What Weak Circulation Looks Like
A system with poor circulation does not usually stop working; it distributes heat badly. The radiator nearest the boiler gets hot quickly, the furthest one never quite does, and the rooms at the end of the circuit feel cold however long the heating runs. The boiler may run continuously without reaching its target, or cycle more than it should. Hot water may still be fine, which is a useful clue that the boiler itself is producing heat.
The distinction between weak circulation and a blockage matters. A blockage typically affects one radiator or one leg, often suddenly. Weak circulation affects the whole pattern of heat distribution and usually develops gradually.
The Common Causes
- Balancing. Radiators need their lockshield valves set so that flow is shared. If they are all fully open, the nearest ones take most of the water.
- Pump setting. A pump on its lowest setting may not overcome the resistance of a large or extended circuit.
- Partially closed valves. A lockshield turned nearly shut, a gate valve stuck part way, or a motorised valve not fully opening.
- Sludge and scale. Internal narrowing reduces flow everywhere, worst at the far end of the circuit.
- Pipe sizing and layout. Long runs of small-bore pipe, or a system extended over the years without regard to the original design, restrict what reaches the far radiators.
- Air. A pocket reduces flow in the affected section, though it tends to be more localised than general weakness.
How We Assess It
We start with temperature: measuring each radiator's flow and return pipes and comparing the drop across them. A radiator with a large temperature drop is receiving too little flow; one with almost no drop is taking too much. We check every lockshield and control valve, confirm the motorised valves open fully, and check the pump setting against the system's size. Where the water looks dirty at a bleed point, we treat sludge as a likely contributor. This turns a vague complaint into a specific adjustment or repair.
Balancing, Explained
Balancing is the process of setting lockshield valves so distribution is even. It is done hot, with the heating running steadily, and it takes patience: adjust, wait for temperatures to settle, measure again. A proper balance can transform a system that felt inadequate, and it costs nothing in parts. It is also the step most often skipped when radiators are added, which is why extensions so often end with cold back bedrooms.
When Parts Are Needed
If the pump is undersized or worn, replacement restores head pressure. If a valve will not open fully, it is replaced. If sludge is the cause, cleaning comes first and balancing after, in that order, because balancing a dirty system simply distributes less heat more evenly. Replacement of an undersized pipe run is a defined piece of work we quote before starting.
What We Cannot Change
System design has limits. If a circuit was installed with too little capacity for the number of radiators, balancing will improve distribution but cannot create flow that the pipe bore cannot carry. We will say so plainly rather than promising a transformation. We also cannot guarantee identical temperatures in every room, because sizing, insulation and radiator output vary.
Safety and Scope
All work here is on the water side: valves, pumps, radiators and pipework. We are not Gas Safe registered, so no gas work is carried out by Maintenance Men. If the boiler has a gas, flue or combustion fault, we stop and recommend a Gas Safe registered engineer. A gas smell means no switches or flames, ventilate if safe, leave the property and call 0800 111 999. A CO alarm means get everyone outside and call 0800 111 999, and 999 if anyone has symptoms.
After the Visit
We record the temperatures we measured and the settings we changed, so the balance can be checked later without starting again. If you add a radiator or change a valve, ask for the system to be rebalanced as part of that work; a single change can undo a careful balance.
Book a Circulation Assessment
Tell us which rooms are cold, whether the problem came on gradually, whether any radiators were added recently, and your boiler make and model. We cover the West Midlands and may have same-day slots, though we never promise them. We take the booking fee up front, the hourly labour rate reflects how soon you need us, and we quote the full total for your approval before we begin.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
When some radiators are scorching and others barely warm, the system is moving water unevenly rather than failing outright. That can be a balancing issue, a pump set too low, a partially closed valve or the early stages of sludge. We will measure the circuit properly, correct what is adjustable, and tell you if the cause is dirt rather than settings.
What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Questions people ask about weak water circulation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I balance radiators myself?
It is possible with a thermometer and patience: adjust lockshields on the hottest radiators first, then work outwards. It takes several rounds of measuring. If you are unsure which valve is which, a visit avoids making the imbalance worse.
How is weak circulation different from a blockage?
Weak circulation affects the overall pattern, with distant radiators underperforming gradually. A blockage usually hits one radiator or leg, often suddenly. We measure temperature drops to tell them apart before recommending work.
Will a new pump fix cold radiators?
Only if the pump is the limiting factor. If the system is sludged or badly balanced, a bigger pump can add noise without solving distribution. We check flow and temperature first so the money goes to the right cause.
Do I need a power flush for this?
If the water is dirty and several radiators have cold bottoms, cleaning is the right first step. If temperatures are uneven but the water is clean, balancing and valve checks are more likely to be the answer.
What does it cost?
The booking fee is paid at booking and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Valves, pumps or pipe replacement are quoted separately once identified.
