Start with the supply, not the appliance

Before assuming the fridge has died, check what it is plugged into. A tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse in the plug, a faulty socket or an extension lead that has given up can all present as a dead appliance. Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same socket to confirm it is live, and check the consumer unit for a tripped circuit.

If the socket is fine and the fridge is still silent, the fault is inside: the mains lead and its connections, an internal fuse or thermal cut-out, the electronic control board, the door switch and light circuit, or the compressor's start components. Some faults are minor and repairable; others, like a failed control board on a discontinued model, need a parts-versus-replace conversation.

What we check on the visit

The engineer confirms the supply first — socket, fuse, connections — before opening the appliance side of the diagnosis. We inspect the power lead for damage, test the internal electrical components we can safely access, and check whether the control board is receiving and distributing power. On frost-free models, the light and door switch circuit matters too, because a fridge that appears dead is occasionally just a lighting fault hiding a working compressor.

We never open sealed refrigerant components, and if the diagnosis points to the sealed system we say so and explain the referral or replacement options instead.

Keep the food safe meanwhile

A silent fridge warms up quickly. Keep the doors closed, move perishables to a working appliance, a cool box with ice packs, or a neighbour's fridge, and judge what is salvageable by the storage guidance on the packaging. If the kitchen is being renovated or the fridge lives in a garage or utility room, check whether that space has its own socket circuit, because outbuildings sometimes have separate breakers that trip independently of the house. Photograph the model plate inside the cabinet before the visit too, because a dead appliance cannot always show you its own details.

Safety limits worth respecting

Do not repeatedly reset a tripped breaker to force a faulty appliance back on — a recurring trip means something is wrong and needs diagnosing. Never open the back panel or tamper with internal electronics yourself; fridges contain capacitors and wiring that hold risk even with the plug out, and a well-meaning look inside often makes the eventual diagnosis harder. If you smell burning or see scorch marks at the plug or socket, switch off at the consumer unit and tell us when you book.

Repair or replace

Faults in the lead, plug, light circuit, door switch, or a replaceable internal fuse or sensor are usually repairable at sensible cost. Control boards and compressor start components are more model-dependent: we identify the correct part and quote it separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. On an older appliance with an expensive board or a failed compressor, we will compare the repair honestly against a replacement so you can decide with real numbers.

Booking your visit

Call or use the contact form with the brand and model number, when it went dead, and whether anything preceded it — a power cut, a tripped breaker, a burning smell, or nothing at all. Tell us if the socket has been ruled out so we arrive ready for the internal diagnosis, and mention the appliance's approximate age, because it shapes the repair-versus-replacement conversation. The booking fee secures the appointment, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us, and you approve the full quote before any work begins.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Pressing the door and getting nothing — no light, no hum, no response — is alarming, but a dead fridge is often an electrical fault rather than a dead appliance. Our engineer diagnoses the supply and control side systematically, from the socket through to the internal components, and gives you a clear quote before any repair is undertaken.

Questions people ask about fridge not turning on

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What should I check before booking?

Confirm the socket is live by plugging in another appliance, check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker, and look at the plug fuse. If those are fine, the fault is inside the fridge and needs an engineer.

My breaker keeps tripping when I plug the fridge in — why?

A repeated trip points to an electrical fault in the appliance or its supply and should not be reset repeatedly to force it on. Stop resetting it and let us diagnose the cause safely.

Could it just be the light that has failed?

Sometimes a fridge that seems dead is running normally behind a failed light or door switch. That is why we test the power and control circuits properly rather than going straight to the worst conclusion.

Can I open the back panel to look myself?

No. Internal electronics and capacitors hold risk even when unplugged, and opening the panel can make diagnosis harder. Leave it to a competent engineer.

What does a no-power diagnosis cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and you approve it before any work starts; parts or materials needed are identified and quoted separately.
