The controls are the only part of a hob you actually operate, so when they stop responding the appliance becomes either unusable or dangerous in a subtler way — heat on when you want it off, or locked at a power level you can't change. Control faults deserve quick, proper diagnosis, and that's what we provide.
Start with the checks that cost nothing
Capacitive touch controls are surprisingly easy to confuse. A film of grease from cooking, moisture from a boil-over, or a heavy-handed wipe with a wet cloth can leave the panel registering phantom touches or none at all. Child locks and demo modes get activated by accident more often than anyone admits. Powering the hob down at the isolator for a minute forces a reset that clears some control glitches. These checks are safe, free and occasionally the entire fix — so do them before booking.
When the fault is real
If a clean, unlocked, reset hob still ignores you, the likely causes are a failed touch panel, a control board fault, a damaged ribbon connection between them, or a power-section problem starving the controls while other parts work. Heat and moisture are the panel's enemies, and years of steam and spillovers eventually get in. Sometimes only part of the panel fails — one zone's controls dead while others respond — which points more specifically to the board or its connectors.
What our diagnosis involves
The engineer verifies the supply, checks the panel's power and connections, and tests the control board's behaviour against the symptoms. Where fault codes or diagnostic modes exist, we use them. The outcome is a specific finding — panel, board, connection or supply — explained in plain English with the repair options and costs. We complete diagnosis before pricing any repair, so you're deciding based on what's actually wrong.
Repair or replace, honestly assessed
Touch panels and control boards are replacement parts for specific models; we identify the correct one, quote it separately and fit it only with your approval. On a good hob, a control repair usually makes sense. On an old or basic hob where the board approaches the price of a new appliance, we'll show you that comparison and support whichever decision you make — including quoting to fit a replacement hob if that's your choice.
A safety note and a scope note
Never open a hob to reach the control board yourself; internal voltages remain dangerous after power-off, and modern boards hold charge. If your appliance is gas rather than electric, remember that burner, valve and ignition faults on the gas side are gas work — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work, so we'd refer those to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
Moisture and the control panel
Kitchens are hard on control panels. Steam from pots, splashes from washing up and sprays from cleaning all find their way to the panel's edges, and years of it eventually affect the electronics beneath. Prevention is mostly about habit: wipe panels with a damp-then-dry cloth rather than spraying them directly, avoid draping wet cloths over the hob, and don't cover pans so tightly that steam pools across the surface. None of this makes a panel immortal, but it's the difference between a control board lasting fifteen years and needing one at eight.
Booking in
Tell us the hob's brand and model, which controls misbehave, whether the fault is constant or intermittent, and what you've already tried, including any error codes. Book by phone or website: the booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and no repair starts until you've seen and approved the full quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A hob whose controls ignore your touch — or light up and do nothing — leaves you with heat you can't command, which is worse than no heat at all. Control faults usually trace to the panel, the board behind it or the connections between them. We test properly, explain clearly and price the repair before starting.

Questions people ask about control panel not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I do anything about unresponsive controls myself?
Try the basics first: power the hob down at the isolator for a minute and back on, check for an activated child lock, and clean the panel — grease and moisture films confuse capacitive touch controls. If that fails, the fault needs an engineer; don't open the casing.
Why would the whole control panel fail?
Touch panels and the boards behind them fail with age, heat exposure and moisture ingress. A burnt connector or a power-section fault can also leave controls dead while the rest of the hob is mechanically fine.
Are control panels repairable or only replaceable?
Usually replaced rather than repaired — the panel and board are replaced as parts for your specific model. We identify the correct part, quote it separately from labour and fit it only with your approval.
Is it worth repairing an older hob's controls?
It depends on part cost against the hob's age and condition. We give you that comparison straight: sometimes the part is cheap and the repair obvious; sometimes a new hob is the better spend. Either decision is yours, made with real numbers.
How is the visit charged?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. Any repair is quoted in full and approved by you before work starts, with parts priced separately.
