Why freezers stop freezing
A freezer usually fails gradually rather than overnight, and the cause is often visible if you know where to look. Heavy frost on the back wall or around the vents can choke the airflow so the compartment cannot reach temperature even though the system is running. A door seal that no longer grips lets damp air in, which accelerates frost and makes the appliance run constantly without catching up.
Deeper causes sit in the cooling circuit: a fan that has seized, a thermostat or sensor reading wrongly, a compressor that has stopped starting, or a sealed-system fault that needs specialist attention. Each points to a different outcome, which is why a proper diagnosis comes first. Age is a factor as well: as freezers get older, seals harden and components wear, so a slow decline over months often sits behind the sudden moment you finally notice.
What we check on the visit
The engineer works through the freezer methodically: settings, how full the drawer is and whether packaging is blocking the internal vents, the condition of the door seal, and how much frost has built up and where. We then listen for the evaporator fan and the compressor, and test the temperature control and related electrics.
If frost is the story, we will discuss whether a full manual defrost is worth doing and whether a defrost component — a heater, timer or sensor on frost-free models — has failed. If the system itself is quiet or the compressor is not running, we test the electrical side and, where the evidence points to the sealed refrigerant circuit, we explain that this is specialist work outside what we do and tell you what your realistic options are.
Protecting the food first
Once a freezer drifts above freezing, food safety is the priority. Keep the door shut as much as possible, because opening it repeatedly costs cold air. Move anything valuable to a working freezer if you have one, or to a neighbour's, and judge individual items by the storage guidance on their packaging rather than by guesswork. When something high-risk has clearly thawed, it is safer to throw it away than to refreeze or re-cook it.
Repair or replace
Fan motors, thermostats, sensors and defrost components are commonly repairable, and we quote those on the spot where the part is identifiable. Parts differ by brand and model, so where a specific component is needed we identify it and price it separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer.
A failed compressor or a sealed-system leak changes the conversation, particularly on an older chest or upright freezer. We will compare the repair quote against a sensible replacement and tell you plainly if replacement is the better spend. We will never sell you a repair that does not make sense.
Aftercare once it is running again
Once the freezer is repaired, leave a small gap around the air vents when loading, keep the door seal clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent, and check the seal periodically for gaps. Avoid scraping ice with metal tools, which punctures the lining, and defrost manually only with the appliance unplugged.
Booking your visit
Call or use the contact form with the freezer's brand and model number, whether it is a chest or upright model, and what it is doing — silent, running constantly, frosting heavily, or warm inside. If you need an urgent slot because food is at risk, say so and we will confirm what is available rather than promising a time we cannot guarantee. You approve the price before any work starts, every time.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A freezer that will not hold its temperature puts a whole drawer of food at risk, so speed matters. Our visit is a proper diagnosis: we test the airflow, the seals, the defrost behaviour and the cooling components before recommending anything. You will know what failed, whether it is repairable, and exactly what the work will cost before we begin.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about freezer not freezing
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What can I safely check before calling?
Confirm the dial settings, make sure nothing is blocking the internal vents, and inspect the door seal for gaps or damage. A heavy frost build-up is also worth noting and telling us about when you book.
Is a thick frost build-up the cause or a symptom?
It can be either. Frost choking the airflow causes poor cooling directly, but heavy frost on a frost-free model usually points to a failed defrost heater, sensor or timer, which is what we will test.
Can you recharge the refrigerant if the system has leaked?
No. We do not open or recharge sealed refrigerant systems; that is specialist work. If the diagnosis points there we say so clearly and explain your repair-versus-replacement options honestly.
My freezer is very full — does that matter?
Yes. Overpacking blocks the internal air vents and stops cold air circulating, so even a healthy freezer struggles. We check loading during the visit and advise on sensible spacing.
How much will the visit and repair cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book to secure the appointment. Labour is at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, with less notice costing more. The full cost is quoted and you approve it before any work begins, and parts or materials are quoted separately if required.
