Noisy Adjustable Bed or Recliner? We'll Quiet It Down at the Source in Sutton Coldfield
We trace the squeak, grind or knock to its actual source — a dry pivot, a loose fixing, a worn roller or a straining motor — and deal with the cause rather than the sound.
Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

Noise is the earliest warning most furniture gives. It arrives before failure, it changes with load, and it often points quite precisely at the part responsible. Taking it seriously is cheaper than waiting.
Reading the Sound
- Squeak or squeal, rhythmic with movement. A dry pivot, a worn bush or two surfaces rubbing that should be separated by a lubricant film.
- Grinding. Grit or hair in a roller track, a worn roller flat-spotted and dragging, or a gearbox inside an actuator beginning to fail.
- A single loud crack or knock at one point in the travel. Something catching — a linkage contacting the frame, a fixing that has loosened, or a section dropping onto a stop.
- Continuous hum with no movement. The motor is stalled or the brake is not releasing. Not a noise problem; switch it off.
- Rattle when nobody is on it. Loose fixings, a handset cable tapping the frame, or a base that is not sitting flat.
- Groan under load only. The mechanism is struggling with weight it should manage, which points at friction, alignment or a tired motor.
Note when it happens: all the time, only at one end of the travel, only with someone on it, only in one direction. That detail does most of the diagnostic work.
The Common Causes
Pivots and linkages on adjustable furniture run dry over time, and a dry steel pin in a nylon bush will squeal reliably. Rollers wear and flat-spot, then rumble. Fixings work loose under the constant small movements of a bed that is adjusted nightly. Cable ties and leads can end up touching a moving part. And an actuator whose internal gears are wearing will grind before it fails.
Some noise is a design feature — a soft thump as a section reaches its stop is normal on many beds. The useful question is whether the sound has changed.
What We Do
We run the furniture through its travel and listen before touching anything, because the location and timing of the noise identify the source. Then we isolate the power and inspect the specific area: pivots and pins for dryness and wear, rollers and tracks for debris, fixings for tightness, cable routing for contact, and the frame for anything that has shifted.
Where the cause is friction, we clean and lubricate with the product the manufacturer specifies — not a general-purpose spray, which attracts dust and can attack nylon and rubber. Where a roller or bush is worn, it is replaced; these are inexpensive and renewing them protects the actuator. Where fixings have loosened, we re-fix them properly, into sound material rather than a worn hole.
Where the noise is inside a sealed actuator, the unit is replaced. A gearbox that is grinding is on its way out, and no amount of lubrication will reach it.
The Lubricant Question
This is worth being firm about. Silicone sprays, light oils and general-purpose penetrating fluids are often the wrong choice for furniture mechanisms: they can soften nylon, swell rubber and collect grit, producing a worse noise a few weeks later. Manufacturers specify particular lubricants for particular points, and using them is the difference between a fix and a delay.
Safety
Never lubricate or inspect a mechanism while it is powered or moving, and never reach under a raised section. If the noise is accompanied by a burning smell, a hot motor, tripping electrics or erratic movement, stop using the furniture and unplug it — those are electrical symptoms, not a squeak.
If the furniture has become hard to move and someone is on it, help them off rather than driving the mechanism to see if the noise clears.
When It Is Not Worth Repairing
If the noise comes from a distorted frame, a base that has gone out of square, or a mechanism worn at several points at once, repair stops making economic sense. We will say so, explain what we found, and let you decide — rather than charging for a series of small fixes that never quite solve it.
Aftercare
Once it is quiet, keep the tracks and rollers free of hair and grit, check fixings occasionally, and route the handset cable so it cannot tap against the frame. Use the furniture through its full range regularly so lubricant is distributed and nothing seizes through disuse.
Booking
Describe the sound, when it happens and roughly where it comes from. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour is hourly at a rate depending on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Some noise is normal: a motor hum, a soft click at the end of travel. Grinding, squealing, knocking or a groan that was not there last year is not normal, and it usually means something is wearing or working harder than it should. Quietening the symptom without finding the cause tends to be temporary, and sometimes it hides a fault that gets expensive.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about noisy operation
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just spray the mechanism with oil?
Better not. General-purpose oils and silicone sprays can soften nylon, swell rubber and collect grit, which often makes the noise worse within weeks. Manufacturers specify particular lubricants for particular points, and using the right one is what makes the difference between a proper fix and a short delay.
What will you check on the visit?
We run the furniture through its travel and listen first, because where and when the noise occurs identifies the source. Then, with the power off, we inspect pivots, pins, rollers, tracks, fixings, cable routing and frame alignment, and deal with the specific cause we find.
Is a noisy mechanism dangerous?
Noise alone is rarely dangerous, but it is an early warning. A grind from an actuator means it is wearing, a squeal means a pivot is dry, and a knock at one point means something is catching. If the noise comes with a burning smell, a hot motor or tripping electrics, stop using it and unplug it — those are electrical symptoms.
Will you tell me if it is not worth repairing?
Yes. If the noise comes from a distorted frame or a mechanism worn at several points, repair stops being good value, and we will say so plainly, explain what we found, and leave the decision with you rather than charging for a series of fixes that never quite solve it.
How much does the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. After diagnosis we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before we start. Any rollers, bushes or actuator are quoted separately.
