A bed, recliner or rise chair that has gone completely dead is a different problem from one that moves badly, and it pays to treat it that way. "Not working" can mean the handset does nothing at all, the furniture moves in one direction only, or it twitches and stops. Telling us which of those you are seeing when you book helps us arrive prepared.

Start With What You Can See

Before anything is moved, we ask you to take the weight off the furniture and, where you can safely reach the plug, switch it off at the wall. Electric adjustable furniture runs on mains power stepped down by a transformer or control box, and the first checks are always the dull ones: is the plug firmly in its socket, is the socket itself live, has the fused plug blown, has the supply been tripped at the consumer unit. A surprising number of call-outs end here, especially where the furniture shares a socket with a heater or a vacuum cleaner that has overloaded the circuit.

If your furniture has a battery backup pack — common on adjustable beds for use during a power cut — check whether it has been left connected and has gone flat. Some control boxes will not run on mains while a depleted backup pack is attached, which looks exactly like a total failure.

The Likely Causes, In Order

When power is reaching the furniture, the fault usually sits in one of five places:

  • The handset or remote. Wired handsets suffer from damaged cables where they pass over a frame edge; wireless ones from flat batteries or lost pairing.
  • The control box. This is the brain of the system, containing the receiver, the relays that switch the motors and often the thermal protection. Moisture, a power surge or simple component failure will silence everything.
  • A safety cut-out. Most systems include a thermal cut-out that trips if the motors have been run repeatedly. It usually resets after a rest, but a tired one can latch permanently.
  • The motor or actuator connections. Plugs work loose under a bed that is constantly moving, and a single disconnected actuator can stop the control box from running any function.
  • The motor itself. A seized or burnt-out actuator will stall the system, and some control boxes shut down entirely when they detect one.

How We Diagnose It

We test in sequence rather than guessing. Supply and fuse first, then the handset, then the control box outputs, then each motor in turn. That order matters because it stops us selling you a motor when the real fault is a two-pound fuse, and it means we can tell you with confidence what has failed rather than what might have.

Where a handset is suspect, we can often confirm it by substitution if a compatible spare is to hand; where a control box is suspect, the same applies. We do not dismantle sealed motor units or control boxes to repair internal components. Those are replaced as complete units, using parts that match your manufacturer's specification, and quoted separately once we know what is needed.

Safety Before and During the Visit

Please do not keep pressing buttons to see if it will come back to life, and do not use the furniture if it has tripped the electrics, smells hot or has shown any sign of scorching. If someone is currently stuck in a reclined or raised position, get them out safely first — with help if needed — and only use a manual release if the manufacturer's instructions describe one and a confident person can operate it. Never put hands or tools into a moving mechanism, and never lie under a raised bed section to look at wiring.

If a person is in pain or distress and cannot be moved, call 999 rather than waiting for us.

What Happens Next

Once we know the cause, we set out the options in plain terms: repair, replacement of a single component, or — where a frame or mechanism has failed structurally — a conversation about whether repair is sensible. You approve the cost before we start, and parts are quoted separately so you can see what you are paying for. If the fault turns out to be inside a sealed motor unit that is no longer available, we will say so and discuss compatible alternatives rather than improvising.

Living With It Until We Arrive

Keep the furniture unplugged if it has behaved erratically, and keep the area around it clear so nobody trips over a trailing lead. If the furniture is a bed someone sleeps in, a temporary mattress on the floor is safer than a bed stuck at an awkward height. Make a note of anything you noticed beforehand — a noise, a smell, a particular button that stopped first — because those details shorten the diagnosis considerably.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Furniture that will not move at all is frustrating, and it can leave someone stuck in an uncomfortable position or unable to use a room properly. The good news is that a large share of complete failures come down to something simple: a tripped supply, a flat backup battery, an unplugged connector or a handset that has lost its pairing. We work through the system in a sensible order, keep you informed at each step, and are clear about what we can fix and what needs the manufacturer's engineer.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about electric adjustable furniture not working

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is there anything I can safely check myself before booking?

Yes. Confirm the plug is firmly in a live socket, check the fuse in the plug, look at your consumer unit for a tripped circuit, and replace the batteries in a wireless handset. If your furniture has a battery backup pack, disconnect it and see whether it runs on mains alone. Beyond that, leave it alone — do not open the control box or motor units.

What do you actually test during the visit?

We work through the supply, the plug and fuse, the handset, the control box outputs and then each motor in turn, so we can identify the failed component rather than guess at it. We also check the wiring for damage where it passes over frame edges and confirm whether a thermal cut-out has latched.

Someone is stuck in the chair — what should I do?

Make sure they are safe, comfortable and not in distress; if they are in pain or distress, call 999. A manual release or emergency lowering should only be used strictly as the manufacturer's instructions describe, and only by someone confident to do it. Never climb under, push or force the furniture, and never put hands into the mechanism.

Can you repair the motor or control box itself?

Sealed motors, actuators and control boards are replaced as complete units rather than repaired internally — that is the safe and reliable approach, and it is what the manufacturers intend. We fit parts to your manufacturer's specification, quoted separately, and we will tell you honestly if a part is no longer available.

What will it cost to get it working again?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. Once we have diagnosed the fault we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start. Any parts are quoted separately, so you see the whole picture before committing.
