Power recliners and rise chairs are simpler than adjustable beds in one way and more demanding in another: they carry the full weight of a person through a single mechanism, often several times a day, and the motor has to lift that person from a seated position. That is hard work, and it is why the motor and the transformer are the parts that most often give trouble.
The Different Failures
Nothing happens at all. Supply, fuse, transformer, handset or control box. Start with the plug and the socket.
The backrest reclines but the footrest does not (or the reverse). Usually one motor channel, one connector, or one function on the handset.
The chair reclines but will not rise. On a rise chair this is a serious symptom: the lift motor has to move the whole chair plus occupant. It points at a weakened motor, a binding lift mechanism, or a control fault.
The footrest will not retract. Often a jammed linkage or a failed motor, and it matters because the person may not be able to get out of the chair.
It moves in short bursts and stops. Thermal cut-out tripping, a sign the motor is working too hard.
It moves on its own, or will not stop. Stop using it and unplug it immediately. That is a control fault, not an inconvenience.
Getting Someone Out Safely
If a rise chair has stopped partway and the person cannot get up, that is the priority, not the chair. Help them to stand if it is safe and they are able, or support them while someone brings a stable chair alongside.
Some recliners have a manual release — a lever, a cable pull or a battery pack — and it must be used only as the manufacturer's instructions describe, and only by someone confident to do it. Never force a footrest down with someone's legs under it, and never tip a chair with someone in it.
If the person is in pain or distressed, or has been stuck for some time, call 999 rather than waiting for a repair visit.
What We Check
We start at the wall: plug, fuse, socket, and whether anything else on the circuit has been affected. Then the transformer output under load, the handset, the control box and each motor in turn. On rise chairs we examine the lift mechanism for binding and the frame for distortion, because a chair that has been pushing against a bent linkage will show it in the motor's behaviour.
We look at the lead where it passes under the chair, a common place for crush damage, and at the handset cable where it drapes over the arm.
What We Repair
Transformers, control boxes, handsets and motors are replaced as complete units, matched to your chair's specification. We replace damaged leads and connectors, free and lubricate linkages where the manufacturer intends it, and replace worn pivots and rollers. Where a lift mechanism has bent, we replace the affected part or tell you honestly that the frame is beyond economic repair.
We do not rebuild sealed motors, and we do not fit a more powerful motor to "cure" a binding mechanism. If the chair is straining, something is causing it.
Choosing Repair or Replacement
Recliners are often repairable for years, and a transformer or handset replacement is a small job. The calculation changes when the frame has distorted, the mechanism is worn at several points, or the motors are obsolete. We will set out what we found, what a repair involves, and what we would weigh in your position — then leave the decision with you.
We do not certify a chair as suitable for a particular person's needs. That is a question for the user, their family and carers, and the manufacturer's stated limits.
Keeping It Working
Keep the mechanism clear of objects, avoid trapping the lead under the chair, and stop pressing the button when the motor labours. Have the chair checked if the movement becomes slower or noisier — a motor that is failing gives plenty of warning.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, whether it is a recliner or a rise chair, what works and what does not, and whether anyone is currently unable to get out of it. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A recliner that will not recline, or a rise chair that will not lift, takes away the chair someone actually lives in. That makes it more urgent than the average repair, and it makes a clear diagnosis more valuable — you need to know quickly whether this is a small part, a bigger repair, or a chair that has reached the end of its life.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about recliner not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is there a quick check I can do myself?
Check the plug and fuse, try another socket, and replace the handset batteries if it is wireless. If the chair has a battery backup pack, disconnect it and try on mains. Do not open the transformer or control box, and never reach into the mechanism — a recliner's linkage can move without warning.
What will you look at during the visit?
The supply, plug and fuse, then the transformer under load, the handset, the control box and each motor in turn. On rise chairs we also examine the lift mechanism for binding and the frame for distortion, since strain there shows up as a struggling motor.
Someone cannot get out of the chair — what do I do?
That is the priority, not the chair. Help them stand if it is safe, or support them while a stable chair is brought alongside. A manual release should only be used exactly as the manufacturer describes, by someone confident to do it, and never force a footrest down over someone's legs. If they are in pain or distressed, call 999.
The chair moves in short bursts and stops — why?
That is usually a thermal cut-out tripping because the motor is working too hard, often from a binding mechanism, a worn pivot or a motor nearing the end of its life. Releasing the cut-out and carrying on risks the motor, so it is worth finding the cause rather than waiting for it to fail completely.
What will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We diagnose first, then quote the full cost of the work for your approval before starting. Replacement parts — transformer, handset, motor — are quoted separately.
