Years of grime, moss, algae and weeds change how a driveway looks and, more importantly, how it behaves: green film makes it slippery, weeds widen joints, and organic debris holds moisture against the surface. Cleaning reverses a surprising amount of that — and it is often the cheapest way to find out what condition your drive is actually in underneath. This page explains what professional cleaning involves, what it can and cannot achieve, and how to keep the result.

What a professional clean involves

The right method depends on the surface, and that is the first decision. Block paving takes pressure washing well — but jetting strips the jointing sand, so a proper block paving clean finishes with fresh kiln-dried sand brushed back into every joint; cleaning without re-sanding leaves the surface unlocked and loose. Tarmac needs care: old or brittle tarmac can be damaged by high pressure, so we use appropriate pressures and techniques rather than blasting. Concrete and slabs take pressure cleaning well, with treatments afterwards to kill spores and slow the regrowth of algae. Gravel and resin-bound surfaces have their own rules — resin surfaces in particular need gentle methods or they can be permanently marked. Oil stains, rust marks and tyre scuffs each need their own treatment, and we will be honest about which will lift and which will only fade: old oil in particular often leaves a shadow no cleaner removes entirely.

What cleaning reveals

A clean drive is a diagnostic drive. Once the moss and grime are gone, cracks, dips, spalling and sunken areas are visible — sometimes for the first time in years — and that is useful information rather than an inconvenience. We will point out anything the cleaning has exposed that deserves attention, from a crack worth sealing before winter to a dip that holds water, and you can decide what, if anything, to do next. Cleaning an obviously failing surface is still worthwhile — but it is better to know the surface's true state before deciding between cleaning, repair or replacement.

Why driveways get dirty again, and what slows it

Regrowth depends on conditions: shade, moisture and organic debris. A drive that drains and gets swept regrows slowly; one with dips that hold water, overhanging trees and leaf-fall regrows fast no matter how well it is cleaned. Chemical treatments to slow regrowth are used where appropriate, and we will be straightforward: we do not guarantee chemical treatments — results depend on weather, shade and surface — and shaded, damp drives will green up again in time. What genuinely slows regrowth is the boring stuff: sweeping, keeping drainage clear, cutting back overhanging growth, and an occasional maintenance clean.

Honest limits

Cleaning restores what is there; it does not repair what has failed. A cleaned drive with a failed base looks better and still needs fixing, and heavily worn or damaged surfaces may look patchy after cleaning because the damage is now visible. We do not guarantee that every stain will lift or that the surface will stay clean for a set period — British weather and biology decide that. What we do promise is the right method for your surface, a properly finished job — including re-sanding block paving — and an honest account of what the cleaning revealed.

Costs and booking

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with materials and treatments quoted separately. When you book, tell us the surface type and rough area, whether it has been cleaned before, and what is bothering you most — moss, weeds, oil or general grime — because that shapes the method and the time.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A dirty driveway hides more than it damages, which is why cleaning is often the best value work a drive can have. Our visit cleans with the method your surface actually needs — pressure, soft wash or hand — treats regrowth, and tells you honestly whether what lies beneath the dirt is sound or needs repair too.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about driveway cleaning

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clean my driveway myself?

Yes — sweeping, a stiff brush and a domestic pressure washer will shift a lot of grime on robust surfaces. Three cautions: keep pressure and distance sensible on tarmac, which can be damaged by blasting; expect jetting to strip block paving joints, so re-sand immediately afterwards; and avoid acid or harsh supermarket chemicals, which scar surfaces and kill surrounding planting. If you want regrowth slowed or stains treated, that is where professional products and technique earn their keep.

What does a professional driveway clean involve?

The right method for your surface — pressure, soft wash or hand work — with treatments to kill algae and slow regrowth where appropriate, oil and stain treatment where they will respond, and, on block paving, fresh kiln-dried sand brushed back into every joint afterwards, because jetting strips the joints. We also tell you what the clean revealed: cracks, dips or damage worth knowing about.

Will cleaning damage my driveway?

Not when the method matches the surface — that is the whole skill of it. The risks are real with the wrong approach: high pressure on old tarmac can scour the surface, aggressive chemicals can scar concrete and resin, and jetting block paving without re-sanding leaves it loose and open to water. We assess the surface first and use methods it can take, and we will tell you plainly if a surface is too fragile for aggressive cleaning.

Will the moss and algae just grow back?

Some will, in time — shade and British damp guarantee regrowth on any outdoor surface, and we do not guarantee a permanently sterile drive. What slows regrowth is changing the conditions: a drive that drains, gets swept and loses its overhanging shade greens far more slowly than one that holds water under trees. We treat the surface to slow regrowth, and we will point out the conditions that are feeding it.

How much does driveway cleaning cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, with materials and treatments quoted separately — area, surface type and how much regrowth there is decide the time involved. If the clean reveals repairs worth doing, those are quoted separately so you can decide.
