Driveway repair is a broad title for a simple truth: every driveway problem has a cause, and the repair that lasts is the one that addresses it. A crack filled without asking why it opened reopens. A dip topped up without finding out why it sank re-sinks. A pothole patched over soft ground re-forms. This page explains our approach to repair in general — how we diagnose, what the common repairs involve, and how pricing works — so you know what to expect when we arrive.
The common problems and their causes
Most driveway faults fall into a handful of families. Cracks and split joints usually trace to water getting in, freeze-thaw widening them, or movement in the base beneath. Dips and settlement point at soft or poorly compacted ground, or a subbase that has eroded under water paths. Potholes are the visible end of water and frost working on a weak spot until the surface breaks. Loose blocks and rocking slabs mean lost jointing sand, failed edge restraints or undermined bedding. Edges crumbling is where drives usually start failing — the boundary takes the least care and the most abuse. And standing water is the engine behind most of the above, which is why it always features in our diagnosis.
How we diagnose
We look at the whole drive, not just the fault. We check the fault's pattern and extent, probe the surrounding surface for soft or hollow ground, trace where rainwater goes and where it sits, examine edges and joints, and consider the drive's age, construction and the loads it carries. Then we give you the diagnosis in plain English: what has failed, why, and what the repair options are at each level — including the honest one where the fault is a symptom of something bigger, and patching would be money down the drain. Where the honest answer is a bigger project — an excavated rebuild, a resurfacing, a replacement — we say so and quote it after survey rather than nudging you towards a patch that will not last.
The repairs themselves
Surface repairs: cracks cleaned out and sealed with flexible materials; spalled or broken sections repaired; joints re-pointed or re-sanded. Levelling repairs: sunken slabs and blocks lifted, re-bedded on compacted material and relaid; dips corrected where the base allows. Structural repairs: failed sections excavated to sound material and rebuilt in compacted layers, with edges and drainage corrected while we are there. Drainage repairs: channels and gullies cleared or repaired, falls corrected, water paths cut off. Excavation always involves underground services: we locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below — utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the responsibilities we set out with you.
Weather and timing
Outdoor repair work needs suitable conditions: sealers and surface repairs will not cure properly in the wrong weather, and excavation in rain is self-defeating. We schedule sensibly and tell you plainly when weather must delay work rather than seal a failure into the repair.
What we guarantee and what we don't
We do not guarantee that repairs will never need revisiting — frost, water and vehicles keep working on any outdoor surface, and ground moves. What we do is repair causes as well as symptoms, use materials suited to the job, and tell you what to watch for afterwards so any recurrence is caught while it is small.
Costs and booking
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit — the diagnosis happens at that rate. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately; larger rebuilds are quoted after survey and staged as bigger projects. When you book, describe the fault — where it is, how long it has been there, whether it worsens after rain or frost — and the surface type. Photos help us bring the right materials and plan the time.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A driveway throws up all sorts of problems, and they all have different roots: water, weight, frost or time. Our visit starts with a proper diagnosis — what has failed and why — and ends with a repair quoted and approved before we start, so you spend once on the right fix rather than repeatedly on the wrong one.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about driveway repair service
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair my driveway myself?
Some of it, honestly: sealing a clean dry crack, re-sanding block paving joints, sweeping and clearing drainage. We will tell you which of those your drive needs. What DIY struggles with is diagnosis — knowing whether that crack is surface wear or the edge of a failing base — and the compaction and materials that structural repairs need. A DIY patch on a fault that needed the base rebuilt is money spent twice.
What do you check when assessing a driveway problem?
The fault itself — its pattern, extent and severity — and then everything around it: soft or hollow ground nearby, where water drains and pools, the condition of edges and joints, and the drive's age and construction. The goal is a plain-English diagnosis of what has failed and why, so the repair addresses the cause and not just the symptom you noticed.
Is a damaged driveway a safety issue?
It can be — rocking slabs trip feet, potholes catch wheels and ankles, crumbling edges shed debris, and standing water becomes ice. If you are booking because of a specific hazard, tell us, because that shapes how quickly we come and what we make safe first. We will always flag anything that needs urgent attention during the assessment.
Will the repair last?
Repairs done to the cause have every chance of lasting, but no honest contractor guarantees outdoor work against future weathering, settlement or frost — the same forces that caused the fault keep acting on the drive. What we do is fix the cause as well as the symptom, and tell you what to monitor so any recurrence is caught early, while it is still a small job.
How much does driveway repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit — the diagnosis is done at that rate. The full cost of the repair is quoted and approved before we start, with materials quoted separately. Where the honest answer is an excavated rebuild or resurfacing, that bigger project is quoted after survey so you see the real scope before committing.
