Potholes start small and quietly. Water finds a weak spot — a hairline crack, a worn edge, a badly compacted patch — and sits in the surface or soaks into the layers beneath. In frosty weather that water expands and breaks the surface open; vehicles then knock the loose edges away and the hole grows. So a pothole is not really a hole, it is a diagnosis waiting to be made: of water, of a surface past its best, or of a subbase that no longer carries the load it was built for. This page explains how we work out which you have and what the fix looks like.
What potholes tell us about the driveway
The surroundings of a pothole are as informative as the pothole itself. If the drive has scattered hairline cracks, faded binding and a generally tired surface, the holes are likely the final stage of an old surface wearing out, and patching can be a sensible, economical answer. But if the pothole has soft, crumbly edges that extend well beyond the hole, or the drive has dipped around it, the giveaway is the subbase: the load-bearing layer beneath has eroded, been washed out by water, or was too thin or poorly compacted in the first place. Filling that kind of hole with fresh surface material is like plastering over a rotten floorboard — it looks better for a season and then fails again.
How we diagnose the problem
We examine each hole's size, depth and edges, and press and probe the surrounding area to find where sound material stops and soft ground begins — the failure zone is often wider than it looks. We check the drive's fall and drainage to understand where the water that fed the pothole is coming from, look at how vehicles use the area, and consider the age and type of the surface. Where several holes cluster or the drive has widespread dips, we will say plainly that we are looking at subbase failure across an area rather than isolated damage, because that changes the repair conversation completely.
Repair options
For a sound base with isolated holes, the repair is to cut back to sound edges, rebuild the surface in properly compacted layers and seal the joint so water cannot get in again. Where the subbase has failed, the honest repair is to excavate that section, remove the contaminated material, rebuild the base in compacted layers and resurface it to match — and the excavation may need underground services located carefully, with detectors used where appropriate; no scan guarantees exactly what is below, so utility plans and a safe dig approach are part of how we work. On older drives with widespread subbase failure, we will tell you when patching stops being economical and replacement becomes the better money, and that larger project is quoted after survey.
Limits, honestly
We do not guarantee that a repaired area will never settle or that new potholes will not form elsewhere on an ageing drive — water, frost and traffic keep working on every surface. What we do guarantee is a proper diagnosis, materials and compaction appropriate to the repair, and an explanation of what to watch for afterwards. If a hole reopens at the same spot, that tells us something about the layers below that we will want to look at again rather than fill a third time.
Safety in the meantime
Keep vehicles and feet away from soft-edged holes, because traffic spreads the damage quickly and edges crumble outwards. Mark anything deep enough to catch a wheel or a foot, and remember potholes collect water that freezes in winter and turns a small defect into a large one overnight.
Booking and what to tell us
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. When you book, tell us the surface type and age, how many holes there are, whether they grow after rain or frost, and what vehicles use the drive. A couple of clear photos from a distance and close up help us bring the right materials and time.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A pothole never forms on a healthy driveway. By the time the surface has broken away, something underneath it has usually failed, and our visit is about finding out what. We assess the holes, the material around them and the condition of the base, then give you a straight answer on what will actually stop the holes coming back.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about potholes in driveway
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fill a pothole in my driveway myself?
A cold-lay patch compound from a DIY shop can hold a small pothole for a while and is a reasonable temporary measure — sweep the hole clean, fill and tamp it firmly. The risk is filling a hole whose edges are soft: the patch sits on failing material and sinks within months. If the surrounding surface sounds hollow or has dipped, have the base assessed before spending money.
What do you check when we come out about potholes?
We measure the holes and probe the edges and surrounding surface to find where sound material stops and the failure zone begins. We check the drive's fall and where water collects, assess whether the subbase is the problem or just the surface, and then explain plainly whether patching, sectional repair or something bigger is the honest answer.
Is a driveway pothole dangerous?
It can be — for people tripping, for vehicle wheels and suspension, and for anyone walking in the dark who does not see it. Soft edges crumble outward under traffic, so a small hole becomes a large one quickly. Keep cars away from soft-edged holes and flag anything deep until it is repaired; we will tell you on the visit if something needs immediate making safe.
Why do potholes keep reappearing in the same place?
Because the layer underneath was never the issue that got fixed. If the subbase is eroded, contaminated or too thin, a surface patch sits on ground that cannot support it, and vehicle loads press it straight back down. A lasting repair rebuilds the base in compacted layers and seals the edges against water — which is why we diagnose before we fill.
How much will pothole repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. If the assessment shows subbase failure over a wider area, that larger project is quoted after survey rather than guessed at.
