What a dead panel can and cannot mean

The control panel is the visible end of the fridge's electronics. When it misbehaves, the fault may be in the panel and its ribbon connections, in the supply reaching the board, or in the main control board itself — and occasionally the panel is fine but a lock function or display mode has been activated by accident.

A blank display on an otherwise cold fridge is a different situation from a blank display on a warm one, and we treat them differently: the first suggests a display or panel fault, the second suggests the board or power side has failed. Testing properly matters because the parts differ enormously in cost. Modern panels also fail in odd ways — a display showing wrong numbers or buttons that respond only sometimes can point at connections rather than a dead board, and those are cheaper to put right.

First checks worth doing

Some apparent panel failures are user-mode issues. Check the manual for a child lock or display-lock combination — many models hold buttons to lock the panel, and it engages easily by accident. Spray cleaners near the panel are worth mentioning when you book, since moisture in the button membrane causes intermittent faults. Confirm the fridge is actually powered: light on, compressor humming, socket proven live with another appliance. If the panel went dead after a power cut, a full unplug for ten minutes sometimes resets the electronics. If none of that restores it, the fault is likely in the panel, its connections or the board, and it needs an engineer.

What we test on the visit

The engineer confirms the power and supply side first, then examines the panel connections, tests the display and button functions, and evaluates the main control board's behaviour across the appliance — fans, lights, defrost and cooling responses all tell us whether the board itself is healthy. On some models the panel is a separate replaceable part; on others it is integrated with the board, which changes the economics of the repair.

If the fault extends into the cooling system rather than the electronics, we will say so plainly. Sealed refrigerant work is specialist work we do not carry out.

Meanwhile, keep the fridge safe

If the panel is dead but the fridge is still cold, it is keeping food safe — just avoid changing settings blindly and note anything odd the appliance does. If the panel is dead and the cabinet is warming, move perishables to a working fridge or cool box with ice packs and judge items by the storage guidance on their packaging. If the appliance is tripping the electrics or smells hot, switch it off at the socket if it is safe to do so.

Repairs and parts

Panel assemblies, display modules and control boards are all model-specific parts: we identify the correct component, quote it separately, and confirm availability with the manufacturer before ordering. Boards for discontinued models are sometimes unavailable, which can make replacement the sensible route — we will set out the honest comparison with your appliance's age in front of us rather than pushing a repair that cannot be completed.

Booking your visit

Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, when the panel failed, and whether the fridge is still cooling normally. Tell us if anything preceded the failure — a power cut, a cleaning session with spray near the panel, or a slow decline. A booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A control panel that will not respond, a display gone blank or buttons that do nothing can leave you unable to change settings at all — and unsure whether the fridge is even running properly underneath. Our engineer diagnoses whether the fault is the panel itself, its connections or the board behind it, and gives you a clear quote before any work begins.

Did the job well

Fixed without any fuss and explained what had caused it. Only reason for four stars is that I had to chase once to confirm the appointment time.

Questions people ask about control panel not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I have locked the panel by accident?

It happens often — many models use a held-button combination for child or display lock. Check your manual for the unlock combination and try it before booking; a locked panel looks exactly like a dead one.

The display is blank but the fridge is still cold — is that serious?

The cooling is what matters for food, so the fridge is safe for now, but a dead display usually means a panel, connection or board fault that will need diagnosis. Book a visit rather than waiting for the cooling to follow.

Can the control panel be replaced separately from the board?

On many models the panel is a separate part, but on others it is integrated with the main board. We identify which applies to yours and quote the correct component separately, confirming availability first.

What if the replacement board is no longer made?

Boards for discontinued models are sometimes unavailable. We confirm with the manufacturer before ordering and, if the part cannot be sourced, give you an honest comparison with a replacement appliance.

How much does it cost?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts; the panel or board is identified and quoted separately.
