The footrest is the part of the stair lift handled most clumsily: pushed up with a foot, kicked down, loaded with weight as you step on, and expected to fold every single journey. It is also a safety component twice over — a raised footrest blocks travel on most lifts, and a footrest that will not fold creates a trip hazard on the bottom tread for everyone else in the house.
Why footrests stop folding properly
Wear and loading are the main stories. The hinge pivots and linkage wear and stiffen until folding needs real force. Springs weaken or break — a footrest that suddenly hangs heavy or slams down is telling you exactly that. Linkages bend when the footrest is caught by a foot, a vacuum cleaner or a stair carpet edge. On powered or assisted-fold models, the motor, gas strut or mechanism behind the assist fails, leaving the footrest immovable. Sensors matter too: the footplate position sensor decides whether the lift may travel, and a misreading sensor stops the lift even when the plate looks fine. And plain grime — drinks, pet hair, cleaning products — stiffens the mechanism long before anything actually breaks.
What it stops
On most models the lift refuses to travel with the footrest raised, so a footrest that will not fold down means no journeys at all, and one that jams mid-fold can stop the lift with someone aboard. At the bottom of the stairs, a footrest left standing upright is exactly at shin height for anyone carrying shopping or laundry past it.
What you can do safely
Keep the footrest clean and check for visible damage, and if your manual describes lubrication points or a reset, follow it exactly with the specified product. Sweep the treads and hinge line regularly so grit never works into the pivots, and fold the footrest by hand where you can rather than with your foot. Never force a footrest that has jammed — bending the linkage turns a small repair into a replacement. Never tape or tie the footrest down or up to get the lift moving, and never bypass the position sensor. If the footrest jams with someone aboard mid-journey, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.
How we diagnose and repair
We test the folding action through its full range, identify whether the resistance is in the pivots, the springs, the linkage or an assist mechanism, and check the footplate position sensor against the actual plate position. We free and lubricate pivots with manufacturer-specified products, replace weak or broken springs, straighten or replace bent linkages, and repair or replace assist mechanisms where fitted — always with manufacturer-approved parts. We finish by proving the folding action through repeated cycles and confirming the lift travels normally. All costs are quoted in full for your approval before work starts, parts quoted separately.
Aftercare
Fold the footrest with your hand rather than your foot where you can — foot-flipping loads the linkage sideways. Keep cleaning fluids and pet hair away from the hinge line, and mention any increase in the effort needed to fold; a stiffening mechanism is months from being a jammed one. An annual service covers the folding mechanism as routine.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, whether the footrest is manual or powered-fold, and exactly how it misbehaves. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A footrest that jams halfway, hangs heavy or will not lift makes every journey awkward — and because most lifts will not travel with the footrest up, it can stop the lift entirely. Our visit puts the mechanism back to easy, one-foot operation.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about footrest not folding properly
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
The footrest has gone really heavy to lift — can I keep going?
It will work for a while, but heavy folding usually means weakening springs or stiff pivots, and it ends in a footrest that will not lift at all or slams down unexpectedly. It is worth booking before that happens; spring and pivot work is a relatively small job when caught early.
What do you check when a footrest jams?
We test the folding action through its full range to find where it binds, then inspect the pivots, springs, linkage and any powered-assist mechanism, and verify the footplate position sensor matches the plate's actual position. Repairs use manufacturer-approved parts and are quoted in full before we start.
Can I force the footrest down if it's stuck?
No — forcing a jammed footrest usually bends the linkage and turns a freeing-off job into a replacement. If it is stuck mid-fold, leave it and book a visit. If someone is aboard and the lift has stopped, keep them safe and comfortable, call 999 if they are in distress, and use manual release only per the manufacturer's instructions.
The lift won't move because the footrest looks down but the lift disagrees — why?
The footplate position sensor may be misreading, whether through wear, dirt or damage. Do not bypass or tape the sensor — the lift refusing to travel with the footrest up is a genuine safety feature. Book a diagnosis and we will test the sensor and mechanism together.
How is the visit charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. After diagnosis we quote the full cost of the repair for your approval before starting, and parts such as springs or linkages are quoted separately.
