What warping actually is

A warped door is a door that is no longer flat. Timber moves with moisture: a door that has been damp on one side and dry on the other bows or twists, and a hollow-core internal door can warp badly because there is little inside to hold it straight. Heat plays a part too — a door in full afternoon sun, or hung over a radiator, can cup within a season. Warping is a material problem, so this job is as much about honesty over what can be achieved as about skill with a plane.

How bad is it, honestly

We measure the distortion rather than eyeball it. A slight bow that shows as an uneven gap at the middle of the latch edge is common and usually manageable. A twist that leaves a diagonal gap, or a door that will not touch its stops at more than one corner, is more serious. We also look for the cause: a door edge that was never sealed, a bathroom with no extraction, a leaking gutter soaking an external frame, or a radiator position that keeps one face hot. If the cause stays, the warp tends to return whatever we do to the door, so we name the cause before we name the price.

What can be done

Where the warp is mild, the answer is often adjustment rather than timber surgery: repositioning or re-seating hinges, adjusting or adding stops, and easing the areas that bind so the door closes without fighting its own shape. Where a binding edge is the main complaint, we plane the minimum needed and seal the fresh timber immediately, because an unsealed planed edge starts the cycle again. On some doors, packing behind a hinge can pull a slight bow back into line. What we will not do is pretend a badly twisted door can be planed flat — planing an edge does not straighten a twisted panel, and over-planing leaves a door too small for its frame, rattling in the draught it now lets past.

When replacement is the honest answer

A hollow-core internal door with a pronounced bow is usually beyond sensible repair; a new door costs less than hours of unwinnable timber-wrangling, and we will say so. Solid doors with moderate warp are worth attempting, with the caveat that the result depends on the moisture in the door at the time — a door repaired in a damp winter may sit differently in a dry summer. We set those expectations before starting, not after the invoice. If a replacement is the right answer, it is quoted separately and nothing is ordered until you approve it.

Preventing a repeat

Whatever the repair, the edges of a timber door should be sealed — top, bottom and both sides, not just the faces. Paint on the faces alone lets moisture in through the edges, and the warping cycle starts again within a season or two. Ventilate steamy rooms, fix dripping gutters above external doors, and never stand a new door on edge next to a radiator while it waits to be hung. Small habits, but they decide whether the repair lasts.

Booking

If your door has developed a shape of its own, get in touch — we cover the West Midlands and same-day slots may be available depending on when you call. A booking fee is paid when you reserve; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and agreed with you before any work starts. Decoration of any worked edge is not included unless agreed at booking.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about warped door fixing

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can a warped door be fixed, or is replacement inevitable?

Mild bows and twists are often manageable with adjustment, hinge work and minimal easing of binding edges. A pronounced bow in a hollow-core door, or a twist that leaves a diagonal gap, is usually beyond sensible repair and a new door is the honest answer. We measure first and tell you which category yours is in.

What do you check on a warped door?

We measure the distortion rather than eyeball it, find where the door touches and where it gaps, and look for the cause — an unsealed edge, a steamy bathroom, a leaky gutter, sun or a radiator. The cause matters because if it continues, the warp comes back whatever we do. We then agree the approach with you before starting.

Will a repaired warp stay repaired?

Honestly, not always. Timber moves with moisture and seasons, so a door repaired in damp weather can sit differently in a dry spell, and we set that expectation before starting rather than after. Sealing all the door's edges and dealing with the cause, such as ventilation or a dripping gutter, gives the repair its best chance.

Should I paint or fill the door before you come?

Please don't — the repair work comes first, and any filling, easing or adjusting will disturb the finish on the worked edges, so painting beforehand is work done twice. Have any touch-up paint ready if the finish matters to you, though decorating is not included unless agreed. We seal raw timber as part of the repair so moisture cannot get back in.

How is warped door repair priced?

A booking fee is paid when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. If a replacement door turns out to be the right answer, that is quoted separately and you decide before anything is ordered.
