Which part has actually broken

A door handle assembly is simpler than it looks, which is good news for repairs. Two handles sit either side of the door, joined by a square spindle that slots into the latch inside the door's edge; turning either handle pulls the latch back. When a handle fails, it's almost always one of three things: the handle's return spring has died so it droops and doesn't snap back; the spindle has worn round or sheared so the handles spin without moving the latch; or the latch itself has seized or broken so the handles turn fine but nothing happens. Telling these apart takes a few minutes and saves buying the wrong part.

How we assess it

We take the handle off its fixings and look inside: the spindle's condition, the springs, the latch's action when turned directly with a screwdriver at the door's edge. We also measure what any replacement must match — the backset from the door's edge to the centre of the spindle hole, the spindle's size, the fixings' centres, and for uPVC doors the handle's PZ measurement and screw positions, which vary more than people expect. On a uPVC door the handle operates the door's multi-point locking system, so a "handle" problem there may actually be a gearbox problem, and we'll identify that honestly rather than sell you a handle that won't fix it.

Repair or replace

A drooping handle on an otherwise sound latch usually just needs a replacement handle with working springs — a quick, clean swap. A worn spindle is likewise a small, inexpensive part. A seized or broken latch means opening the door's edge and replacing the latch unit, still a modest job on most internal doors. We'll always check whether the existing latch is worth keeping — a good latch with a failed handle shouldn't be replaced wholesale, and a good handle shouldn't be binned because the latch behind it failed. If you've already bought a replacement, we'll check it matches before fitting, because handle measurements are where most DIY purchases go wrong.

What to have ready

If you'd like us to supply the replacement, we'll identify a suitable one and quote for it separately — matching finish to your other door furniture where that matters to you. If you're supplying your own, the useful details are the door type (internal timber, external, or uPVC), the handle's measurements as above, and whether the current handles are secured by visible screws or concealed fixings under a rose. Clear the area around the door so it can open fully, since latch work happens at the door's edge. And if other doors in the house have the same handles, mention it — a batch that's wearing out is worth replacing together for both function and appearance.

Limits and aftercare

Two boundaries worth knowing. First, on uPVC and composite doors, a failed multi-point mechanism behind the handle is a bigger job than handle replacement and may need specific parts; we'll tell you if that's what we find. Second, if the latch side of a locked door has failed and the door won't open at all, the job changes shape — tell us when booking, because gaining access through a failed mechanism is a different assessment. Afterward, keep an eye on the handle's return action; a handle that starts drooping again early usually means the latch is tight or the door has dropped, both easier to correct soon than late.

Booking

Tell us the door type and what the handle is doing — drooping, spinning, jammed, or off in your hand. You pay a booking fee on booking; labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit; and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. Any handle, spindle or latch is identified and quoted separately from the labour. It's a short job in most cases, and same-day may be available if it's a door you need working today.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A handle that droops, spins uselessly or has come off in your hand makes even a good door feel broken. The cause is usually one of three parts — the handle itself, the spindle that connects the two sides, or the latch they drive — and each needs a different fix. We work out which has failed and fit what the door actually needs.

Questions people ask about broken door handle

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is replacing a door handle a DIY job?

Often yes — a like-for-like handle swap with visible screws is one of the easier door jobs. Where it goes wrong is measurement: handles vary in spindle size, fixing centres and, on uPVC doors, the PZ dimension, and a handle that's a few millimetres out simply doesn't work. If the latch behind the handle is also suspect, that's the point to get it assessed properly.

What do you check to find out why the handle failed?

We remove the handle and inspect the spindle for wear, the springs for function, and the latch's action when turned directly at the door's edge. We also measure backset, spindle size and fixing centres so any replacement fits exactly. On uPVC doors we check whether the handle or the multi-point mechanism behind it is the real culprit before quoting.

Our uPVC door handle has gone floppy — is it just the handle?

Not necessarily. On a uPVC door the handle drives the multi-point locking system, so a floppy or spinning handle can mean worn handle springs or a failing gearbox inside the door. We assess which it is before recommending anything, because replacing the handle won't cure a gearbox fault — and if that's the problem, we'll explain the realistic options honestly.

Can you match the new handle to our other door furniture?

We can identify handles in matching finishes and patterns, and we'll quote for a suitable one separately from the labour so you can see the cost before deciding. If you'd rather supply your own, that's fine — we'll check it fits the door's measurements before fitting. Note that sourcing a discontinued pattern isn't always possible; we'll say so if the match can't be exact.

How does pricing work for this job?

You pay a booking fee on booking and labour is charged hourly, with the rate depending on how soon you need the visit. After we've diagnosed the fault we quote the full cost of the work and you approve it before starting. The handle, spindle or latch, if needed, is identified and quoted separately from the labour.
