Why a fridge never stops running
A healthy fridge cycles off several times an hour. Constant running means the appliance cannot reach its target or believes it has not. Common culprits: a door seal leaking warm air, the door not closing fully because of a misaligned hinge or an overfull shelf, vents blocked by packaging, condenser coils choked with dust so heat cannot escape, or a thermostat or sensor that never registers the target temperature.
A hot kitchen, a fridge pushed hard against the wall, or the room thermostat turned up in winter can all push an otherwise healthy appliance into near-continuous running. And on frost-free models, a failed defrost component quietly builds ice until airflow suffers and the compressor never gets a break.
What we check on the visit
We start with the obvious wins: settings, clearance behind and above the appliance, how dusty the condenser coils are, the condition and grip of the door seals, and whether the doors close and hold shut on their own. We check the internal airflow and frost pattern, then test the thermostat or sensor and watch how the compressor behaves across the visit.
If everything points to the sealed refrigerant system — a compressor that runs but never cools, for example — we stop there and explain, because sealed-system work including any refrigerant recharge is specialist work outside what we do.
What it is costing you meanwhile
A fridge that never rests uses noticeably more electricity and ages its compressor faster, so it is worth diagnosing rather than tolerating. Compressors are designed to cycle, not to run continuously, and months of flat-out running shorten the remaining life of an appliance that might otherwise serve you for years. Fixing the underlying cause — a seal costing a fraction of a compressor — is almost always the cheaper path. While you wait for the visit, keep the door openings brief, make sure nothing inside blocks the vents, and give the back of the appliance a few inches of clearance. Cleaning the coils with the plug pulled out and a soft brush is safe and often helps.
Repairs we typically carry out
Seal replacement, hinge adjustment, fan motor replacement, and thermostat or sensor replacement are the common fixes and are quoted on the spot where the part is identifiable. Defrost components on frost-free models are also repairable. Model-specific parts such as control boards are identified and quoted separately, with availability depending on the manufacturer. Where the diagnosis points to the compressor or sealed system on an older appliance, we will give you an honest repair-versus-replacement comparison rather than selling you a losing battle.
Aftercare
Once running normally again, keep the coils dust-free, check the seals occasionally for gaps, avoid loading hot food straight into the cabinet, and leave room for air to move across the shelves. A fridge that can breathe rarely has to run flat out. If you notice the humming returning after a hot spell, give the coils another check before assuming a fault.
Booking your visit
Call or use our contact form with the brand and model number, how long it has been running constantly, and whether it is cooling properly, cooling badly or icing up. Mention anything recent — a move, a new kitchen layout, hotter weather — because context speeds up diagnosis. If you have already cleaned the coils or replaced a seal yourself, tell us — that history rules causes in and out. The booking fee is paid when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A fridge that runs non-stop is working too hard, wasting electricity and usually wearing itself towards a breakdown. There is always a reason: something is letting warm air in, blocking heat out, or misreading the temperature. Our visit finds which, with a straightforward quote before any repair begins.

Questions people ask about fridge constantly running
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is constant running always a fault?
Not always. Hot weather, a full shopping load or restricted clearance behind the appliance can cause temporary non-stop running. If it persists for days, it is worth diagnosing.
Can I clean the condenser coils myself?
Yes, safely — unplug the appliance first and use a soft brush or vacuum on the coils at the back or underneath. Heavy dust there is a very common cause of overworking.
How do I tell if the door seal is the problem?
Run your hand around the closed door feeling for escaping cold air, and check the seal for cracks or flattened sections. A banknote gripped by the shut door should pull out with some resistance.
What if it turns out to be the compressor?
A compressor running but never cooling points towards a sealed-system issue, which is specialist work we do not carry out. We will say so plainly and set out your repair-versus-replacement options.
How much does diagnosis and repair cost?
A booking fee is paid when you book. Labour is charged at an hourly rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, so less notice means a higher rate. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and parts or materials are quoted separately if needed.
