Scratches are the most common complaint we hear about glass hobs, and the most commonly mishandled — because between the internet's polish-it-yourself tutorials and the salesperson's replace-the-hob pitch, very few people get a straight answer about what their scratches actually mean. The truth sits in the middle: most are cosmetic, a few are structural, and the difference is assessable.

What kind of scratch are you looking at?

Run a fingernail gently across the mark. A mark your nail barely finds is surface scuffing — the kind that comes from sliding a pan, a gritty cloth or a stray grain that caught under a pot. It's cosmetic. A groove your nail clearly drops into is a different class: the glass surface has been cut, and deep scores can propagate under heat cycles, and sometimes indicate an impact heavy enough to have stressed the glass beyond what the scratch shows.

What can safely be done about marks

For light scuffing, the manufacturer-approved route works: ceramic hob cleaner, a soft cloth or dedicated hob scraper used correctly and cool, and patience. Some specialist polishing products can improve fine marks further. What we don't recommend is the DIY grinding approach — abrasive kits and power tools promise miracle results and can thin or weaken the glass, leaving a surface that's smoother and structurally worse. If a deep score is involved, restoration isn't the answer; assessment is.

What our assessment covers

The engineer examines the marks' depth and pattern, checks around them for hairline cracking you may not have noticed, and where appropriate tests that the hob beneath is unaffected — an impact strong enough to score glass can also disturb connections or the glass's seating. We then give you the honest options: cleaning advice for cosmetic marks, a replacement glass top where the model allows and it's worth it, or a clear recommendation that the surface is fine to use as it is.

If a replacement glass is the answer

On many ceramic and induction models the glass top is a replaceable part, and where yours is worth restoring we identify the correct glass for the model, quote it separately from labour and fit it with your approval. On older hobs, part cost can approach a new appliance; we'll show you that comparison rather than pushing the dearer option. If a new hob is chosen instead, we can quote fitting it — noting that any gas connection involved would be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, as Maintenance Men doesn't do gas work.

Keeping the next scratch away

The habits that prevent scratches are unglamorous but effective: lift pans rather than slide them, use pans with smooth clean bases, sweep the surface before cooking so grit doesn't catch under pots, cool the glass before cleaning, and use ceramic hob cleaner with soft cloths rather than scourers. A few weeks of those habits stops most glass hobs accumulating new damage.

When scratches are actually a claim

If your hob was damaged in transit, during a recent kitchen fitting, or by a tradesperson's work, the scratch may be someone else's liability — and a dated assessment with photographs is what supports that conversation. Tell us if that's the situation; we'll document what we find and give you a written summary you can put in front of whoever's responsible. It changes nothing about the technical work, but it can change who ends up paying for it, and we're glad to help make that case clearly.

Booking

Contact us with the hob's brand and model, a description of the marks and how they arrived, and whether the hob has behaved oddly since. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and any work is quoted and approved before it starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Scratches on a glass hob are cosmetic in most cases, but not always — deep scores can weaken the surface or hint at impacts that did more damage than is visible. We assess what you're actually dealing with and tell you honestly whether polishing, replacement glass or simply better habits is the answer.

Questions people ask about scratched hob surface

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can hob scratches be polished out?

Light surface marks can sometimes be reduced with ceramic hob cleaner and a soft cloth, and specialist products exist for fine scratches. Deep scores can't be polished away safely — aggressive abrasives or DIY grinding can weaken the glass further, so we don't recommend them.

Are scratches dangerous?

Fine marks usually aren't. A deep gouge — one you can catch a fingernail in — deserves assessment, because it can propagate with heat cycles and may indicate an impact that damaged something beneath the glass.

What should I never use on a glass hob?

Scouring pads, abrasive powders, knives or scrapers used aggressively, and harsh chemicals. Use ceramic hob cleaner or a damp soft cloth, cool the hob first, and lift pans rather than sliding them — sliding is what scores the surface in the first place.

When is replacing the glass worth it?

If deep scratches have compromised the surface or you simply want the hob restored, a replacement glass top can be fitted where the model allows it. We quote the part and labour separately so you can compare against the hob's age and value.

What does a visit cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Any work is quoted in full and approved by you before it starts, with parts priced separately.
