When a stair lift will not start and shows a lock, key or padlock indicator — or simply beeps and refuses — it is almost never being difficult for its own sake. The lift has engaged a safety lock because one of its conditions for safe travel is not met. Understanding which condition is the key to sorting it: some are resolved by the user in seconds, others need diagnosis and repair.

The common safety locks and what triggers them

The parked-position lock: many lifts lock when parked and require the seat to be squared and the key turned before travel — a lift that seems dead is often just still locked. The swivel lock: the seat will not allow travel until it is locked facing along the stairs, which matters most after a transfer at a landing. The footplate lock: a raised or partially folded footplate prevents travel. The armrest locks: raised armrests block movement. The obstruction lock: a footplate edge sensor reading pressure latches the lift until cleared and reset. The low-battery lock: a lift returned to charge with flat batteries locks out travel until it has recharged sufficiently. And the fault lock: a detected electrical or mechanical fault latches the lift out of service until the fault is cleared and, on many models, the system reset.

What you can do yourself

Work through the manual's list deliberately rather than pressing the button repeatedly: seat squared and locked, swivel locked, footplate down, armrests down, key on, nothing near the footplate edges, and the lift left on its charge points long enough to recharge if a low battery is suspected. If your manual describes a reset procedure after a latched condition, follow it exactly. If the lift then starts and runs normally through a full journey, the lock did its job and nothing more is needed — though it is worth noting what triggered it. If the lock returns, or the lift will not reset at all, book a diagnosis: the underlying sensor, battery or component fault needs finding, not just silencing.

One firm caution

Never attempt to defeat a safety lock — no jumpering, no taping sensors, no disabling interlocks to force travel. Those locks exist because the conditions they check are genuinely dangerous to travel without. If a lock has engaged and no user-level reset clears it, the lift should stay out of use until an engineer has found the cause. And if the lift has behaved erratically, tripped the electrics or smelled of burning, stop entirely until checked. If someone is aboard mid-journey when the lift locks and stops, keep them safe, comfortable and calm, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use a manual release only strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a confident person — never climb under, push or force a suspended lift.

How we diagnose recurring lockouts

We identify which lock the lift is engaging from its indicators and our testing, then find why: a drifting seat or footplate sensor, a marginal battery that triggers the low-battery lock under load, a sticking interlock switch, a fault in the control electronics, or a worn component the lift detects. We repair the cause with manufacturer-approved parts, prove the lift through repeated full travel cycles, and confirm the lock no longer engages in normal use. Every cost is quoted in full and approved by you before work starts, parts quoted separately.

Aftercare

Adopt a consistent parking routine — seat squared, footplate down, lift on its charge points — and the user-level locks will rarely trouble you again. Report any lock that recurs or appears without an obvious trigger; recurring lockouts are the lift telling you a component is drifting.

Booking

Tell us the make and model, what the lift shows or beeps, and what you have already tried. You pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Stair lifts refuse to start for good reasons — a safety lock has engaged because the lift believes something is not right. Knowing which lock it is tells you whether a simple reset will do, or whether the underlying cause needs an engineer's attention.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about stair lift won’t start due to safety lock

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

The lift won't start and shows a lock symbol — can I fix that myself?

Often yes, if the manual supports it: check the seat is squared and locked, the swivel is locked, the footplate and armrests are down, the key is on, and nothing is near the footplate edges, then follow the manual's reset procedure. If the lock returns or will not clear, book us — the underlying cause needs diagnosis.

What do you check when a lock keeps engaging?

We identify which safety lock the lift is engaging, then test the component behind it — sensors, interlocks, battery supply or control electronics — and repair the cause with manufacturer-approved parts. We prove the fix with repeated full travel cycles before we call the job done.

Is there ever a reason to bypass a safety lock?

None at all. The locks check conditions that are genuinely unsafe to travel without, and bypassing one — even for a single journey — removes the lift's protection exactly when something is wrong. If a lock will not clear with a proper reset, the lift stays out of use until an engineer diagnoses it.

Our lift locks out every morning until mid-morning — why?

That pattern usually points to the low-battery lock: the lift is not recharging fully overnight, whether because of aging batteries, dirty charging contacts or imperfect parking. It is a real fault worth booking, because the batteries will eventually stop recovering enough to run at all.

How is this visit charged?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need us. Once we have diagnosed the cause we quote the full cost of the repair, which you approve before work starts, and parts are quoted separately.
