older drives with widespread failure, to consider the surface a candidate for replacement. For that larger work, we quote after survey because the scope — depth of excavation, volume of material, disposal — is not something we can price blind.

Limits we are honest about

We do not guarantee that a repaired crack will never reappear, particularly where water, frost and vehicle loads keep working on the surface. What we can do is repair the cause as well as the symptom, give you realistic expectations, and tell you what to watch for. If digging is involved, we locate underground services carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan can guarantee exactly what lies below, and utility plans and a safe dig approach remain part of the arrangement we will explain to you.

Aftercare and when to call

Keep the drive swept and the cracks and channels clear of leaves and grit so water has somewhere to go rather than under the surface. Recheck any filled crack after the first hard winter and call us if it reopens, widens, or starts stepping — those are signs something underneath is still moving. Call sooner if the crack is in front of a parked vehicle and is starting to break up, because potholes are cheaper to prevent than to excavate and rebuild.

Booking a visit

Booking is straightforward: pay the booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of any repair is quoted and approved before we start, with parts and materials quoted separately. When you call, tell us the surface type — tarmac, concrete, block paving or gravel — roughly how old it is, how long the crack has been there and whether it changes after heavy rain or frost. Photos help us allocate the right amount of time.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Cracks in a driveway look simple, but what opened them often sits a layer underneath the surface. Our visit tells you which you are dealing with: we examine the crack pattern, the base beneath and the way water moves across the drive, then explain honestly whether a repair will last or whether the subbase needs attention first.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about cracked driveway surface

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I fill a driveway crack myself?

For a clean, stable hairline crack in concrete, a driveway crack filler from a DIY store is a reasonable job and we will tell you if that is all yours needs. The risk is filling a crack that is actually the surface over a failing subbase — you seal the evidence in and the problem carries on below. If the crack is wide, stepped, or growing, get it assessed first.

What do you check when assessing a cracked driveway?

We look at the crack's pattern, width and whether the surface has stepped or sunk either side, probe for soft or hollow areas in the base, check the edges and any vehicle paths, and trace where rainwater actually drains. The aim is to decide whether the crack is a surface issue or a symptom of something under the surface, and we explain which it is in plain English.

Is a cracked driveway a safety problem?

It can become one. A crack that opens wide enough to catch a wheel or a foot is a trip hazard, and a cracked surface that breaks up can throw loose material at vehicles and pedestrians. If the surface is starting to crumble along the crack, keep parked vehicles away from it until it is assessed, and we will flag anything unsafe on our visit.

Why do cracks keep coming back after filling?

Because the filler was dealing with the symptom, not the cause. If water is draining under the surface, or the subbase is soft or settled, the drive keeps moving and the crack reopens along the same line. That is exactly why we assess first — fixing the drainage or the base gives a repair its only real chance of lasting.

How much does it cost to repair a cracked driveway?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with any materials quoted separately. If our assessment shows the subbase needs rebuilding rather than a simple surface repair, that larger work is quoted after survey so you know the real scope first.
