A stair lift's wiring leads a hard life. Part of it is fixed, part travels with the carriage, and the section in between flexes through its entire range on every single journey — thousands of times a year. Add vibration, temperature swings, dust, the occasional knock from a vacuum cleaner, and it is no surprise that wiring is a frequent source of stair lift faults, particularly on lifts past their first decade.
How wiring fails and what it causes
Flexing sections chafe where they pass guides and clips until the insulation wears through; connectors work loose with vibration and corrode with humidity; terminals back off; and cables get damaged mechanically — caught, crushed, or chewed by pets. The symptoms vary wildly with which wire is affected: a dead lift from a broken supply conductor; one-direction travel from a broken control conductor; intermittent stopping at one particular spot on the stairs, where a chafed wire only makes and breaks contact at that point; erratic beeping and behaviour from a loose sensor wire; and, worst case, tripping of the house electrics or a burning smell from a genuine short — which means stop using the lift immediately.
The diagnostic trap with wiring faults
Wiring faults mimic everything else. A chafed sensor wire looks like a faulty sensor; a corroded connector looks like a dying board; a broken conductor that reconnects when the carriage judders looks like an intermittent power fault. That is why systematic tracing matters: every connector inspected and re-seated, every flexing section tested while being moved, continuity proven end to end, and the fault reproduced before being declared found. Guesswork swapping parts on a wiring fault wastes money and leaves the real fault in place.
What you should do
Look — do not touch. If you can see a damaged, pinched or chewed cable anywhere on the rail, carriage or wall route, note it and book; do not tape over it. Do not open covers or test anything. Stop using the lift if it trips the electrics, smells of burning or behaves erratically, and book urgently. If it stops with someone aboard, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.
How we trace and repair
We map the lift's wiring from supply to motor and test it in sections: fixed runs first, then the flexing loom through its full travel with instruments attached, then every connector and terminal. We repair chafed or damaged sections with correctly specified cable, protect them properly at guides and clips, re-make corroded connections, and secure everything so it cannot rub or snag again. Where a connector or loom section is beyond reliable repair we replace it with manufacturer-approved parts. We finish by running repeated full travel cycles under load to prove the fault is genuinely gone — a wiring fault that survives a test cycle is not fixed. All costs are quoted in full for your approval before work starts, parts quoted separately.
Aftercare
Keep vacuum cleaners and moving furniture away from the rail and carriage, mention any return of the symptom immediately, and have the lift serviced annually — a service checks connectors and flexing sections as routine, catching wear before it fails. And never store anything leaning against the rail that could press on the wiring.
Booking
Contact us with the make and model and describe the symptoms, especially anything that happens at one particular spot on the stairs. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Wiring faults are among the most misleading stair lift problems — a chafed cable can cause a dead lift, erratic behaviour, or a fault that only appears at one point on the stairs. Our engineers trace every run, flex and connector until the fault is found and proven fixed.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about wiring issue
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I tape up a damaged wire I can see on the lift?
No — tape hides the damage, does not restore the cable's protection, and makes the eventual repair harder to trace. Note where the damage is, leave the lift out of use if the cable is a supply or control line, and book us in. Damaged wiring needs proper repair with specified cable.
Why does my lift stop only at one spot on the stairs?
That is the classic signature of a wiring fault in the flexing section — a chafed or broken conductor that only loses contact at one carriage position. Tell us the exact spot when you book; it directs our tracing immediately and usually shortens the visit.
What do you actually do on a wiring visit?
We test the wiring in sections — fixed runs, the flexing loom through its full travel, and every connector. We repair damaged sections with specified cable and protection, re-make poor connections, and prove the repair with repeated loaded travel cycles before we call it done.
The lift tripped the electrics twice today — is it safe to try again?
No. Tripping means an active fault, very possibly a short, and resetting it repeatedly is how small electrical faults become dangerous ones. Leave it isolated and book urgently. If there is any burning smell as well, do not use the lift at all.
How is a wiring repair charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. After tracing the fault we quote the full cost of the repair for your approval before starting, and parts such as cable or connectors are quoted separately.
